sp332··on Nvidia announces financial results for first quarter fiscal 2025
If AMD had fixed their software, nvidia would have faced real competition with they launched the MI300X.
sp332··on Fentanyl is fueling a record number of youth drug deaths
The more we have to pay for each other's healthcare (insurance costs going up, ACA subsidies, maybe a future "single payer" situation), the more other people's health decisions are going to be our business.
sp332··on Wikimedia Enterprise – APIs for LLMs, AI Training, and More
Including a list of every Wikipedia author is possible but very inconvenient. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Reusing_Wikipedia_...
sp332··on Phi-3-Medium
Medium has already been available for a couple of weeks. Vision is the new one.
sp332··on Elon Finishes Migration to X domain
For a couple of days, I had trouble loading pages sometimes in Firefox, usually on mobile. I think there were a lot of cross-domain resources problems, but it seems OK today.
sp332··on Konrad Zuse's Homepage
CADT?
sp332··on Ask HN: Is there a best date/time to submit projects to HN?
https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=false&qu...

A bit before noon most days, just after midnight on Mondays.

sp332··on AI Books4 Dataset for training LLMs further
Buying a copy of the book would not give you any copyright license. You could only make copies for personal use.
sp332··on AI Books4 Dataset for training LLMs further
It's different for websites because they are intentionally served up for free. Google had a very hard time getting a license to even index book contents. And there's an ongoing tension with paywalled websites. They do pay for some news sites, in the Google News Showcase.
sp332··on Beekeeper furious over destruction of $2M honey crop
Yes, and coverage or discounts could be predicated on risk-reducing precautions.
sp332··on LoRA Learns Less and Forgets Less
Do you mean leaving most of the model in its initial, randomised state and only training a LoRA?
sp332··on Twitter is officially X.com now
And the transition is not complete, because they still load a lot of resources from the old domain, and this breaks if you have Firefox's advanced tracking protection enabled.
sp332··on Ask HN: is HN so random?
Not enough people browse /newest, so a lot of stories go by without finding their audience.
sp332··on Someone connected Windows XP to the internet, and it didn't survive long
https://krebsonsecurity.com/2019/05/microsoft-patches-wormab...

Looks like I misread and this requires RDP to be enabled, which is not the default. But it was pretty common, Rob Graham counted almost one million hosts. https://blog.erratasec.com/2019/05/almost-one-million-vulner...

sp332··on Someone connected Windows XP to the internet, and it didn't survive long
In 2019, Microsoft released a patch for WinXP because there was a remote code execution vulnerability, and there were enough WinXP machines still around to make this a big deal. A machine without this one patch would still be immediately vulnerable.
sp332··on Slack AI Training with Customer Data
LLMs are state-of-the-art at detecting sarcasm. It won't help if the data is just wrong though.

Edit: https://arxiv.org/abs/2312.03706 Human performance on this benchmark (detecting sarcasm in Reddit comments) was 0.82, a BERT-based LLM scored 0.79.

https://arxiv.org/abd/2106.05752 LSTM, 98% at detecting sarcasm in a Project Gutenburg-based dataset.

sp332··on Nevada parents wrongfully accused of child abuse file lawsuit against hospital
That's not what the lawsuit is about. It says that state agents were pretending to be caregivers in the hospital. They illegally searched the kids and accessed medical records. Also they kept the kids from their parents illegally.
sp332··on The “3.5% rule”: How a small minority can change the world
I think this leaves out cases where there is actual resistance by a larger group. For example, a March 2003 Gallup poll showed that 5% of the US population had made a public opposition to the Iraq war, but 21% had made a public display to support the war. Small minorities can't go directly against more popular movements.
sp332··on Tim Cook is running out of ideas
He's been a billionaire since 2020. How can you run a business like Apple when your personal finances take so much attention?
sp332··on Department of Justice says Boeing may be criminally liable in 737 MAX crashes
So, two Flight Technical Pilots and that's it?
sp332··on Department of Justice says Boeing may be criminally liable in 737 MAX crashes
If the stockholders didn't make the decision to defraud the FAA, then why would they be on the hook for this?
sp332··on Sit in shade while travelling on bus
Does VEYIL stand for something?
sp332··on Sit in shade while travelling on bus
The hamburger menu doesn’t work, so I have no way to figure out what this site is about.
sp332··on Gemini Flash
No, but you can just cache the state after processing the prompt. https://github.com/ggerganov/llama.cpp/tree/master/examples/...
sp332··on Firefox search update
If they just turn into another Google then what was the point?
sp332··on Disney's robots use rockets to stick the landing
Why does this page push so many entries into my back button?

Edit: If I scroll to the bottom very quickly, it only adds one extra. It seems to add them when I stop scrolling, but not every time. And never when I scroll up. This is on Firefox for Android.

sp332··on Dymaxion Car
Fuller hired a wordsmith, who hung around for a few days listening to the way he spoke and then invented the word Dymaxion for him.
sp332··on Telegram has launched a pretty intense campaign to malign Signal as insecure
We don’t have to trust the board. We have the binaries.
sp332··on Small reactors don't add up as a viable energy source
Proponents assert that SMRs would cost less to build and thus be more affordable. However, when evaluated on the basis of cost per unit of power capacity, SMRs will actually be more expensive than large reactors.

That's not what affordable means. People are building smaller reactors because it's more likely that a project will be completed, not because of unit costs.
