sorum··on Anthos support for multi-cloud is generally available
Istio is part of the service. As far as my knowledge goes, the main components of Anthos are:

- Anthos GKE: managed Kubernetes across GCP, AWS, on-prem via VMware vSphere

- Anthos service mesh: Istio + SRE practices (Cloud Operations)

- Cloud Run: Knative serverless

- Anthos Config Mgmt: policy & security automation

- Marketplace: 3rd party applications for Anthos

Disclaimer: work for Google, but nowhere near an expert on Anthos. Just going off of some notes I took last week.

sorum··on Fed should pay every American, let hedge funds and billionaires ‘get wiped out’
This. Very much this. If you (as someone nearing retirement) have your funds on auto-pilot, they'd have the right allocation.
sorum··on Open letter from Italy to the international scientific community
Italy isn't the worst case, they're just 2 weeks' ahead of most other countries.

Looking at the latest SitRep from WHO, my home country (Sweden) has small no. infected (775), but grew 25% vs the previous day. If that rate keeps up, number of infected will keep on doubling every 4-5 days and in 14 days' time will be at what Italy is today (17k infected). And then another week later it'll break 100k. Exponential growth is a bastard in that sense.

sorum··on Ask HN: Best solutions for keeping a personal log?
If you're in the US, I'd recommend checking out either Mint (by Intuit) or Personal Capital. Both use OAuth for the banks who support it. No handing over of bank credentials to a 3rd party and the sync is near real-time from my own testing of both.

https://mint.intuit.com/ https://www.personalcapital.com/

If you want something with more functionality to do budgeting, You Need A Budget (ynab.com) has a lot more functionality in that department, but does not support OAuth connections to banks; in my test period I had to re-add my bank accounts constantly. Shame, because the functionality of YNAB is stellar overall.

sorum··on Ask HN: Best solutions for keeping a personal log?
Second this. If you're in the Apple ecosystem and want something with markdown, I can't vouch enough for Bear https://bear.app/
sorum··on Joplin – a note taking and to-do application with synchronization capabilities
My bad, was a bit unclear. I was referring to the latency in Notion. Planning to give Joplin a try today...looks very promising indeed.
sorum··on Joplin – a note taking and to-do application with synchronization capabilities
How's the latency these days while you work with it? For me it was the latency while using it that was just a bit too annoying
sorum··on Blending complex systems made my latency 10x higher
But with that title the author wouldn't have gotten those juicy clicks
sorum··on Half of us have quit our job because of a bad boss (2015)
Funny how little things change. In their 1999 book "First, Break All the Rules", Gallup laid out their findings from over 1M interviews that:

- People join companies for the vision, brand, comp etc...but they leave because of their direct manager

- The direct manager determines how long an employee stays and how productive he/she is during their tenure

The 2 main parts of the book look at:

a) how you attract and retain the most talented employees, what things matter to them the most (compensation didn't make the cut)

b) traits of great managers

Book still holds up, worth a read: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/50937.First_Break_All_th...

sorum··on AirPods Pro
Exactly this. When in-ear buds became the standard (90's?), the lifespan would be dictated by how quickly the cable frayed.

Step 1: superglue

Step 2: tape

Step 3: buy new ones

sorum··on Americans Now Need at Least $500k a Year to Enter Top 1%
Valid point. The counter-points I most often come across are:

- Estate taxes: the government wants its pound o' flesh

- Squandering: the wealth is generally gone by the 2nd or 3rd generation. I remember this from The Millionaire Next Door (W. Danko), which is from the 90's, but I haven't come across anything to date stating that the trend has been reversed.

sorum··on Google Cloud Worth $225B, Deutsche Bank Says
Usually, it's a case of "You get what you pay for".

For GCP, you can get 4-hour response time SLA for $100 per user. If you want 1-hour response SLA it's $250. Then there's Enterprise Support if you need 15-minute response SLA, TAM assigned etc which costs more.

Caveat: I work at Google Cloud.

sorum··on Leak of Microsoft Salaries Shows Fight for Higher Compensation
No one's going to comment on the fact that when Microsoft employees want to collaborate, they turn to Google Sheets?
sorum··on iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max
Fair point. Once you start listing it out, you see how confusing they made it for users:

- OS X = "OS ten" - iphone X = "iphone ten" - Xcode = "ex-code"

sorum··on iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max
The X was roman numeral 10
sorum··on Ask HN: How Do You Read?
> I cannot read without a pencil

If I had to choose one recommendation to give others, this would be it. You don't read with your eyes, you read with your pen.

Read fewer (better) books and really internalize them. This 99% of the time requires you to take notes that you revisit throughout and after your read.

sorum··on Composing better emails
Indeed, it's the MOST important part.

Easiest way to do it - write it dead last.

Write your email in this order: 1. Body of email 2. Formatting: fix the paragraphs, bold/underline, create headers if longer piece 3. Subject line

sorum··on Ask HN: Best office chair for home office work?
Oooh, at $429 from Dell, that's a nice 27" 4K at a nice price.
sorum··on Ask HN: Best office chair for home office work?
I can also second that: a 2nd hand Herman Miller Aeron that you've tested before making the purchase; one of the damn best investments you can make.

Have had mine for 6+ years now and it's outlived pretty much everything in my home office, save for a Dell U2713HM, which is still such a nice allrounder (27" 1440p IPS).

sorum··on Getting 2FA Right in 2019
Regarding people getting access to your 1Password account, things have gotten better recently.

1Password supports 2FA to login to the vault itself and most recently Webauthn security keys on browser, which I immediately switched to. On mobile it’s still TOTP, but better than nothing. I’ve got 2 physical keys and Google Authenticator as only 2FA methods.

Once U2F is supported on mobile, I’ll drop TOTP altogether for my 1Pass login. Probably buy another Titan key and throw into the bank box.

sorum··on Support for U2F security keys
You must have had better ones than _that_, when you were thinking up a witty reply. I hope that wasn't you bringing your best.
sorum··on Support for U2F security keys
$2.99 per month is too steep of a price to pay for your personal security? Really? I'd dump my Spotify/Apple Music/Netflix/whatever in a heartbeat, if I had to choose between paid subscriptions in my life

sorum··on Switch from Chrome to Firefox
That's what I've done. Thanks for confirming that I wasn't missing anything. I still think the Chrome implementation is the gold standard, but it's without a doubt workable in Safari.
sorum··on Switch from Chrome to Firefox
> better 1Password integration

Am I using it wrong in Safari?

Because to me the Chrome integration with 1Password X extension is by far the easiest, you get the dropdown right there in the field. In Safari, I have to click the 1Password extension button next to the address field and then select Autofill.

sorum··on Ask HN: Which great products didn't succeed?
Its run was short (less than a decade), but during the late 80s it did fairly well: reportedly 5-6M units [0] sold. It was popular in Europe, less so in the US; similar to Sony MiniDisc, which was actually successful globally during its run, but just not in the US.

sorum··on Ask HN: Which great products didn't succeed?
As a workaround, I kind of like that idea!

The other option is to keep the next actions in a separate list (or app), with a link to the email. Then you face the problem of context switching between 2 apps, so yours is better.

I just with that I didn't have to open the email to see the note I'd written myself; Inbox was so clever that the reminder was right under the subject line.

sorum··on Ask HN: Which great products didn't succeed?
Apart from what’s already been mentioned (bundles, general UI, speed etc), the killer feature for me was how Reminders were integrated into the email itself. When an email came in that I couldn’t quickly resolve and move on, I’d write the short ToDo to myself about what I specifically need to do.

Back in Gmail I go to my flagged/starred emails and I know I’m supposed to do something about the email, but many times I’ve forgotten what what specific action was, so I open up the email, read through it and realize that I for some reason or other won’t take the action right now. Having to ”rediscover” actions in emails is such a waste of time. With Inbox there would be clear ToDos written, so I could easily scan a list of emails and pick the right one to take action on.

Also very useful with emails containing many actions within, but only one or a few are left unresolved, or an email with useful links for future reading, so easy to specify what in the email I should focus on and thus ignore the rest.

RIP Inbox. Miss you dearly.
