solox3··on Postman: a powerful HTTP client (for Chrome) to test web services
Believe it or not, Postman was better (used to run inside a tab instead of its own window)

Edit: here it is, both the extension (tab) and the packaged app (window): https://chrome.google.com/webstore/search/postman?hl=en

solox3··on Hound: A service that comments on Ruby style violations in GitHub pull requests
Are you talking about line wrapping? Because I don't know a single person who enjoys wrapped lines of code.
solox3··on Unpythonic Python
This was what one of our Java coworkers wrote a while back: https://gist.github.com/1337/8155054
solox3··on Windows 7 outgains Windows 8 in market share again, Windows XP still above 27%
Really? You might have been lucky there, because I always maximize my windows on a 14-inch screen.

What Windows 8 doesn't give you while full screen is the task bar, which used to show the user what is behind the active program.

Users don't like not knowing what's going on.

solox3··on Why CoffeeScript Isn't the Answer

    delayed: () ->
      -> this.model  # isn't the class
Well, that isn't really fair now, is it? You could have used the fat arrow (`=>`) for binding `this` to the class.

With that in mind, I agree with the author in that CoffeeScript isn't the answer, at least not exactly. With syntax this incredibly similar, how far are we from compiling python (with generators, with statements, imports, ...) to JavaScript?

solox3··on Teen to government: Change your typeface, save millions
I've tried it long ago. Back when consumers could only afford poor-quality inkjets, the hopeless ink smearing actually worked to this font's advantage.
solox3··on Building PRISM-Proof Web Services
How's the server supposed to manage, sort, and aggregate the encrypted data? Say, SELECT * FROM Users WHERE age > 65... can't do that, age is an encrypted field.

I understand that the paper discusses the ability to search the database for a string within records encrypted using different keys (without knowing what the search term is), but it makes no mention of sorting.

solox3··on 2048 in 3D
Did you know that using only three directions drastically increases the chance of you winning, because it alters the way numbers are being stacked?
solox3··on Trolling the search engines
> Can’t believe that: No one did it before me (to my knowledge)

This has certainly been done before: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spider_trap

solox3··on Gestice – Unlock your Android by shaking it whilst wearing a Pebble
To reinvent Gestice, set up a profile that is activated by the combination of "Bluetooth Connected" and "Shake Gesture", and runs the "Secure Settings: Pattern Lock Disabled" task to wake the phone up with no lock screen. Optionally, add an exit task that restores your lock screen.

The Secure Settings is being transitioned to something they called System+ right now, so YMMV.

solox3··on What the fuck is my wearables strategy?
{Object} that {verbs} when {problem}

Unlike other projects built using the WTF Engine, this one actually produces sound ideas because the wearables sector is such an opportunity right now.

PAIR OF TRAINERS THAT CHIMES WHEN YOU BURN 100 CALORIES

WATCH THAT TREMBLES WHEN YOU LEAVE THE IRON ON

PAIR OF SHOES THAT FLASHES WHEN IT'S SUNNY OUTSIDE

solox3··on Poll HN: What is your personality type?
Yes, no, and maybe. The typical MBTI only reveals to you exactly what you had told it moments before, so it is very accurate. Test results will change, however, because you change over time.
solox3··on Quietnet: Chat client that works over near-ultrasonic sound
In case anyone else is as daft as I was, this will not work for everyone in an everybody-wears-headphones environment.
solox3··on Making Python's __init__ method magical
Interesting you mentioned CoffeeScript and syntactic sugar, because adding an equivalent "self." in python inits' parameter names doesn't work the same way in CoffeeScript.

    def __init__(self, self.x, self.y):  # fail
        pass
Did you mention this because there is an existing PEP that proposes this functionality?
solox3··on Gate Tower Building
They had at least one Jackie Chan movie there.
solox3··on The Sugar Addiction Taboo
Objectively speaking, that is unlikely a valid observation. Anyone with any dietary intolerance is more likely to read product labels, and thus more aware of what is in their food. It is not necessarily true, then, that avoiding fructose alone is making a label-conscious shopper healthier.
solox3··on Show HN: We made 1 app this year
"Add more than 100 entries per month for $3" is brilliant. People won't know they're locked into the app until halfway into the month.
solox3··on Ask HN: What's your speciality, and what's your "FizzBuzz" equivalent?
Yeah, the average applicant says something along those lines. The top applicants also mention the IE bug associated with named function expressions: http://kangax.github.io/nfe/
solox3··on Ask HN: What's your speciality, and what's your "FizzBuzz" equivalent?
It's one of those questions that provoke the most thought, allow granular benchmarking of the interviewee's knowledge, and have a valid answer, in my opinion.

That is to say, this question has worked for us as a dev house, maybe not so much if you're hiring contractors, I can't say for sure.

solox3··on Ask HN: What's your speciality, and what's your "FizzBuzz" equivalent?
Working for a web company. Our favourite JS question is,

"What happens if you do this?"

    var func = function func () {
        // blah
    };
solox3··on 92 Facebook Apps Have Access To My Account
They're just links to the network sites' permission pages.
solox3··on Panopticlick – How Unique, and Trackable, Is Your Browser?
I don't think the majority of those who track you (e.g. retargeting advertisers) would need to track you for more than a month, that is, unless you are setting up your system or tweaking your IDE, it is very unlikely that you will change your set of fonts within that time.

Also, they aren't particularly picky about keeping you, the trackee, forever uniquely-identifiable.

Consider this: when was the last time you (the non-average) or your grandmother (the average) installed a font?

solox3··on FDA: Antibacterial soaps could pose health risks
Arm and Hammer's baking soda toothpaste is also known to contain triclosan. The ones they sell where I live, at least.
solox3··on FDA: Antibacterial soaps could pose health risks
Triclosan is not only found in antibacterial soaps. It is also found in Colgate's regular and whitening toothpaste (this might be specific to Canada), where it comes into contact with your gastrointestinal tract.
solox3··on Gmail blows up e-mail marketing by caching all images on Google servers
Do you know more about this? Are they, say, MD5ing images that are served, or can this be circumvented by changing a pixel for each request?
solox3··on Newly discovered greenhouse gas '7,000 times more powerful than CO2'
Semi-offtopic: water vapour is by far the most powerful atmospheric greenhouse gas per unit volume and as a whole, many times more 'powerful' than CO2. Hardly anyone mentions it because it is not something we can change.

solox3··on Show HN: Bitroad – Sell anything online for Bitcoin
Oh. The file that you upload is the thing you are selling.
solox3··on Show HN: Bitroad – Sell anything online for Bitcoin
I am selling "This Image", the file they told me to upload, but never shows up. http://bitroad.io/listings/32
solox3··on Show HN: We built Triage, an iOS app that unites all your dev tools
Please give us either one of these:

* An Android app

* A mobile web app

* Some more screenshots... just so we can see what we're losing out on for not having an iOS device.

solox3··on How The Post covered the ‘grand social experiment’ of the Internet in 1988
We are not that far technologically from being one collective sentient being, if we were all wired to the Internet using one of those chip implants. By then, think up a question and you will know it, spot a robbery and others will see it. If our society accepts the moral implications of assisted thinking, it can easily become the next mass media.
