some1else··on Some notes on Firefox’s media autoplay settings in practice as of Firefox 124
I use Safari instead of Chrome when I want twice the autonomy, and it's really strict to websites trying to play media without interaction. It doesn't even start loading YouTube videos until I click the giant play button. You never even see that button in Chrome, and I can't believe how much I now miss that basic sanity check. Chrome will even start playing dozens of tabs simultaneously if I open a collection of tabs from Bookmarks. Really think there should be a setting that enforces the requirement of initial interaction before playback on every site in all browsers.
some1else··on Facebook let Netflix see user DMs, quit streaming to keep Netflix happy
Note that everyone had access to the Inbox API at the time. We made an art project highlighting the invasiveness of such broad access:

"E-dentity is a project that asks a participant to login to its Facebook account, then takes his/ her private data from their profile and automatically prints them in an understandable booklet that is handed to the user. This booklet seeks to raise awareness of the hidden data we are sharing which we are often not aware of."

Maybe spend a couple bucks on bringing closed captions to video AMAs. I clicked the link to the embed featured in the article, and it's 20 min of unsubtitled speech.

some1else··on Cockpit mishap seen as likely cause of plunge on Latam Boeing 787
Interesting to see that the passenger in the video contradicts that explanation with his testimony of the pilot saying the instruments went blank for a few seconds.
some1else··on My favourite animation trick: exponential smoothing (2023)
You only need to smooth on approach. Something like `transition: left 200ms ease-out` in CSS should have you covered most of the time. Alternatively, you can build any kind of interpolation by replacing the `ease-out` function with the `cubic-bezier(...steps)` keyword: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/CSS/easing-func...
some1else··on Fractional scales, fonts and hinting
I agree that there's substantial qualitative difference between sub-pixel antialiased text and the plain render. The former takes advantage of greater lateral resolution and perceptual differences between the primary colors. That said, I wouldn't consider the absence of that technique jarring. I intentionally change bright-on-dark text to greyscale antialiasing[1], to counter the halation[2]. All the links to images in the thread and the Reddit post you linked are dead, so I can't see how the text rendered for you. Did you by any chance experience this on a MacBook connected to an external monitor, where you had the system set up to render type better on the built in screen[3]? Your point holds though, they don't optimize for 3rd party hardware. I was a bit quick to jump in, thinking you were referring to the difference between their flavour of sub-pixel antialiasing and Microsoft's ClearType[4].

some1else··on Fractional scales, fonts and hinting
> Apple avoids trouble and work by always using HiDPI displays. Attach a MacMini to a non-HiDPI display and you could recognize that the font rendering is awkward.

You may personally find the output awkward, but typographers will disagree. They didn't always have high density displays. They did always have superior type rendering, with output more closely matching the underlying design. Hinting was used, but they didn't clobber the shapes to fit the pixel grid like Microsoft did.

some1else··on How to (and how not to) fix color banding
Apple UI blur & vibrancy[1] look smooth without having to introduce noise. They have the advantage of owning the entire pipeline with phones & laptops, but the effect is decent even on budget external displays.

Man, I can't even begin to imagine what they're going to come up with. Titanium AIPods. Non-detachable alluminum RayBans. Google Glass, but it's a literal Black Mirror worn on your face. Self-driving Segway. Transparent plastic smart lunchbox. Electric long-board that's also a tablet. Fist-mountable selfdefense impact jackhammer. 5G base station Zurb ball. A keyboard that starts repeating nnnn when you think of what you want to type. Neuralink, but for discreetly listening to major record label IP. Contact lens payment system where you wink to tip your landlord. Quantified shelf. A car without a steering wheel, made entirely out of Corning glass. Heelies that auto-reverse when they sense an oncoming homeless person. Van-life, but it's a sentient executive jet plane. Longevity device that puts you to sleep for at least 8 hours every day. Intimacy fit-ring. Schedulable dopamine-inhibiting nanobots? This could be huge.
