someotheridiot··on The Mathematics of Lego
If anyone is interested I have access to this kind of data (via Rebrickable.com) so can redo these calculations using more recent sets.
someotheridiot··on I'm starting to think LEGO is evil
I'm waiting for the day I have enough to do a Scrooge McDuck and swim through mine :)
someotheridiot··on Show HN: Rebrickable - Combine your LEGO sets to create other sets
Thanks. Yes unless you have hundreds of sets it appears there is very little chance of getting a 100% complete build. However, some people would argue this is a good thing as it forces you to figure out how to get the extra few % yourself :) I want to add some more functionality here to try and assist people in finding suitable replacement parts.

As for the MOCs, yes originally it had only a few but now that is accelerating. There are 34 right now with about 50 more in my backlog. As it becomes more popular, more people contact me asking to submit their MOCs. I still need to build the self-submit feature!

The idea of listing sets to buy to reach 100% is a good one. I haven't been too sure how much people actually find that section useful. The idea in my mind was "if you buy this set you are effectively getting 2 for 1".

Tech stack: Linux, PostgreSQL, Memcache, PHP with jQuery for front end stuff. Nothing very fancy but the algorithms have been designed (several times!) to be very fast.

I've spent the last 6 months working on this site which has been a hit with the lego community, would love to get any and all feedback!
someotheridiot··on Social network Hi5 dumps Linux/Postgres for Windows Server
So many wtf's in this. "The company made the move in order to lower costs and improve flexibility for the social network" "Untangling the site from dependence on specific OS and database versions" "The tough part is that the competent employees essentially engineered themselves out of a job. St. John said he appreciated their efforts."
someotheridiot··on Poll: What database does your company use?
Me too... in Excel 95's VB for applications! fun times.
someotheridiot··on My life in Accenture before startups
I'm the same - worked myself to death while there, but don't regret it now. I truly learnt some amazing skills and life lessons. Now I earn more than I ever did there (10 years!), have far less responsibility, have far less time pressure to work under... and am bored stupid most of the time :(
someotheridiot··on My life in Accenture before startups
My friend is still working at Accenture (sigh) as a senior manager and he says the only purpose of the first interview is to weed out the morons.
someotheridiot··on My life in Accenture before startups
When I started with accenture 10 years ago, I was the only coder in my startup group and part of the induction was basically to see how well I could help out my team and get them to finish their work.
someotheridiot··on Top Missing PostgreSQL Features
I'm trying to do something similar to copy databases around. Another problem with doing the parallelism manually is that you have to worry about all the annoying dependencies between tables, constraints, functions etc. Arggghhh.
someotheridiot··on Top Missing PostgreSQL Features
Yes, Oracle's tracing capabilities are awesome. I too have regularly traced individual production sessions. A quick tkprof later (well maybe some dev time too) and that 10 mins report now runs in 10 secs.
someotheridiot··on Top Missing PostgreSQL Features
I think you forgot to finish your sentence. You were about to say how to do it?
someotheridiot··on Is reddit becoming unusable?
Very frustrating. I just know there's a window of a few hrs in the morning (for me) in which its usable. The rest of the day I don't bother trying.
someotheridiot··on Think twice before you attend an interview at Accenture
Bummer. I worked at Accenture for 10 years and can understand the difficulties in claiming expenses, lost a lot of money over the years because it was just too damn hard sometimes.

Regarding the pay, the first few years I earned minimal salary but then it went up very fast. Very few people last that long though ;)
