sonicggg··on What happens to TLDs when their country stops existing?
That's interesting. Why won't the Taliban just license it, like other places do? I don't need to go to Tuvalu to buy a .tv domain. I'm guessing embargoes may play a minor role, but China still trades with them.
sonicggg··on Success in Canada means moving to America
You must be talking about poor people's perspective. US has the best healthcare in the World for those that can afford it. Canadians already travel south of the border to seek care. The alternative for them is to wait in line for several months, or even a couple of years, and see their condition progress until get to see a second tier specialist.
sonicggg··on Success in Canada means moving to America
There are two separate continents: "North America" and "South America", which are more separate than Asia is to Europe. Sometimes people refer to them as "The Americas", in plural.
sonicggg··on Success in Canada means moving to America
The worst side of Canada is what people have done to real estate. This is going to bite back the country eventually, it's really just a giant Ponzi scheme now.

They kind of forget that most well educated Canadians can easily go south of the border for better opportunities, cheaper housing and surprisingly better health care.

sonicggg··on Success in Canada means moving to America
Problem is that, compared to US,Canada is not very self-sufficient. The average Canadian imports a lot of stuff. Kind of limited what you can grow in this frozen wasteland.
sonicggg··on Eight hundred employees resign after WhiteHat Jr asks them to work from office
Can someone enlighten me? Why would they resign instead forcing the employer to fire them? Like by not going to work or just doing a shitty job.

If you quit, you're giving up on severance or unemployment insurance benefits.

sonicggg··on Elon Musk praises Chinese workers and says Americans try ‘to avoid going to work
There must me Tesla employees that visit HN regularly. If you still work there, even after such an announcement, you have no self-respect.
sonicggg··on Japan's population falls by record 644,000 to 125.5M in 2021
Do I really need? Are riots now supposed to be common and accepted?
sonicggg··on GitHub will require 2FA by the end of 2023
Let's just remind ourselves that we're not born with attached cellphones. These things get broken, lost, stolen, etc. Besides, some people do not own one. How will they solve the problem of folks getting locked out? And if anyone says there is a workaround for cases like this, then what problem is it solving?
sonicggg··on US “I” bonds to deliver a record 9.62% interest
Of course they are the inflation-protected bonds. I guessed that given our currrent economic situation.

A bit of a clickbaiting title though. 9% return is nominal. This is inflation-adjusted after all, the expect real return is still the same. Just a reminder that times are tough.

sonicggg··on US Court Orders Every ISP in the United States to Block Illegal Streaming Sites
Are US courts not aware of VPNs?
sonicggg··on Hertz to face 100 new false arrest claims from customers
Why are these cases civil, and not criminal? If I make a false report to the police, in sure I'll get criminal charges against me. Why is it different of its a company?
sonicggg··on The $440M software error at Knight Capital (2019)
My brother worked in a medium-sized fintech not long ago. This example is shown in their onboarding process. I guess the same goes for other companies out there.
sonicggg··on Limb lengthening surgery is becoming more popular
You're comparing apples to oranges. Not trying to guess your height, but it seems you got personally attacked by the fact that society in general looks down on short guys.

Different from skin colour, there's an evolutionary trait to height preference. Studies have shown that heterosexual women prefer partners taller than them. It's understandable this subconscious bias. And what seems like discrimination, it's just a natural product.

Similarly, men have always shown preference to larger breasts and hips, signs of fertility. We can't, even shouldn't, shut down our instincts due to politically correctness.

sonicggg··on Covid patients pushed medical extremes in life support breakthrough
If you are bad enough to need ECMO, you may as well wish you were dead. Not sure what is better.

Little is talked about the life of these people after they are "saved", whatever that word means. Besides sequelae from Covid itself, you're getting ECMO sequelae as a cherry on top. You can't just go back to life as it was.

sonicggg··on Japan’s plan to dump nuclear waste into the pacific ocean may not be safe
Credit on environmental issues? Greenpeace has a very different opinion about it. Japanese are very sketchy about their whale hunting practices.
sonicggg··on Public Money, Public Code
If it's hard enough for to tech companies to hire skilled developers, I can only imagine what the bar is for public work. They might even resort to hire some brain damaged people.
sonicggg··on Public Money, Public Code
Exact same story with publicly financed research going behind paywalled journals. If we're paying for it, we should have access.

Maybe time to have an equivalent of SciHub for code as well, although it will probably be harder to source that.

sonicggg··on Report: 90% of nurses considering leaving the profession in the next year
I know Ontario all too well. The same people that depend on nurses won't do more than needlessly beat pots and pans for their "heros". They do not even support them with their votes, which put in power the nefarious Conservative party. Who exactly are the nurses standing for? People that won't have their back.
sonicggg··on Payment startup Bolt sued by its most prominent customer
In that case they offer even less value than I imagined.
sonicggg··on Report: 90% of nurses considering leaving the profession in the next year
Nurses complain about their work conditions, but I don't understand them. They had this massive leverage during the pandemic to discuss improvements. Some people may say "Oh but it is illegal for nurses to strike in country X", but what will governments and companies realistically do if all nurses decide to stop, arrest everyone and let the health system collapse? Not a reasonable option.

There's just something masochist about their profession.

sonicggg··on Payment startup Bolt sued by its most prominent customer
Ouch, they are valued at $11 billion, that's insane. I smell a lot of bag holders.

How do they explain this valuation in a market where payment processors are a dime a dozen? I purchase a lot of stuff online, and have yet to find a merchant that uses Bolt.

sonicggg··on Show HN: Linen – Make your Slack community Google-searchable
I truly hope you succeed in getting as many communities as possible. This adds a lot of value to everyone.
sonicggg··on Locked down in Shanghai, I’ve caught a glimpse of our techno-dystopian future
I feel for people that were born there. This is just a Western journalist that has willingly decided to go to China. There were never guaranteed civil liberties, even before he decided to move there. It's just that now it is an inconvenience for him, so he decided to vent.
sonicggg··on Show HN: Sqwok – A social chat alternative to Twitter and Reddit
I disagree. SimCity 4 was a game created for the masses, not just HN. It used to have the same nonsense loading screens, like "Creating Llama oxygenation". These are honestly more common than we imagine. Never seen anyone confused about it.
sonicggg··on Twitter owner transition: Temporary ban on product updates after Elon Musk deal
The Twitter's CEO will get booted for sure. Otherwise he will have to admit he is a hypocrite, as he made clear he had a very different vision than Musk.
sonicggg··on CDC Alerts Providers to Hepatitis Cases of Unknown Origin
Considering we're in the middle of a pandemic, and that there's no vaccine approved for infants, there's not much mystery there.

Of course they will avoid like plague having to make that connection. Just like they tried to cover up the fact that Sars-Cov-2 is airborne (too expensive to admit it).

Scary that US is not even the first country to report this.

sonicggg··on The bottom is dropping out of Netflix
Not a money problem. I have a Netflix subscription, and yet end up going to pirate websites more and more often these days. I'll probably just cancel my Netflix subscription.

It's so frustrating to see that 90%of the shows I want to see are unavailable on Netflix. Video streaming is just so fragmented right now. And they try to compensate with a bunch of low quality Netflix original shows.

Why can't they just replicate what has been done in audio streaming? Spotify is what Netflix should have been. It's been years I no longer need to pirate music.

sonicggg··on Senators want to mandate anti-piracy technology across the web
> "For example, in December 2020, Tillis introduced legislation to make it a felony to run a pirate streaming site. Just two weeks later, the proposal was attached to the massive 5,600-page, $900 billion COVID spending bill. As a result, Tillis' bill became law before most lawmakers—to say nothing of the general public—had time to read it."

Is it just me, or democracies have been flirting quite often with authoritarianism? Canada, for example, has been taking some worrisome measures recently. Now US is following suit, although in a much smaller scale.
