soultrees··on Supabase Local Dev: migrations, branching, and observability
Respect. This is how you build a winning product and make your users feel heard. Take note upcoming class.
soultrees··on Project IDX: An experiment to improve full-stack, multiplatform app development
Cool, but I don’t have the emotional capacity to invest more time into another product that google will just shut down in a few months. I’ve been burned way too many times now.
soultrees··on Movie extras worry they'll be replaced by AI. Hollywood is doing body scans
As someone who has done background work many times in Vancouver, I’m left wondering why society needs to ensure that background actors continue to work other than the optics of it all. It’s not a great job, you spend 14 hours just waiting to walk past a window that’s so far in the background and out of focus that it’s completely unrecognizable as a human, you get less respect on set than the physical prop objects, and you get overpaid for hr amount of actual labour involved, considering most of it is sitting around stuffing your face with free food.

Human actors are one thing but background acting provides little value outside of the immediate camera vicinity in the scene.

I suspect that we are going to have a lot of low value jobs start to disappear and the rallying call will be the same about how AI is bad, etc etc. but everyone is assuming the amount of work is finite.

soultrees··on Show HN: Phind V2 – A GPT-4 agent that’s connected to the internet and your code
When the intention works then it helps. But as it stands it seems like an extra layer of fluff. If it’s primed to ask a question after every input, even when the instructions are clear as day then it automatically has to find a question to ask about, and will often ask irrelevant or questions that take you down the wrong path.

The type of question being asked, and also deciding IF a question even needs to be asked, needs some work. That’s all.

soultrees··on Show HN: Phind V2 – A GPT-4 agent that’s connected to the internet and your code
Until this happens and until you can verify that you’re not indexing every conversation to the open web, this is enough for me to full-stop using your service. I was under no impression whatsoever that the threads were made public.
soultrees··on Show HN: Phind V2 – A GPT-4 agent that’s connected to the internet and your code
Whoa what. This a game breaker. I’ve been using this tool for some personal side project stuff and had no idea that this was happening. Whoa. Not good.

To edit: I was never expecting full privacy as I assumed everything being fed into your service was being padded to your data set to make phind a competently fine tuned agent, but open web is not good.

In the end, the amount of times I’ve sworn at your bot with some foul language after it forgets everything on the 3rd chain and I have to go back and redo everything, will probably harm your seo if those swears get published. Just saying.

soultrees··on Show HN: Phind V2 – A GPT-4 agent that’s connected to the internet and your code
I love phind. It has helped me a lot but the hard coded (or heavy weighted) ‘ask user question’ after every single query can be too much. Especially when it asks to see parts of the code that aren’t relevant to the task, and it does this is so much that I started to wonder if you were trying to scoop up more code blocks just to increase your data set.

I’ve noticed the same actually, it started about a month or so ago.
soultrees··on AI won’t replace humans, but humans with AI will replace humans without AI
Llama for the win.
soultrees··on Tell HN: ai.com used to redirect to chat.openai.com, now it redirects to x.ai
Not an idiot. I know it’s something we say in passing as a way to belittle ourselves to our mistake and that nobody takes it at face value but by you saying you’re an idiot, even in the most casual passing, deeply ingrains a thought that you are indeed an idiot. Which you are not, because if you were an idiot then you wouldn’t even know and therefore wouldn’t even be calling yourself an idiot if you were.

This isn’t a dig at you specifically but just a comment to anyone who reduces themselves over a minor mistake.

soultrees··on Unconfirmed video showing potential LK-99 sample exhibiting the Meissner effect
Curious, what does the text flying by on the screen say on the bilibili video? I’m always amazing at the cultural differences in design and how Chinese apps tend to always be so busy. Everything feels like a slot machine.
soultrees··on Patterns for building LLM-based systems and products
Very informative. I bookmarked it.
soultrees··on Meta starts process to end news access in Canada over law on paying publishers
Which is hilarious because imagine a news site not being able to publish on google or Facebook. Short-sighted at best. Goodbye news site.
soultrees··on Trying to become a better developer by learning more about aviation
On the contrary I think the impact of linguistic choices is everything. Even subtle changes can have huge downward effects.
soultrees··on Greg Rutkowski Was Removed from Stable Diffusion but AI Artists Brought Him Back
What’s even more depressing is how you’re reducing the artist only to the stuff they make and not the impact or the journey the artist had to get to this point. Art is more than just visual junk food for our brains to feed on, art is there to push the boundaries of what art is. Which Rutkowski surely did and perhaps now his current style will be washed away but I can promise you, art is not going to just stop because the artist knows a computer can copy them. It’s up to people like Rutkowski to move the needle forward again even with new tools like generative art.

I can confirm that least in my circle, creativity has never been this high. We are going to see some art that you can’t even fathom come out in the next few years and it’s all going to be due to this generative AI push we’ve seen the last few months. Art will change, artists aren’t going anywhere.

It’s like saying we shouldn’t use these fancy new washing machines because the people who hand washed them for years would be left with nothing to do.

soultrees··on Why Is Everyone Watching TV with the Subtitles On?
I haven’t seen anybody else mention this but I turn on subtitles, and watch foreign shows because it forces me to turn off my break and focus. If I look at my phone or start reading the internet, I lose where I am in the story. So it’s an escape and the subtitles keep me there without thinking about it.
soultrees··on Guide to running Llama 2 locally
Can you do more videos on preparing the data and scraping data? I noticed you seem to be proficient at it by your terminology and it’s something I want to dive into more.
soultrees··on Ask HN: How do I train a custom LLM/ChatGPT on my own documents?
MVP comment right here. Thanks for taking the effort to type this up.
soultrees··on Ask HN: How do you find clothing?
Unfortunately, Reddit is a no go zone anymore.
soultrees··on Classifying customer messages with LLMs vs traditional ML
Maybe that’s the method behinds Reddit’s api madness this whole time. (/s). Now only the hugest brands can run their own bots
soultrees··on Ask HN: Problems for the next decade?
For inspiration what are some easy problems to solve and then what are some of the more difficult problems to solve on the same path?
soultrees··on ChatGPT drops 10% traffic, as the hype around it wears off
It adds up. I stopped chatgpt when I discovered phind + copilot.
soultrees··on AI weights are not open “source”
Just a thought, what would happen if all copyrights were abolished or the generative AI revolution we’ve been seeing will continue to the point where almost everything machine generated to a point, and therefore, open season if derivative copyright isn’t protected, then what would actually happen to the US economy?

I don’t buy the argument that people just won’t innovate anymore as there won’t be an incentive anymore just doesn’t cut it. There are multiple motivations that exist simultaneously, for example - governments have a motivation to technologically advanced compared to peer nations, humans have an inherent desire to create, power, notoriety, etc etc.

So in that case, let’s just abolish the first layer of incentive that actually uncovers more greed than anything by absurd copyright laws and just open the flood gates and get rid of all copyright. We need some real innovation and all this babble about who owns an ‘idea’ is way too restricting.

soultrees··on Thousands of species of animals probably have consciousness
Because our western agriculture demands depends on us believing they don’t.

But in the end I suspect everyone believes it internally but that Big Mac tastes so good that we’d rather be blind to it. These studies bring it to the forefront again.

soultrees··on H100 GPUs Set Standard for Gen AI in Debut MLPerf Benchmark
That’s only because the companies with marketing budgets and marketing teams are the ones you are implying.

There is serious research going down right now, but you don’t see you typical medical research department at your university buying ads on Instagram.

soultrees··on Brains on Drugs: How tinkering with consciousness became a societal sin
Addiction is a lot more prevalent than you think.
soultrees··on How the most popular cars in the US track drivers
It’s not ‘when’ it’s ‘if’. And let’s be honest here, if you get into an accident, someone else is already calling 911 as well.

So in exchange for being spied, your data sold to third parties (likely), and knowing every place you visit at every time and know your movement patterns better than anyone, you get the protection of someone calling you, (if it’s a serious accident you’re probably not answering and if you’re answering, you can probably dial a cellphone. At least 9/10 of the 1/100000 chances of a serious accident).

Just curious if the trade off is still worth it for you? I don’t know, I know I don’t.

soultrees··on A new study looks at how exercise can help alleviate anxiety and depression
I bet you look great though.
soultrees··on Top secret U.S. Navy system heard titan implosion days ago
Great chance to look for Russian subs.
soultrees··on Top secret U.S. Navy system heard titan implosion days ago
My first thought was it was the perfect cover to increase increase patrols on looking for Russian subs. There’s almost certainly 1 or more out there, and with this disaster, it gave them the cover they needed to prevent the media from breaking out into a ‘USA looking for Russian subs, this is war” and being the population into more hysteria.

My other thought was that if they showed up alive then it almost definitely was was a cover but I suppose I was on wrong on that front. Still think the story gave them the opportunity to drop a lot more sonar buoys and increase patrols and ‘look’ for something.
