souvlakee··on Regime.sh – A minimalist approach to daily scheduling
I built Regime.sh after growing frustrated with the bloat of modern calendar apps. It has no notifications, integrations, or fluff — just a minimal markdown-based schedule viewer that helps you focus on what matters.

The core features are intentionally limited: offline-only operation, shareable schedule URLs, and a real-time progress view. There's no login wall or cloud sync, and the interface is deliberately sparse to minimize distractions.

I keep it on a secondary monitor while working. It creates a nice ambient display of your day's timeline without the cognitive overhead of blazingly featured calendar suites.

Also, my take on the new cinematic mode is that they should invest in a better camera if they can afford such fireworks.

The more I watch, the sadder I get. It seems they've gone in the wrong direction. They have nothing to offer regular phone users, so they're targeting "creative professionals" with fancy features.

souvlakee··on Telegram Founder Was in Russia When App's Ban Lifted
TLDR: Pavel Durov, Telegram founder, visited Russia 50+ times since 2014 "emigration". Data from leaked FSB border-crossing database reveals frequent trips, including right after Telegram's unblocking in 2020. Raises questions about his relationship with Russian authorities despite public opposition.

He's an interesting but odd man. It's rare to see him fully dressed on his Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/durov. I expected him to remove his clothes during Carlson's interview, but he didn't.

I am not currently in the US, but I plan to relocate soon. The "Wild Boar Book" is a great way to start. I’m reading it right now. I have also planned other books and courses from educative.io to aid my preparation journey. I work as a regular DevOps within IaC, cloud, some Bash/Python scripting, and so forth.
souvlakee··on Ask HN: Is Firefox better than Chrome when it comes to user security?
Last month, there was a significant buzz among those involved with Google Search (which includes almost the entire modern internet and all its developers). "Erfan Azimi," the owner of an SEO firm, suddenly began sharing leaked documents revealing how Google's ranking system works. It's more complicated than just the search itself; it involves various APIs around it. Nonetheless, these APIs reveal a lot. The leak happened when a Google developer wrote a program to convert API calls into his preferred programming language but accidentally published everything (if you're interested, I've included a link to the commit with all these descriptions [1]).

Multiple confirmations from reputable sources, including former and current Googlers, have verified the authenticity of this leak. It's not a hoax or a joke but a genuine breach of information that has piqued the interest of all SEO researchers. Here's a reliable summary of the findings:

– Google has allowlists of manually optimized sites, at least for certain topics, such as the 2020 elections or COVID-19.

– Domain names and subdomains are significant factors (despite Google's previous claims).

– There's a sandbox for new sites, which Google has always denied.

– Google directly uses data from EWOK (a system where paid users rate the quality of search results).

– User behavior on sites is actively used for ranking.

– Click data is collected not only from Google Analytics but also directly from the Chrome browser.

– Sites are categorized based on click volume, affecting their quality ranking and PageRank contribution.

– Google considers the overall brand size, including mentions across the internet, not just links.

– Content and links are secondary to clicks and site navigation behavior.

– SEO is almost irrelevant for most small companies and sites without a brand, user base, and reputation.

This is a monumental event in the world of Google Search, marking the most significant leak in the past 10-15 years. It suggests a potential discrepancy between Google's public statements and its actual search practices [3]. The strategy has shifted towards clickbait and bot farms, challenging the long-standing belief that 'content is king.' Unsurprisingly, Google has chosen to remain silent [4]. I recommend reading this article on iPullRank [5] for a more comprehensive understanding.

If you want to stop giving all your data to Google, consider using a non-chrome browser like Firefox.

Durov: As a leader of a politically neutral platform, it is my responsibility to speak to journalists representing different political views. In February, I did a 3-hour interview with a journalist of liberal views. On the same day, I spoke to Tucker Carlson, who is famously conservative. This way I can remain fair to all audiences and tell the story of Telegram to everyone.

The interview with Tucker is coming out very soon. It will be in video format, which is quite rare for me — so be sure to check it out. I heard that Tucker is also launching an official Telegram channel, so let’s stay tuned for an announcement there.

souvlakee··on Ask HN: How to pass OpenAI token securely to website?
Also, my project is open-source. However, not everybody wishes to check how the app's backend works. Plus, there are things like CI/CD, which is a hidden part, so I can potentially modify code and steal tokens on that side, meaning that open-sourcing is not the solution.
