I have a newsletter with writing advice for software developers: https://writingfordevelopers.substack.com/

It's semi-paused right now, but I am wondering if I should make it active again. If you like it, I would appreciate your feedback.

soneca··on AI is not our future
> "The product is about manual drawing. It’s difficult to imagine where would you insert the AI in that process."

I can imagine. In fact, I wrote a scifi novel that imagines it! :)

In the story, the idle elite has painting classes with an AI teacher. They have levels of engagement they can choose from: see something and paint it, see an AI-made painting of that something and copy it, copy it over projected lines into your canvas, paint only the filling colors over AI-created lines delineating it, let the AI-teacher-robot fix the painting for you after you are done. Every student goes home happily with the same painting in the same high AI-made quality. :)

soneca··on Ask HN: What projects do you donate to?
I donate every month to https://freeCodeCamp.org

It was my main learning resource when I was changing careers to become a software developer 8 years ago. It was a very successful career change, both financially and in regards to my satisfaction with my profession.

On a time when expensive courses and bootcamps were all the range, I feel like I wouldn’t have much better than this free resource. Thanks freeCodeCamp!

soneca··on Launch HN: Better Auth (YC X25) – Authentication Framework for TypeScript
Tangentially related, but have you thought about a go to market strategy related to AI?

I started a new side project with Cursor to see how it goes, and it suggests a lot of packages for a lot of things (often not even suggests, assume you want it and ask you to install already).

I imagine there will be a “AIO” AI optimization field soon. Have you considered at all?

I mean. If I explicitly ask Cursor models to use Better Auth for authentication, will any of them be able to use it?

A possible thing for you to work on could be to prepare a prompt with links to your documentation that I can copy and paste in Cursor (or whatever) and will successfully implement it in my project.

EDIT: If you want to give it a try at one now and post as a reply here, I’ll gladly try it. It should say to substitute Auth0, as I am already using it, in a NextJS 15 web app that uses Neon serverless Postgres as DB. But I can tweak those myself later too

soneca··on Elon Musk's Grok AI Can't Stop Talking About 'White Genocide'
I saw this early in a response to a patio11 tweet. Very weird. The grok response about South Africa is not there anymore

This would be it:

soneca··on Four years of running a SaaS in a competitive market
I would blame 90% of your lack of bites at your horrible mobile UI.

Mobile UX is important for everyone. For content creators, your target market, is crucial. If you postponed it for any other feature, you underestimated it.

For what is worth, I had a great experience using Cursor/AI to make a web app style mobile friendly. It also did some help with the copywriting as well. I would give it a try if I were you.

No intention of being harsh, but, from my point of view, your mobile UI is breaking your business. So immediate action seems advisable.

Good luck!

soneca··on Four years of running a SaaS in a competitive market
Try to convert people that you know and trust you. You might learn why you are not converting people that do not know you
soneca··on Four years of running a SaaS in a competitive market
Good example. I paid for Cursor for my job (with company credit card) without even knowing that Aider, Windsurf, Supermaven, cline and roo existed.

Actually, except for Windsurf, I only learned about the others from your comment.

soneca··on Show HN: I’m 16 years old and working on my first startup, a study app
I wouldn’t say scam, but definitely low effort vibe-coded product
soneca··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (April 2025)
Rebuilding most of my serial literature + newsletter service for fiction writers because I used FaunaDB for both DB and authentication and now they are shutting down by the end of May.

soneca··on “Most promising signs yet” of alien life on a planet beyond our Solar System
I always thought that how far things are in the universe and the impossibility of faster than light travel were enough to explain why life might be abundant in the universe yet we never observed it.
soneca··on You Don't Have Time Not to Test
Do you think early startup product might be an exception?

Since whole features can be quickly ditched frequentl. Sometimes even complete product pivot.

soneca··on Rules for Negotiating a Job Offer (2016)
Which rules would be different in particular, you think?
soneca··on Show HN: I built a word game. My mom thinks it's great. What do you think?
I think it has some potential, but I found today’s puzzle just too easy. I never play for speed, but even if I was, playing on a iPhone, it missed a lot of touches that I only noticed when I was typing a few letters ahead. So I had to come back, erase what I typed and start over. It was annoying already, but if I was playing for speed, it would be a deal breaker.
soneca··on An image of an archeologist adventurer who wears a hat and uses a bullwhip
Yep, and what if good things only exist because they were created by and for those who can tell good from great.
soneca··on An image of an archeologist adventurer who wears a hat and uses a bullwhip
I wonder if really great stuff are always for a minority. You have to have listened a lot of classical music to notice a great interpretation of Mozart from a good one. To realize how great was a chess move, how magical was a soccer play, how deep was the writing of a philosopher. Not only for stuff that requires previous effort, but also the subjectiveness of art. Picasso will be really moving for a minority of people. The Godfather. Even Shakespeare.

Social media and generative AI may be good business because the capture the attention of the majority, but maybe they are not valuable to anyone.

soneca··on Overengineered Anchor Links
Nice read. Although I much prefer the first solution, the hotfix of adding extra padding to the bottom. UX-wise, not just because it is simpler.

On large screens I prefer to not read texts at the bottom (I always scroll things enough so I am looking at them at the middle or top of the screen). Also, the positioning of the heading relatively to the screen is always the same on every scroll.

soneca··on Ask HN: Any jobs that don't force you to always be advancing career wise?
All startups that I worked paid very decently, just not FAANG level.

This no-in-between you describe is for founder only, I believe.

soneca··on Ask HN: Any jobs that don't force you to always be advancing career wise?
Not on “up or out” companies. But, sure, my suggestion would be to find another company without that mentality
soneca··on Ask HN: Any jobs that don't force you to always be advancing career wise?
I am a senior web developer (7 years of experience) and I also am pretty much comfortable where I am. The company that I work on is definitely happy with the arrangement too, as I don’t get (nor expect) aggressive salary raise and the company is not profitable and with a short runway.

Maybe that’s the spot, find a small company (doesn’t have to be a startup without cash). There won’t be place to grow, so they actually prefer someone without that kind of ambition.

At least, it works for me so far

soneca··on Age and cognitive skills: Use it or lose it
The abstract has these two statements:

> ”Cross-sectional age-skill profiles suggest that cognitive skills start declining by age 30 if not earlier.”

and

> ”Two main results emerge. First, average skills increase strongly into the forties before decreasing slightly in literacy and more strongly in numeracy”

Does this mean that this study contradicts the popular common understanding that cognitive skills decline after 30? Or am I missing something?

For me, personally, if feels a more impactful finding than the “use it or lose it” one

soneca··on Forget Twitter Threads; Write a Blog Post Instead (2021)
I believe that since these things have not ceased to exist once FB came up, we were never close.
soneca··on Things we've learned about building products
Your premise that it is a hard task (that I agree with) doesn’t lead to the conclusion that stopping doing how it is done now will be harmful to the company. It just might be the opposite.

Also, the GP seems to wonder about better ways to do interviews, not stop doing those entirely

soneca··on Things we've learned about building products
In Brazil, it seems to offer, but it amounts to a very good compensation, not a retirement-in-10-years compensation.

Levels.fyi puts the total compensation of a L5 at ~$140k/year

soneca··on How a key ingredient in Coca-Cola, M&M's is smuggled from war-torn Sudan
I think which ingredient is being smuggled from a war-tone is the least interesting part of the article for me
soneca··on The Era of Solopreneurs Is Here
If you can pay the influencer game that might be a good path.

There are influencers of all sizes, it can scale accordingly (maybe not equally effective for all sizes for all niches, though).

soneca··on Winners of the $10k ISBN visualization bounty
Where the database is from? How and how often is it updated?

I have two self-published books with ISBNs. Neither of them has the details in the 1st place submission (I assume it won’t be in any other as well?).

One was published on Feb 23 and the other on Dec 24. I had hoped at least the older one would be there. Does anyone know why they are not?

The ISBNs:

- 9786500718836

- 9786501276830

soneca··on A vending machine, on the internet
For me it is indeed
soneca··on The CRPG Renaissance, Part 3: TSR Is Dead
There is nothing stopping anyone. I am just saying that there is a clear change in behavior of playing with Lego from two decades ago to now. A look at the assortment of a Lego store should make that clear.
soneca··on The CRPG Renaissance, Part 3: TSR Is Dead
> ”In the past, it had been promoted as a game of free-flowing imagination, primarily a system for making up your own worlds and stories. In the future, the core rules would be marketed as a foundation that you built upon not so much with your own creativity as with other, more targeted TSR product”

I saw this happening with Lego as well. The free-flowing possibilities of buckets full of Lego bricks to created whatever you could imagine are now mostly gone. Kids and adults alike now buy Lego boxes with very specific bricks and a huge manual with a very exact step-by-step instruction. If you skip even one step the whole project is unfinishable. Those boxes actually punish creativity.

soneca··on Troubled electric truck maker Nikola files for bankruptcy
There is also this older one (when they launched?):

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=11683508

To give HN credit, the overwhelming sentiment at the time is that this was a very suspicious and scammy endeavor already right at launch.
