southphillyman··on I interviewed at six top companies in Silicon Valley in six days
The time commitment is not as bad as people make it seem. You don't have two hours to yourself every night? How about 1 hour during the week and doing 2-3 on weekends? You just have to sacrifice other leisures like tv and video games to make it work.
southphillyman··on Poker player bets $100k he can last 30 days in pitch black solitary confinement
After reading about solitary confinement I wanted to test myself by staying in the bathroom in my finished basement for a weekend. I'd have sunlight through a small window, a toilet, sink, and would have my wife bring me meals 2-3 times a day. I figured this was pretty similar to real solitary confinement with the main differences being I'd be sleeping on the floor and could leave at any time. Unfortunately she refused to participate so I never did it, but I'd like to think I could have easily competed it.
southphillyman··on Is Marijuana as Safe as We Think?
Same.

I remember reading somewhere that it can trigger latent mental illness in some individuals.

southphillyman··on Facebook removed post by ex-manager who said site 'failed' black people
I've never worked with another black engineer and have only worked closely with another black person on a team (PM) over 10 yrs. That being said I wouldn't say the industry sucks, especially compared to other industries. The majority of people I work with are intelligent so that's step 1 in regards to people being able to reason beyond basic stereotypes and attitudes. I appreciate being a representative of sorts even if it's unfair. I have worked with some conservative types who have moved to tech centers from less diverse areas and take the opportunity to explain certain things to them logically and for the most part they understand. Professionally I usually get glowing feedback and reviews and at times I have suspected it's because expectations were lower (imposter syndrome). All I can do is try to represent myself the best that I can

This is interesting since I know of an initiative at FB that aggressively pursued talented AA engineers. The compensation packages they were willing to offer as part of the initiative were impressive even for FAANG. Why put that effort forth if the environment at the company is not adequate to retain whatever AA talent you get?
southphillyman··on Helsinki to Begin Anonymous Recruiting
Yea, the bit about a mixed master race was kind of a give away there.
southphillyman··on StockX Is a Stock Market for Nikes and Rolexes
The whole value add of this company vs Ebay is that they are supposed to have "experts" verifying the authenticity of the shoes. I recently read an account where they pretty much hired someone off the street and had him verifying a shoe per minute on his first day. I ordered a pair of Yeezys from them 2 weeks ago and was some what concerned with the fact they verified and shipped my pair out the same day they received it from the seller...
southphillyman··on Facebook reportedly discredited critics by linking them to George Soros
>Can you point to anything from the left even approaching that kind of level of insanity?

Unfortunately their go to right now, and probably for the next x number of years, is the guy who shot up the Republican baseball game. No doubt there are extremists on both sides, one side just seems to have way more

southphillyman··on Amazon Plans to Split HQ2 Evenly Between Two Cities
Are you referring to the GI Bills that allowed flight to new suburban developments or something else?
southphillyman··on At Netflix, Radical Transparency and Blunt Firings Unsettle the Ranks
Not to rationalize the environment there but I feel like Netflix is pretty transparent about being a difficult place to work and compensates for the potential stress with above average pay. I feel like most people who can get hired there are well aware of the work environment they will be entering.
southphillyman··on Japan's Hometown Tax
Perhaps this explains why Italian Americans don't really look like the Italians I see on Italian television shows? Seems most of them migrated from southern Italy/Sicily.
southphillyman··on Ask HN: Over 60 = no engineering jobs?
Interesting, I'm in my mid 30s and removed the dates of graduation when I was looking 3-4 yrs ago. The person I had reviewing my resume said removing the dates was a dead give away and they may assume I'm even older than I am so I put it back. Age hasn't been an issue for me yet but I have had people say things like "You don't look like you have a kid that old" and other strange things when we talk about personal things and they find a little about me. Now that I'm even older I may just remove education completely and try to get extra sleep leading up to any interviews to minimize my eye elasticity.
southphillyman··on Uber Proposals Value It at $120B in Possible 2019 IPO
This was my impression when I went to Santa Monica/Venice last December and I had to step over an unused Bird scooter every 3rd step. But recently I was in Atlanta and they are hugely popular there. Everyone from little kids to office workers with helmets on were using them. I wish they were in my city, seems like an awesome way to travel <10 blocks. I'll be going to LA and Atlanta both fairly soon and will def give the scooters a try.
southphillyman··on Jason Fung explains why intermittent fasting diets work
I have been doing IF for a month or two now. Hard to really quantify it's effects since I've been eating much better and going to the gym during that same time period. Either way I think it's useful if only as a way to make eating at a calorie deficit easier. My biggest gripe is that it's basically impossible to have a social nightlife on the weekends if you can't eat or drink after 8pm
southphillyman··on New York inmate's golf drawings lead to exoneration in murder
I questioned the high conviction rates, but I think that is a sensitive topic for him as he often says U.S news of what's going on in China is misleading.
southphillyman··on New York inmate's golf drawings lead to exoneration in murder
re: American Justice System. I recently had to explain to a Chinese coworker of mine how in the U.S you can be held in jail for years pending trial because you can't afford to post bail. He was legit blown away and had no idea how that was possible. Apparently in China they have a couple of days to present evidence from the numerous CCTV cameras in the country or they must release you. Mechanisms like cash bail and these numerous wrongful conviction stories really highlight how the "land of the free" is anything but.
southphillyman··on Rice University Says Middle-Class And Low-Income Students Won't Have To Pay
That's what scholarships are for, no?
southphillyman··on 'Coerced into tipping'? How apps are changing the culture of tipping in SF
I noticed this yesterday at dinner. The lowest suggested tip on the receipt was 20%! So psychologically I kind of felt bad for "only" giving 15%.
southphillyman··on Napoleon Was the Best General Ever
Jordan was a below avg 3 pt shooter. He may have gotten to the line frequently today but he'd also be relying on the his classic mid range shot which is the most inefficient in today's NBA.
southphillyman··on Napoleon Was the Best General Ever
He didn't have a 2011 finals perhaps because at the same age that Lebron was in 2011 (26) Jordan was getting his behind handed to him by the pistons and not even making the finals. That's the fallacy with the "6-0" argument
southphillyman··on Would You Let the I.R.S. Prepare Your Taxes? (2015)
This happened to me as well, they processed every transaction as pure profit. I don't see how this disproves that they had the data though. They literally had every transaction I made that year as reported by the brokerage, they just didn't use the data right largely because I'm still required to spoon it to them correctly.
southphillyman··on Ask HN: What is the most unethical thing you've done as a programmer?
Give positive references for developers who I know are crap because they are nice guys and I feel sorry for them.
southphillyman··on Apple becomes the first $1T company
In the early 2000s I spent $1800 on a set of 18in chrome rims for an early 90s Accord, the wheels were almost half the value of the car. I use to do the calculations for if I had spent that money on AAPL instead of something so incredibly wasteful. It's easy to beat yourself up looking back in retrospect at dumb decisions.
southphillyman··on Ask HN: Why did you quit your last job?
More money, better title, double the vacation, cheaper health care, and better retirement contributions were available elsewhere.
southphillyman··on Ask HN: Got a CS degree, but I’m unable to be programmer. What can I do?
>One of my purposes in interviews was literally to get the candidate to say they didn't know.

This. It's ok to admit you don't know everything in an interview. Some of my most glowing feedback from interviews came from interviews where I answered questions with a flat out "I don't know"

southphillyman··on Ask HN: What should I do to prepare for a meeting about my annual raise?
The problem with asking for a raise is it usually needs to be approved by a separate HR/payroll department. I can't even really think of a time where someone that I know got a sizable raise without either taking on more responsibility (ie: promotion) or using an offer as leverage. The sad reality is most companies would rather waste thousands of dollars recruiting, hiring, and training new employees instead of giving that money to the employee they are replacing.
southphillyman··on Think everyone died young in ancient societies? Think again
Interestingly, I grew up thinking the exact opposite. In the Torah Methuselah is mentioned as having lived 900+ years.
southphillyman··on Why Japanese Whisky Is So Good and So Hard to Find
Not sure about Vodkas, wines, or champagnes as I can't really tell the difference. But I could instantly tell the difference in smoothness between the $60 scotch I have at home now and the $150+ bottle I recently sampled at a friends house.
southphillyman··on Why Japanese Whisky Is So Good and So Hard to Find
Wabi in Venice Beach had a good selection when I was there. My biggest gripe with all (non American) whiskey is price. Kind of hard to experiment when you are looking at $20+ a glass.
southphillyman··on McDonald's Says Goodbye Cashiers, Hello Kiosks
I prefer kiosks for these type of transactions. The only problem I see arising is if a customer has a specific question about a menu item, though I can't remember the last time I had a question like that.

Maybe the 3-4 cashiers this displaces can now focus their efforts on helping out in the kitchen or perhaps roving the dining area providing Chick Fil A level service by getting me refills or taking my tray away.
