I stopped just shortly after that -- the end of the article.
sound2man··on How To Live (Comfortably) on $36 A Month For Food
With the audience on here, I doubt that internet is considered "non-essential". It sounds to me that he ate a pretty balanced diet. Not gourmet by any stretch of the imagination, but plain, and for the most part, healthy food.
sound2man··on Skype As We Know It May Not Exist Much Longer, eBay Says
My bad, EBay. All other comments still apply.
sound2man··on The Pirate Bay should stop activities in Netherlands, court rules
Since torrent traffic doesn't pass through the Pirate Bay site, is it even possible for them to block traffic to the Netherlands?

It would seem far more plausible to put the onus on the ISPs in the Netherlands to block the traffic, though it would be blocking a lot of legal torrents as well.

sound2man··on Ask HN: Who are you?
IT at a general contracting firm specializing in municipal water structures.
sound2man··on Skype As We Know It May Not Exist Much Longer, eBay Says
It's the end of the world as we know it...

I really don't think that there is much or a danger of skype disappearing - it's too valuable. Worst case scenario is that it reverts back to it's previous owners and/or continue under a different name.

But, realistically, I doubt that anything will change. EBay has deep pockets, and I'm sure that they won't give this up easily. I doubt that they would license a technology, and then lose the license without a fight. Ebay does not like egg on its face.

It's amazing how the majority of black hat hackers listed turned out to be successful bussiness men once they "see the error of their ways"

It appears that they compromised systems because they were bored, or merely wanted to prove it could be done.

Thanks for the article, good read.

If you can stretch a cable across a "chasm" chances are that you can pop an I-beam in there instead. That would solve that problem.

I have used F-Prot extensively (20 licenses) and it stinks. A real resource hog, and very ineffective at removing viruses. Stay away - it's barely worth free.

The main problem with android (for me) is the lack of CDMA phones. I am on the SERO plan with sprint - $30 a month for voice, data, and text - and I am not switching for any phone. If there were android phone in Sprint's line up, I'd be game.

I do not have an iphone, and I don't want one at this point. Jailbroken they look intriguing, but not stock. I need PDANet.

sound2man··on I really want to like Apple (but they don't like us)
because they make (for the most part) nice stuff.
sound2man··on I really want to like Apple (but they don't like us)
Not just on their Ipods either. You also get a goofy cable on their macbooks and on the shuffle headphones. And now they cut the firewire from the macbook line (I think the mackbook pro still has it). One hand gives and the other takes.
sound2man··on Ask HN: What do you drink?
Iced peppermint Tea. The most refreshing drink in the galaxy. Much easier on the head than the Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster too.
sound2man··on IPhone vs. Android: Will Apple-Microsoft history repeat itself?
Maybe, but more elegant android software would have to be developed. Much as I personally don't like the touchscreen only design, lack of removable battery and lack of expandable storage, I have to admit that it is a very sleek piece of hardware.

All android phones that I have seen are rather clunky and outdated in appearance, IMHO. Put android on something like the palm pre, and you have a real win.

sound2man··on Is Cursive Handwriting Dead?
I took penmanship in school.I never used it, and now write in all caps when using a pen and paper. It's just as fast, and a lot easier to read. Penmanship is an art, beautiful as an art form, but really inconvenient as a form of communication.
sound2man··on Do You Know a High-Achieving Student Kept From College Because of Money?
Yes, but they were not in a public school, but rather a small private school. Mostly A's with a couple B's. Not too tragic though, as he has a better job now with more room for growth than most of his peers that did get their BA's.

It's all about drive. If you have drive, you will succeed regardless of you formal education. A motivated person will not remain ignorant, even though they may not have the certification to prove it.

sound2man··on How Palm Re-Enabled iTunes Sync
I don't think that we can really site security issues on this, as the pre cannot access any DRM data at this point. So there cannot be any aggreements with vendors.

Only if the Pre was accessing DRM protected media would that be a valid point. I think there is more than a dash of pettiness involved here.

sound2man··on Apple hardware changes alter Microsoft "Hunter" ads
I don't really get the point of this article. Different tools for different jobs. I have both a dell latitude E6500 and a white macbook. They are both really nice machines, but not really "apples" to apples.

Do research on what software you need, what you want to get done, and... Well I guess I'd better stop preaching to the choir.
