source99··on Startups that launched at Y Combinator S16 Demo Day 2
Can someone explain why their are so many startups concentrating on India? Is it in part due to the overall expansion of the internet and economy?
source99··on Ask HN: Failed interview, feeling unemployable and depressed – what do I do?
Read the book Bounce by Matthew Syed. It was pretty entertaining and gave me a whole new perspective on raw intelligence vs learned skill.
source99··on Oracle Buys NetSuite for $9.3B
I think most companies can be characterized this way: "Develop a business that generates large cash flows, then relentlessly plow that money into more profitable side ventures."
source99··on GitHub was down
Are there companies out there that include Github as a critical part of their infrastructure such that if the web front end or GIT hosting goes down that their production servers are affected?

I'm sure there are but how many people would actually have been affected by this specific outage which only seemed to affect the web front end?

source99··on Hacker News' “Who is Hiring?” thread, part 2, remote and locations
Just for fun:

$300K pre tax. Tax rate of 40% $180K after taxes High Quality Child Care for 2 Children = $6K per month or $72K / year

108K after childcare

3Br house in SF - http://sfbay.craigslist.org/search/hhh?search_distance=4&pos...

Call it $6K / month or $72K per year

$36K left after housing + Childcare + taxes.

$3K / month for transportation, food, clothing, vacations. Good luck...

source99··on Mental Models I Find Repeatedly Useful
A technique I often use to test a theory is to change the inputs to be the maximum and minimum possible values and see if the model still holds true. I've found it to be incredibly useful in a few specific situations.
source99··on More awful IoT stuff
Has a security engineer ever reviewed anything that had good security?
source99··on Leaving CMU
What does a professor at CMU make?
source99··on Blue. No, Yellow
Regardless of my opinion this was a very entertaining read.
source99··on WhatsApp is back online in Brazil
And now Facebook is down for me entirely.
source99··on Your heart rate at gunpoint
The heart rate numbers themselves don't seem to make sense to me. 164 at the peak seems low for the drama/gravity of the situation.

I work for a very large wearable company so I have some knowledge of how heart rate sensors work

How did he know the timing of the peak? If he had a log it most likely simply had a time stamp of seconds. How does he correlate a random time stamp to the specific moment days after the event. Same comment about his heart rate hitting 130 when he shoves the gun into his ribs.

In general the story just feels fake.

Edit: do thieves really ask you to unlock your phone and banking apps? What app lets you send money that can't easily be traced?

source99··on Your heart rate at gunpoint
This article seems fake to me. The story feels a bit made up and the end reads like a tag line: "If you want to find out why I had the wearables on me — check out emozia."
source99··on Amazon Echo Dot
How are these 2 "new" products different from the normal echo?
source99··on An Open Letter to My CEO
$1245 per month for rent = 80% of her salary. $1245 / 0.8 = $1556 after taxes. $1556 * 12 months / year = $18675. Assume tax rate of 25%. Gross pay before taxes = $25,000 $25,000 / 8 hours per day / 5 days / week / 50 weeks / year = $12.50 / hour.
source99··on HN Office Hours with Michael Seibel and Aaron Harris
There is nothing more than a handshake. No vesting schedule. 1 LLC.

We have been close friends for 20 years.

source99··on HN Office Hours with Michael Seibel and Aaron Harris
Hi Michel and Aaron,

2 friends and I started an infrastructure inspection automation software company. We have 1 big customer.

2 out of 3 of us see big potential in expanding the software and customer base. The 3rd has very little drive and wants to milk our 1 big customer for every penny. We but heads every time we discuss anything.

When we started the company we split the equity 1/3 each(big regrets).

Suggestions on how to move forward?

source99··on NASA Study: Mass Gains of Antarctic Ice Sheet Greater Than Losses
The theory that people will be healthier by decreasing fat and increasing carbs has led to our current obesity epidemic. I would classify the science performed that got us to this point as fulfilling your requiremen.
source99··on Forecasting is a talent – luckily it can be learned
I've read a number of studies that contradict your statement. They say that the ONLY thing that matters is the amount of practice and natural skills play no part in level of mastery.
source99··on Forecasting is a talent – luckily it can be learned
Did not read the article.

All skills can be learned and there is no such thing as natural talent for a specific skill set.

source99··on Show HN: Live Simple – Tiny homes
What do these things sell dollar / sq foot? Some quick calculation show about $240 / sq foot. Better then SF bay prices but probably not better than most of the rest of the country.
source99··on Ask HN: Why did the Amazon fire phone fail?
I am also curious on people's thoughts relating to the design chops at Amazon.
source99··on Ideas are Cheap
This seems like it's all about the fear of failure.
source99··on YC Stats
Is there a calculation for REAL ROI?

Not based on current valuation but based on actual exits and money returned to YC?

source99··on Show HN: Murder Board – advice and feedback for anybody with an idea for an app
Conceptually this sounds interesting but I feel almost no one is truly qualified to judge an idea unless you are an expert in that specific field and even then i'm hesitant to believe you can predict quality ideas in the future.

Its fun to judge people's ideas but you guys don't have an expertise in any specific fields. At least you don't even talk about it on your site.

source99··on Ask HN: I've got 6-7 hours of uninterruptible time. What should I do?
Yes.
source99··on Ask HN: I've got 6-7 hours of uninterruptible time. What should I do?
Also a Great suggestion. Just drank a large coffee though so sleep won't be in my near future. Though my flight was just delayed...
source99··on Ask HN: I've got 6-7 hours of uninterruptible time. What should I do?
Wow. Great suggestion. Thanks.
source99··on Ask HN: Can you get to AWS?
What percentage of admins(or people that care about these status) are in PDT compared to the rest of the world? If it's in UTC then everyone would have to do one conversion instead of nearly all people doing 1 conversion.

Also I know my offset from PDT but I don't know my offset from UTC so it's also saving me the step of having to lookup that offset also.
