somebodythere··on Inverting PhotoDNA
The requirement that changing the image a little bit changes the hash a little bit makes the image space smooth and more suitable for machine learning.
somebodythere··on Terms of Service: Monitoring and Anti-Cheat
The reason anti-cheat penalties don't really do anything is because people can just create a new account (on a free-to-play game) or play 20-60 dollars when they get detected. Video game developers usually won't ban cheaters for several weeks because it makes it harder to tell what program caused the ban. But it also gives you basically a guaranteed period of time to ruin other people's games.

I think in the future we might have a shared player registry for competitive video games, where people link their BrightID, basically proving that they are an individual without disclosing any additional personal information about themselves. And when they are banned for cheating, the ban is applied to their BrightID account, so they can't evade by changing IP/game account/etc. And other games by other companies can choose to look at this registry and reciprocate the ban as well. It seems like an effective, but less dystopic solution than throwing people in jail for in-game cheating.

Imagine future, with Neuralink DRM. You go to tell your friend the summary of the movie you just saw, but thankfully the implant was able to disable your vocal cords just in time to protect the intellectual property of the copy right holder.
somebodythere··on Web3? I have my DAOts
1. A lot more people are using Sign In With Ethereum than other kinds of signature-based auth to log into websites. The UX, while not perfect, is a lot more figured out.

2. SIWE lets the user share a cryptographically verified shared state of the user. For example, digital asset collections, reputation in a group etc.

somebodythere··on Proof of stake is incapable of producing a consensus
So... the consensus rules of the network changed, you need to make sure you have the correct client, and bitcoin is weakly subjective after all?
somebodythere··on Proof of stake is incapable of producing a consensus
If you use 100 watts incandescent light bulb to light your room with 1 watt LED would do, that is waste.
somebodythere··on Proof of stake is incapable of producing a consensus
The existence of feedback loops very much doesn't imply a stable equilibrium. Actually, any system that is not overdamped will necessarily not reach an equilibrium.

Or maybe the equilibrium is that no country bans it, and PoW currencies don't die on their own due to lack of financial rewards, and PoW artificially inflates the demand and therefore price of energy, leading first to widespread economic issues, then widespread ecological issues, until there is no one left buy pizza from with your BTC. Very compelling equilibrium.

Cool project. I am sure that if you call it AI instead of random you will be able to charge more.

somebodythere··on To be energy-efficient, brains predict their perceptions
I get these too, although I wouldn't describe it as suffering. Sometimes the images are detailed and tangible enough that it feels like looking at a printed photo through my eyelids. When the images are particularly interesting, I like to draw them.
somebodythere··on How badly is cryptocurrency worsening the chip shortage?
ETH stakeholders want ETH to go up so a change that minted a bunch more ETH in relation to PoS would probably be contentious.

Currently no hard cap on issuance, 2 ETH are minted every block, but ETH burn rate is expected to outpace issuance post-POS.

somebodythere··on How badly is cryptocurrency worsening the chip shortage?
If the market value of Ethereum GPU is similar to the market value of ETC to ETH, the impact of Ethereum on the GPU market should shrink by 98%.
somebodythere··on US inflation jumps to 31-year high amid global supply chain crisis
How does inflation help debt become more serviceable if incomes don't go up to match?
somebodythere··on Grand jury subpoena for Signal user data, Central District of California
The bar is "executing justice doesn't regularly cause more harm than the harm it claims to prevent." It's basically on the floor.

Well, the other bar is "the justice system follows its own rules." That's reasonable enough to ask, isn't it?

somebodythere··on Grand jury subpoena for Signal user data, Central District of California
The US government is too caught up in prosecuting victimless crimes, bullying defendants into taking plea deals (and forfeiting their right to a fair trial), handing out cruel sentences, and using evidence borne from illegal searches (while lying about it).

Until all of that changes I am not interested in giving them more ammo.

somebodythere··on Improving the New York Times’ line wrap balancer
Sure, you only need tens of breakpoints setting one style rule each. Gzipped I bet it would weigh about as much as the JS text-wrapper implementation.
somebodythere··on Improving the New York Times’ line wrap balancer
Does the server get the viewport size as part of the request?

The second problem is solvable though I think, by loading the JS text balancer asynchronously.

somebodythere··on Dislike button would improve Spotify's recommendations
I know that these implicit signals affect how I use the app. I might force myself to listen to a song I like, but would rather listen to something else at the time because I don't want my choice to skip to impact my recommendations in opaque ways.
somebodythere··on Dislike button would improve Spotify's recommendations
