someone_here··on CSS3 vs. CSS: A Speed Benchmark
This is the kind of benchmark I like to see for any technology.

Anyone know of anything similar for other web technologies?

someone_here··on FTP is 40 years old
SFTP is not FTP over SSH: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SSH_File_Transfer_Protocol
someone_here··on Show HN: my weekend project - sell files for bitcoins
Google updated their stuff this year, so 2011 is fine.
someone_here··on Evil.css: an evil stylesheet for injecting into unsuspecting users' webpages

Apple may not be against innovation, but they are trying to control innovation. That is inherently counter to innovating, and is an oxymoron.

You're saying that this simple 5 dollar chip (not 1 as you claim, by the way) doesn't hurt innovation, but it does. For instance, what if you wanted to connect your arduino to your iphone? Is it really worth paying 5 dollars to connect a 7 dollar chip?

Now suppose it is still worth it. Could a programmable microcomputer get by Apple's "Works with iPhone" standards? Not a chance.

I can think of a hundred cool things to do with an iPhone connected to an arduino, but those are all dead. I can think of a hundred more pieces of hardware I'd love to connect to my portable phone, but those can't work either.

Innovation can't get out of Apple's box.

someone_here··on RStudio,a new IDE for R
It's strange and awesome how the linux world always works out these collisions even though there's no governing body or group.
someone_here··on Getting shot by a handgun
Any amount of material can be moved any distance with an infinitesimal amount of force, given enough time... or maybe I'm missing something.
someone_here··on Getting shot by a handgun
Total firearm-related death rate per 100'000 for the US: between 10.2 and 15.22.

For the UK: 0.38 to 0.46

someone_here··on Tablets
The real thing that makes these "tablets" interesting is the number of features they have packed into them. The "ease of use" that people are talking about when referencing Apple's products is just a part of Apple's marketing for their devices. Android (and Maemo and MeeGo and etc) devices are much more capable and much more hackable. Why the praise for such a bland device such as the i-OSes when there's an awesome OS and device market sitting right next to it?
someone_here··on Nokia's MeeGo is doomed - A summary of Dublin's MeeGo Summit
As an N900 user who has never had an N810, I love it! The keyboard is fine for hacking and the screen is pretty high resolution. The CPU is fast and it has lots of memory. The JDK works great on it too :)
someone_here··on Remind HN: Unicode hacks
┌( ಠ_ಠ)┘ How dare you take my unicode from me.
someone_here··on Mozilla: first impressions from China
A number of reasons: Everyone else is using windows, you're familiar with windows, all your software runs on windows, and installing Ubuntu requires a lot of downloading when a version of Windows is a cheap disk from a local store.
someone_here··on Thoughts and a crazy prediction on ipv6
But will China forbit connections to IPv4 addresses? That seems pointless and harsh. If they still allow connections to IPv4, I don't see why people will bother to switch.
someone_here··on Internet blacklist bill COICA one step closer to becoming law
What if there was a new service that simply takes the blacklist and "fixes" the DNS. You could type something like http://blacklis.tr/piratebay.org and get forwarded to the correct IP. They could monitise the same way OpenDNS does by providing a DNS service as well.
someone_here··on Antimatter atoms produced and trapped at CERN
But easy to test with 2 atoms! Smash them together at a high enough speed where e=mc^2 says they would create a black hole. If they are destroyed in a blip of Hawking radiation, they had gravity!
someone_here··on The ~200 Line Linux Kernel Patch That Does Wonders
How do you stay up to date with Ubuntu's changes?
someone_here··on EFF: How to Deploy HTTPS Correctly
So I've been setting up all my sites as separate domain names, with things like code.domain.com and email.domain.com. Should I migrate these services, or is there a way to use HTTPS on many subdomains?
someone_here··on The ~200 Line Linux Kernel Patch That Does Wonders
Should I be pulling in the source from apt and applying the patch that way? I am forced to use nvidia's drivers, and I fear the vanilla kernel may not work.
someone_here··on Ugly Old Perl
One of the many things I love about Perl is how you never get that feeling of "I'm writing this again?" It's the first language I've used that really helped the developer, and it's what still brings me back to using the language.
someone_here··on Ask HN: What can I build for you today?
Cool!
someone_here··on Ask HN: What can I build for you today?
I would like a shared to-do list that is suitable for touchscreen devices.
someone_here··on Kinect and your kids: What works, what won't
Bit of a conflict of interest coming from MSN.com, don't you think?
someone_here··on Ask HN: What do you think of the D language?
It depends on what you'll be doing. Go might be a better language for server stuff, but D has quite a large game creation community behind it.

someone_here··on Microsoft furious at $2,000 bounty for open source Kinect drivers
I just can't see myself flapping my arms to lower a projector or jumping up and down to mute a microphone.
someone_here··on Why You Should Be Using Virtualisation In Your Development Environment
Why do applications think they can manage my memory better than my kernel?
