sorryforthethro··on Barcelona Fines Landlords Who Let Buildings Sit Empty
I can't actually validate your claim, but the Federal reserve increased their rates by 0.25% in December, which translates to some % increase in prime mortgage rates, which ends up restricting the average home buyer's price window by some %, some other things I don't understand, and uh, prices drop?
sorryforthethro··on Ask HN: How many hours/week are you expected to work in SV/NY/other tech hubs?
Ah, it's not so precise, especially at a startup. A lot of bias and favoritism, and employee hired after you might curry favor with the CTO and show up 4 hours a week and never get fired, while you get hounded for more (no extra pay) overtime. Such is Silicon Valley.
sorryforthethro··on Online activists are silencing us, scientists say
Maybe it's pessimistic, but I also see a profit motive here, the "psychological" CFS treatments have the potential to cut into modafinil/etc recurring profits.
sorryforthethro··on High-tax states like California and New York make it hard for rich to leave
That is the hypothetical reason, but in practice, what are the services that low-tax states consume disproportionately? In WA state I can't think of any, other than federal programs that use the land (like nuclear containment)
sorryforthethro··on Scientists brew cannabis using modified beer yeast
This is somewhat outdated, LEDs are now powerful enough and emit much less heat.
sorryforthethro··on D6tflow: Python library for building data science workflows
Also interesting to see what happens when such a library becomes nested within a more popular library. Disabling should still work, but fewer people would be aware.
sorryforthethro··on Indonesia reports reduced deforestation, triggering carbon payment from Norway
I absolutely disagree. Inserting the government into the average citizen's balance sheet can and will be corrupted.
sorryforthethro··on Ask HN: How to be productive with big existing code base
That's nothing. Try a 10 year old PHP codebase with remnants of a failed GWT integration.
sorryforthethro··on America’s Professional Elite: Wealthy, Successful and Miserable
In my limited experience, and excluding obvious exceptions to the rule, the people who make 7-figure salaries are chosen for those positions because they are over-leveraged, and thus controllable.
sorryforthethro··on Indonesia reports reduced deforestation, triggering carbon payment from Norway
Not just simple fraud, but a major hurdle is how to regulate CO2 necessary for producing consumer energy without creating a regressive tax structure. Once CO2 is converted to electricity on the grid, it's fungible and impossible to sort out luxury vs necessity.

Imho, government trying to sin-tax away CO2 is result of our failure to invest in technology solutions.

sorryforthethro··on Audio AI: isolating vocals from stereo music using Convolutional Neural Networks
Also, the time investment to learn a congruent field's jargon is often much greater than just making up words and let the internet peanut gallery sort out the synonyms for you.
sorryforthethro··on Google and Facebook should be regulated for news content, UK government report
I do think it's important to teach these types of critical analysis skills in grade school, however, this bill is quite limited in scope:

> On or before July 1, 2019, the department shall make available to school districts on its Internet Web site a list of resources and instructional materials on media literacy, including media literacy professional development programs for teachers.

sorryforthethro··on Searching for "Antarctica" on YouTube returns conspiracy videos
Certainly those videos are more watched than other videos on Antartica (from shear clickbait factor alone), but also, most content on Antartica is in the form of copy-written documentaries that legally shouldn't be on YouTube, so there might be some bias in that direction as well.
sorryforthethro··on My Parents Are Flat Earthers
Sorry again, of course the majority of FE are a bit cargo-cult; but the root of it is "fallacy of authority" no? There aren't many ways to tangibly justify the shape of the Earth to the average person. If all the images are photo-shopped and all the data is fraudulent, suddenly the world is a whole lot darker. And as much as it seems, the joke that the true edge of the flat earth is a mental illness diagnosis, says more about us than them.
sorryforthethro··on Anxiety and burnout: why kids are consumed with worry
> I constantly feel like disaster looms around every corner.

Sorry if this is unwelcome, but I recognize this feeling very well. I'm a lifelong CBT patient, in CBT we call this "catastrophizing", recognizing when you are falling into that thought pattern is the best way to break out of it.
