sonicggg··on Overhauling Mario 64's code to reach 30 FPS and render 6x faster on N64 [video]
He has patreons backing this project, so he may actually owe them something.
sonicggg··on Overhauling Mario 64's code to reach 30 FPS and render 6x faster on N64 [video]
Why wouldn't Nintendo release the source, considering they're is little commercial value in this particular game now?
sonicggg··on BCI lets completely “locked-in” man communicate
Very curious on what is his motivation is to keep on living. There's really no hope for any meaningful improvement in quality of life. Latest research was just so disheartening, as apparently ALS is a prion-like illness.

As of today we barely have a good grasp on treating viral illnesses (and even bacteria is coming to bite us back). I don't foresee any effective treatment for this type of illness in the next few decades.

sonicggg··on Show HN: Make your PDF look scanned in browser
To comply with dumb signature requirements. I needed this a couple of times. Usually it goes like this. You fill out a PDF form electronically, and add the signature via Adobe. Then you email it.

A lot of the times the recipient will complain that the signature was not handwritten. They want you to print it, sign it and scan it again. So you do this trick to make it look like you followed this process.

This website is not the first one that tries to achieve this. But I would not trust uploading anything to a random Web server though.

I usually do it via command line. You can use ImageMagick (i.e via the 'convert' command) to achieve the same result. It's very handy.

sonicggg··on Why the Arrest of a Lebanese Doctor Should Terrify Every Visitor to the UAE
Yeah, France is probably not a good example. They never had much backbone there. In 10 years, Paris may as well be under Sharia law.
sonicggg··on CatalanGate: Spyware operation against Catalans using Pegasus and Candiru
This is on full display in Canada today.
sonicggg··on “YouTube-dl” and “Pirate Bay” back on DDG
DDL is a fringe search engine. They are not doing themselves any good by crippling their search results. It's just going to push the 10 people still using their stuff away.
sonicggg··on Reversing hearing loss with regenerative therapy
I am in the same boat. In my case, I think Covid affected the microcirculation in my ear. I've been having success in addressing it through therapies to promote blood flow and endothelial repair.
sonicggg··on Paleontologists Are Trying to Understand Why the Fossil Record Is Mostly Males
Interesting to see that the whole "Why men die younger?" debate should just be "Why males die younger?" instead. Does the testosterone turn us into reckless idiots?
sonicggg··on A man bought a cruise ship on Craigslist
Even a simple sailboat will cost you around USD$3000 of upkeeping costs per year. I can't even begin to imagine what are the costs associated with this monstrosity.
sonicggg··on Elon Musk makes $43B unsolicited bid to take Twitter private
Musk does not hold any position in the government. My understanding is that the fight for free speech is about the government censoring individuals. The first amendment of the US already protects people from that. Any private platform can do whatever they want though.
sonicggg··on Mexico truckers protest new Texas inspections, halt trade at border bridges
We find it silly how Russians are calling their war a "Special military operation", but have we stopped to think how we call our trade arrangement here as the "North America FREE TRADE Agreement".
sonicggg··on RaidForums gets raided, alleged admin arrested
They could find legitimate work, yes, but you're forgetting that they do it for the thrill. Just like people can be passionated for their careers, so can a black hat hacker or a scammer also find pleasure in his craft. Not saying it's the right thing, but I understand the appeal.
sonicggg··on Chinese inmates had hearts or lungs removed during executions, study says
At the same time I'm not wearing any clothes made in North Korea or Venezuela, same as pretty much everyone. How exactly is it making a difference on the lives of those people living under those regimes? The nice thing about the Ukrainian war is that it's going to show how overrated economic boycott is in practice.
sonicggg··on Chinese inmates had hearts or lungs removed during executions, study says
So China infringes on human rights, in other news "water is wet". Not really newsworthy. I would be shocked if it was Iceland or Norway doing that.

As much as we hate hearing about it, only the Chinese people have the power to make changes to this regime. Having met many Chinese students abroad, I'd say they are OK with this happening. Either they are apathic, or supportive of their totalitarian regime.

sonicggg··on I need to find an apartment
The pandemic allowed remote work to flourish. Why are people still crowding the cities? And of all the places, specially Berlin. Not even that great of a city. A lot of my friends fled the city.
sonicggg··on Canada to ban foreigners from buying homes
5% can do a lot of damage considering how prices are set based on "comps", and the fact that a lot of this foreign capital comes from illicit sources, and they are more than willing to pay above market rate to secure the purchase.

Canada has always been a paradise for rich crooks worldwide, and government has always chosen to turn a blind eye.

sonicggg··on Canada to ban foreigners from buying homes
I live in Canada, and the real estate business is such a mafia. They are leeches, and I'm not sure how much value these real estate agents are providing.

It baffles me how this industry has not yet been disrupted by an outsider, like Uber did with taxis. I still remember when taxi licenses costed a fortune, and you had the exact same leeches exploiting it. They were seen as an investment in some cities, like NYC.

I know there are useless regulations that keep these agents being needed, but so there were with taxis as well, and Uber did not give a crap.

sonicggg··on Germany has seized control of Gazprom Germania
How many years has Merkel remained in power? This awkward situation is all her doing, but still nobody will mention her name. How can one country willingly put its entire energy sector in the hands of a terrorist state, which has been showing signs since 1999 when bombing its own citizens.
sonicggg··on Refusing to apologize can have psychological benefits (2012)
It does not seem you read the article.
sonicggg··on How the Channel Tunnel changed Europe (2019)
Author is British, probably still think they are the main protagonist of the World.
sonicggg··on New Mexico Will Make College Tuition Free for Residents
I'm in favour of post-secondary education being publicly funded, but what does it acomplish at a state level?

Even sovereign countries have a problem with brain drain. I assume that this would even be more pronounced with states. I don't think New Mexico 's job market can compete with some other parts of the nation.

It would be better if there was a national policy, to keep a level playing field. Otherwise New Mexico is just subsidising someone else's economy.

sonicggg··on Lebanese turn to cryptocurrency as economy tanks
I've met many Lebanese immigrants, both in North and South America. Crazy to see how well they integrated and succeeded in such little time. Entrepreneurship seems to run strong in their community. Lots of really large companies are run by Lebanese and their descendants. Very similar to Indian immigrants.

Unfortunately this success has not been mirrored in their own country. There is nothing valuable being produced there, both in natural and human resources. I can only conclude that all the smart ones left the country.

I also do not see how turning to cryptocurrencies is going to make a difference this late in the game. There are not that many places in the World that can run a profitable mining operation. That's why most mining pools are Chinese. You also need capital to set up a rig.

sonicggg··on The Uselessness of Phenylephrine
Canada is indeed very frustrating. It's great for simple things like a broken arm. But the reality is that it's years behind in treatment of complex illnesses. There are a lot of people in Canada that travel to US to see specialists, when they can afford.

US is also able to attract the best professionals, including MDs. Here in Canada we're left with the "leftovers". Those that did not make it big in life.

sonicggg··on Hackers gaining power of subpoena via fake “emergency data requests”
It sounds like EDRs shouldn't really be a thing. If police needs a court-issued warrant to enter my home, why can't they enforce the same for data access?

If there's one thing I learned from practice in programming is the more "exceptions" you make, the more room there is for bugs and security flaws. The same applies for everything. Keep rules simple. The more "if this, then that" you add, the more loopholes you may find.

sonicggg··on Twilio employees, associates charged with insider trading by SEC
Agree with that, it's a bad analogy. These guys that got caught are the tip of the iceberg. They probably did something reckless in the process.
sonicggg··on Twilio employees, associates charged with insider trading by SEC
According to the article, they 'concluded in a joint chat that Twilio’s stock price would “rise for sure.”'

I bet there are a lot of folks doing this out there, but they are more careful. So they had a non-encrypted chat room about it. It'd be funny if they found this in the company 's Slack workspace.

On top of that, they involved a bunch of other family members. That's too much.

sonicggg··on Whatever happened to QuickTime?
You could make a series out of these projects. Another one that suddenly died is RealPlayer, which used to be herpes back then.
sonicggg··on $20 to Mint Your Prayers on “The Blockchain”
Unbelievable, someone managed to connect two of the most useless things on the planet: religion and NFTs. That seems straight out of an Onion article.
sonicggg··on I let a baby bird nest in my hair for 84 days
I 100% knew it had to be a well-off white woman doing this without even opening the article.
