soofy··on Finding X in Espresso: Adventures in Computational Lexicology
Neat data visuals. Especially the networks of letter tpancisions when words change spelling, I never saw this idea expressed before. I showed this article to my friend and he got mad at me, he was always correcting poor souls on evil of eXpresso ;-)

soofy··on Tiny, Winged Robots Show Agility in the Air
"Inspired by the biology of a fly, with submillimeter-scale anatomy and two wafer-thin wings that flap almost invisibly, 120 times per second, the tiny device not only represents the absolute cutting edge of micromanufacturing and control systems; it is an aspiration that has impelled innovation in these fields by dozens of researchers across Harvard for years."

soofy··on Damn Excel – How the 'most important application' is ruining the world
Well, what a about detailed study? Quoting from abstract:

"Microsoft’s continuing inability to correctly fix errors is discussed. No statistical procedure in Excel should be used until Microsoft documents that the procedure is correct; it is not safe to assume that Microsoft Excel’s statistical procedures give the correct answer. Persons who wish to conduct statistical analyses should use some other package."

This is a funny sarcasm on the topic:

They are saying Excel - established data tool - is, in fact, dead for big data. And what else matters?

I thought this girl does an incredibly good job educating via modern media.

soofy··on Google Earth Fractals
I wonder how hard would it be to measure their mathematical properties, like fractal dimension. Perhaps using image processing tools. I heard the simple box counting method is not perfect for complex natural structures. Does anyone know any published algorithms?

A talk by the authors: http://www.weizmann.ac.il/complex/tlusty/talks/Loops2012.pdf

Some discussions in forums suggest some possible relation with other self-referential constructs in math such as recursive functions, logical paradoxes, Godel incompleteness, etc.

soofy··on Physicists extend special relativity
I also gave link to the original article. PhysOrg also gives link to the original article and cites a few other sources. I thought in this particular cases it was fine as an overview article.
soofy··on Language learning makes the brain grow, Swedish study suggests
Yes, I was wondering the same thing. I bet MRI would show something different and interesting for skillful programmers. Even though no spoken counterpart is developed.
soofy··on Physicists extend special relativity
Quote from original paper: "In this highly controversial topic, our particular purpose is not to enter into the merits of existing theories, but rather to present a succinct and carefully reasoned account of a new aspect of Einstein's theory of special relativity, which properly allows for faster than light motion." http://bit.ly/RswJIr

That's BTW an old Russian idea. The key concept of the space elevator appeared in 1895 when Russian scientist Konstantin Tsiolkovsky was inspired by the Eiffel Tower in Paris to consider a tower that reached all the way into space, built from the ground up to an altitude of 35,790 kilometers (22,238 mi) above sea level (geostationary orbit).[6] He noted that a "celestial castle" at the top of such a spindle-shaped cable would have the "castle" orbiting Earth in a geostationary orbit (i.e. the castle would remain over the same spot on Earth's surface). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_elevator

Very nice and free. I wonder how tedious the process is.
