southpawflo··on Alligator Eggs and Lambda Calculus (2007)
thanks for the link, I enjoyed reading that
southpawflo··on Chromecast Google TV now has full-screen auto-playing Chicken Tender Wrap ads
Friend, you've hit the nail on the head.

As another example, I purchased an Xbox One years ago. Imagine my surprise when I turned it on this past November 3rd only to see a fullscreen ad for a videogame, before I could even sign in! And then again for some gamedev conference only a few weeks later!

Not sure (but pretty sure) that from the Xbox 360 onwards there have always been advertisements on the 'dashboard' - but you never had to explicitly interact with the ads before you could do anything else with the darn thing.

southpawflo··on E-ink is so Retropunk
it's funny that this pops up a few days before I return the remarkable 2 (through their 100-day money-back guarantee, otherwise I wouldn't have tried it).

to anyone considering buying one, if you are left-hand dominant, skip it. what most people don't understand is that being a lefty doesn't mean that you can use a mirror image of what's served to righties (in this case, the UI) and then everything is fine.

don't get me wrong, I'm returning it for several reasons - a few can be inferred from other people's comments here. I'm only putting this out there for all my sinister siblings, 'cause writing english is a pain for us.

southpawflo··on Lagrange Pre-Release – A Gemini client that also supports Gopher and Finger
I had some difficulty with this as well, but [1] had the answer: after toggling the repo on, swipe down so that fdroid force-refreshes the repo list.

southpawflo··on Ask HN: Software with biggest potential for positive impact in 5 years?
tackling communications security and privacy:

southpawflo··on How to Learn Nix
to preface, I'm not saying that you don't know this, but maybe for others:

gentoo is not a linux distro either (from a certain point of view), more a meta-distribution, where you use the package manager (portage) to build everything from source.

fun fact: docker uses alpine linux, which for a while was a gentoo build, until it got to a point where it could bootstrap itself.

southpawflo··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (February 2022)
To be decided.

I prefer radio frequency to infrared.

I'm always on the lookout for the door into summer.

Mise en place, which vim naturally follows. Problem solving and critical thinking have been more useful to me than any particular technology.

It's funny, I just spent over a decade getting good in one career, to the point where I could work almost anywhere, and (among many others it seems) have recently decided to have nothing to do with it anymore. I'll need to write one up at some point.

southpawflo··on Dad and the ten commandments of egoless programming (2012)
the way I've understood 'blood sport' was that the particular sport never matters, the important parts are the viciousness and cruelty involved. so for me, martial arts = sports, and cockfighting = blood sport.
southpawflo··on The Star – Arthur C. Clarke (1967) [pdf]
I vaguely remember something along those lines as well, perhaps about C. S. Lewis and the Narnia series? It's been a while though.
southpawflo··on Project IceStorm: open-source toolchain for Lattice iCE40 FPGAs
I was led to this work because of the fomu [1]. Also, if you're familiar with the Precursor [2] you'll realize the second, smaller fpga inside is the iCE40 as well (which makes sense, the same people responsible for tomu/fomu are involved with the precursor).

southpawflo··on Amazon’s answer to delivery driver shortage: Pot smokers
after all, what's the difference between a drunk driver and a stoner driver?

the drunk driver runs the red light, and the stoner keeps waiting for the stop sign to turn green!

southpawflo··on Ask HN: My friend made it big. How to handle?
lol ask if he's hiring - for a friend, of course.

and if he's been in a different economical strata than you for a while and it hasn't changed things on his end, sounds like you have a real friend. don't screw that up over financial jealousy.

southpawflo··on Become Shell Literate
because then your shell will be slower than a snail.

for real though, after looking at your examples I feel that features like those would fall on your terminal emulator to bring to the table, not the shell itself.

specifically, I don't want to imagine trying to connect to a headless server during some crisis over bad wifi and have the shell think it needs to send a bunch of graphics to me.

southpawflo··on Selfie – Tiny self-compiling C compiler, RISC-V emulator and hypervisor
at the bottom of the linked page the author explicitly references oberon as a source of inspiration for this project
southpawflo··on Show HN: IDE for Learning RISC-V
this is awesome, thank you for making this. there is a distinct lack of materials to help with learning just risc-v assembly, without going to c and I look forward to playing with this.
southpawflo··on Run full Linux distros or specific applications on top of Android
works well for me with a nexus 5x and foldable bt keyboard. also if you have a google chromecast you can turn any hdmi monitor/tv into your display. you can zoom in and out by 'pinching' in termux and make the text suitable for any display
southpawflo··on Another Reason to Learn Morse Code: Kidnapping
I don't know. I feel that speed is not important to me, it's the accuracy (gained with practise, of course) that I want. I make a lot of typos, it takes me much longer to edit something on a touch interface as my thumbs just don't seem to be very accurate. I guess you could say I'd rather slowly input the right thing the first time than to edit it quickly the second time
southpawflo··on Another Reason to Learn Morse Code: Kidnapping
I've tried several morse keyboards for android, but all of them seem to be more fun than useful. if only I could get a cross between the hackers keyboard and morse, I could stop finger fucking these tiny screens and actually type what I want
southpawflo··on It all made sense when we found out we were autistic
I am constantly 'running a social simulator' in my mind. I was diagnosed as autistic a few years ago in my mid twenties.
southpawflo··on After over a decade of Vim, I’m hooked on Emacs
that's why I love spacemacs - with the default setup, you hit the spacebar and a text based gui with all the possible options pops up. it allows me to continue to actually work instead of floundering about for some simple action while hammering the keyboard shortcuts into me through repetition
southpawflo··on Why Is It Taking 20 Minutes to Mine This Bitcoin Block?
I've had multiple teachers tell me that if you can't explain something you don't completely understand it yet. grok what I'm saying? :)
southpawflo··on Opioid epidemic costs West Virginia $8.8B annually, study says
even though I'm being downvoted I'm still curious as to what the defs are
southpawflo··on Opioid epidemic costs West Virginia $8.8B annually, study says
what are the definitions for an honest day's work and pay? do you think that the definitions would be the same between a 6th generation american white male and a 1st generation american latino male?
southpawflo··on The Blockchain Is Bigger Than Any Bubble
with today's privacy and security concerns, for any new project, would starting from a position of anonymous trust despite the increased resource requirements really be a downside? I ask as an outsider to the industry. I do understand that blockchain tech doesn't need to be slapped onto everything, but from my perspective it seems the benefits generally outweigh the detriments - at least so far
southpawflo··on Some .io nameservers are returning wrong results again
it's interesting, last night I was trying to get to sci-hub.io and all that showed up was a blank page. I assumed due to the nature of the site that maybe it was taken down but instead it's a .io problem
southpawflo··on Assume positive intent
call me an asshole but instead of trusting or not trusting people, I trust that someone will always look out for themselves first and others second. I'm never surprised when they act that way and pleasantly surprised when they don't.
southpawflo··on Ask HN: Share Your Raspberry Pi Project
http://www.embeddedadventures.com/as3935_lightning_sensor_mo... that's the breakout, this is the python library you can use with it: https://github.com/pcfens/RaspberryPi-AS3935/
southpawflo··on Ask HN: Share Your Raspberry Pi Project
a post on hackaday.com led me to a lightning sensor breakout board that connects at 3.3V which is perfect for a rpi. since I live in florida I jumped at it. just got it hooked up the other day, unfortunately NOAA's lightning strike database is a few days behind so in a day or two I'll be able to check the accuracy of it. it's my first electronics project with the rpi and I have definitely learned a lot already
southpawflo··on Ask HN: DevOps learning resources
get a digital ocean account and a domain name. start a lamp server (or equivalent), use the excellent (imo) documentation to get things running. add services as you go along. I learned a lot from just that, now I have my own webserver, source control (git server with gitea) and other things running. tons of fun and learning
southpawflo··on The Brain Can Only Take So Much Focus
ice water is an american thing, room temp water european. stems from the history of ice production, if you're interested the book 'imbibe!' by david wondrich talks about it
