somebodythere··on AI Dungeon will block certain words, review content flagged as inappropriate
Won't someone please think of the ASCII children?
somebodythere··on Paid in Full: an internet where every interaction is a financial transaction
The payment friction can be taken away, but before every link I click, I would still be thinking to myself: "Is what I'm about to read worth ten cents?"
somebodythere··on Paid in Full: an internet where every interaction is a financial transaction
I can't imagine the situation has gotten better. How many pieces of web content does a person view in a typical day? 50? 100? Imagine making fifty purchase decisions every day. I think anyone would be exhausted.
somebodythere··on Canada Proposes New Regime to Block and Deindex Pirate Sites
Delaying the effects of puberty until a child can make informed decisions about how their body should develop is the least abusive option compared to witholding intervention and forcing the child to undergo a puberty which is likely to cause significant psychological harm.
somebodythere··on Show HN: Lofi.cafe
I figure it will have the same problem as GIF which is that each frame triggers a repaint.
somebodythere··on Show HN: Lofi.cafe
If it's only a few frames you might be able to arrange them vertically in a PNG and animate background-position to get the same effect for cheaper.

Correction: you want to use transform to force creation of a new rendering layer, then when adjusting the rendered position of the element using transform will not cause a repaint.

somebodythere··on NSFW Server Designation
Yes, from a technical perspective you are right. However, from a conceptual perspective, you can't see any of the content in a server without being specifically invited. There is no global search. You are clearly either "in" or "not in" a server unlike, say, a Tumblr tag.
somebodythere··on std::unique_ptr implementation backed by Ethereum NFTs
Making pointers on mainnet is expensive these days, I was able to stand up a Ganache testnet so that my pointers are created faster and at lower cost. Fantastic library.
somebodythere··on Ethereum Isn't Fun Anymore
Do it in a state channel or rollup.
somebodythere··on Show HN: Ad Network for Sideprojects
Alternatively, "blocklist"
somebodythere··on Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index
Ethereum's social contract has evolved to become much more "fluid" and open to change than Bitcoin's. Mainline Ethereum today is is very different in many ways to what it was two years ago. There is even a proposal with a lot of support to have transaction fees mostly burned rather than mostly given to miners. Aside from minority forks, something like that would never happen in Bitcoin in a million years.

So, while Bitcoin techinically could switch to proof of stake, it probably won't.

somebodythere··on Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index
You can make near-zero-cost ETH and ERC-20 transfers right now using L2 solutions like state channels and rollups. There are also a few POCs of applications like Uniswap running on L2.
somebodythere··on A pacifist's plan to survive the violent world of prison
The societal failings like prisons existing in the first place? The police and courts who supply a steady stream of fodder to the prison-industrial complex? The legislators who create innumerable and overbroad laws to give the above carte blanche to abuse vulnerable groups?

By all means, let us get rid of all of these things.

somebodythere··on What happened to Firefox Send?
A person abusing the privacy features of a file sharing platform to send unwanted files that damage people's computers is in fact, a bad thing

That is not an argument against privacy but it does make it harder to provider private services

somebodythere··on The Fed now owns nearly 1/3 of all U.S. mortgages
The Fed can make (create) money whenever it wants. That is its raison d'être.
somebodythere··on Tech firms face growing resentment of parent employees during Covid-19
yes i care about the quality of life for current and future humans but do not care about the perpetuation of humanity as a concept

if humanity came to a slow end, probably aided by robots in its twilight, that would be fine

somebodythere··on Developer won’t get hit by a bus, they’ll get hired by Netflix
True, but being intentional about the connotations of your language is still important.
somebodythere··on Child sexual abuse material could be going undetected because of ‘false reports’
I know; they were saying that this law wouldn't be enforced in a U.S. state because it's a mess to do so. That's not a strong argument because there is evidence of such laws being enforced despite the difficulty in assigning ages to a fictional character.
somebodythere··on Child sexual abuse material could be going undetected because of ‘false reports’
> Think about the mess that would be enforcing this law. You can't objectively determine the age of a fake character, unlike a real person.

It is certainly a mess, but that doesn't stop jurisdictions outside the United States from prosecuting it.

somebodythere··on Rackspace S-1
We didn't manage to raise rates to 2.5% in the longest economic expansion of modern history and you are thinking that they will be hitting 3-4% "soon"?
somebodythere··on Quotebacks – Quote the Web
There could be an extension to the model, where a quoter can provide a snippet to the author's website and request a signature (perhaps from a common path like /.well-known/quotesign.)

If the snippet does indeed come from the website in question, the website will return a signature which the quoter can embed along with the snippet on their own website.

The signature would prove that the content came from the same person who controls domain X (as attested by the CA fo your choice). The user agent can display all this information where the content is quoted.

somebodythere··on Warmest May on record, Siberia 10C hotter
Even better: as people start returning to work, they are afraid to take public transit or stand next to each other on the sidewalk, so there is an uptick in personal vehicle miles driven to above pre-COVID levels
somebodythere··on Gitlab phished its own work-from-home staff, and 1 in 5 fell for it
The best security is multi-layered. The human layer is the weakest part of any security system, and both technical and human measures must be taken to achieve defense in depth.

Some technical measures used here were requiring 2FA for all internal services, and scoping keys/POLP to limit the damage from one compromised key.

The purpose of exercises like these is not to shame someone who "fell for it", but to educate workers about phishing attacks and strengthen the human security layer.

somebodythere··on Jack Dorsey is giving Andrew Yang $5M to build the case for a basic income
One interesting insight of MMT is that taxing $1,000 from the rich and giving $1,000 to the poor, is not actually necessarily "free", or net-non-inflationary. Because the poor on average spend more of the money that they have (on basic necessities like food and consumer goods), causing prices of those goods to rise which reflects in headline inflation. Whereas money in the hands of the rich tends to result in inflation of financial asset prices.

If a redistribution of this sort did cause a too-high level of consumer inflation, some additional counter-cyclical policy would be needed to counteract it. (The point I'm trying to make is that making sure that federal spending debits and credits cancel out to zero is neither necessary nor sufficient for good economic policy.)

somebodythere··on 402 Payment Required, and why micropayments are doomed
It is broken in Ethereum. In Ethereum, since consistency is enforced by transaction nonce rather than UTXOs, there is no way for a "watcher" to keep the payer honest by rebroadcasting a previously signed transaction output. Indeed, in Ethereum you can "cancel" a transaction in the mempool by signing a blank transaction with a higher fee and same nonce, which is by design.
somebodythere··on Bitcoin Halving Just Occured
You can sell when a component leaves an index and buy when a component joins the index and–guess what–that portfolio also goes up.

somebodythere··on Bitcoin Halving Just Occured
The cryptocurrency markets are a lot less efficient than the traditional financial markets.
somebodythere··on Why is the stock market rallying when the economy is so bad?
> Unless you institute some kind of universal basic income

More than 100% of pre-crisis income for the service industry is being financed through the expanded unemployment and small business grant programs.

somebodythere··on AWS services to avoid
What I don't get was the broad internal push to building on AWS directly, which was great most of the time, but came with big downgrades in metrics and alarms if you were to use the AWS equivalent.
