soligern··on Chandrayaan-3 Soft-landing [video]
There are some very interesting, and arguably more challenging missions coming up including a Venus orbiter, manned space flight and a Martian lander. This should really help solidify the manufacturing space around this.
soligern··on First ever remains of a dicraeosaurid sauropod unearthed in India
Before the Toba explosion India was not populated by Homo sapiens. The Levallois technique was found post Toba so the tools are definitely not the same.

It’s going to be very hard to brain drain a country of 1.4 billion people. That doesn’t even take into account the massive amount of money the diaspora sends back. The above is usually an argument people make when they don’t want to let immigrants into their country.
soligern··on First ever remains of a dicraeosaurid sauropod unearthed in India
There is so much archaeological and paleontologic work that remains to be done in India. All the research and digs are still in a very nascent stage and I’m excited for the day when the country has more resources to dedicate to these things just like the last 5-10 years in China, which have uncovered fantastic things.
soligern··on Chronic Pain: Finding Relief with the Benefits of Cannabis
I’ve quit for more than 5 years now and in that time I’ve smoked two times in total. At this point, with no tolerance, one bowl is enough to completely blow someone away. It’s no where close to a single drink of alcohol. A couple of shreds, maybe 1/8th of a bowl was enough to get me very high.
soligern··on MRI scanning could lead to major cut in prostate cancer deaths, UK study
I don’t even want to hear about possibilities anymore. I just want things made public when it’s here already or available for use right now.
soligern··on NY Times Rides in Waymo Robotaxis in SF
What a dream that would be for myself as well. Electric too so I can charge it up at night and then essentially get free travel during the day even if it only 100-300 miles a day.
soligern··on Don't fire your illustrator
AI generated art may be disposable but it certainly is very, very good. Midjourney makes plenty of impeccable art and photorealistic images that have no flaws. Also, even if there are flaws a week with some YouTube videos can teach anyone how to fix them, you don’t need someone with five years of deep experience.
soligern··on Don't fire your illustrator
A human looking at someone’s artwork is “training a model”. It’s bullshit and anti progressive to say someone or something that is creating derivative works is stealing.
soligern··on Changing its name tanked X's downloads in App Store and Play Store
What a load of crap. People become “gay” in jail because they have no choice. A lot of people in heavily conservative societies where they aren’t allowed to easily come in contact with women are “gay”. It’s not genetically defined.
soligern··on Critical hearing looms in battle over California’s last nuclear power plant
How is solar and wind energy rapidly increasing “grim”?
soligern··on Conferences are inadvertently excluding many attendees from foreign countries
It’s trivial as an Indian to get a tourist visa to Europe. I really doubt this is a valid scheme since it’s harder to do than the regular way.
soligern··on Changing its name tanked X's downloads in App Store and Play Store
Assigning a term to the way someone dresses and cuts their hair doesn’t change anything beyond the individual level.
soligern··on Changing its name tanked X's downloads in App Store and Play Store
Sure you can but it’s pointless if the party isn’t aligned that way and you’ll never see your views implemented in legislation.
soligern··on Changing its name tanked X's downloads in App Store and Play Store
Then you’re a woman that is dressing and acting like a man. It’s a personal choice and no one should have any problem with it. But claiming you are now a man makes no sense.
soligern··on Changing its name tanked X's downloads in App Store and Play Store
I’m pretty sure Musk was a much more stable person back then. The thing that completely made him hate the left and lose his mind was one of his kids becoming trans. It really is annoying there isn’t any true centrism and if you have to align with the left you have to buy into this trans ideology or your only other option is the logic defying insanity that is the right.
soligern··on Shouldn't distant objects appear magnified?
What am I looking for?
soligern··on CRISPR gene-editing treatment eliminates HIV-like virus from non-human primates
Technically the virus should be able to reach all the cells, irrespective of whether they’re latent or not I would think but I’m just a lay person.
soligern··on W. H. Auden’s 1954 review of The Fellowship of the Ring
Well what are the two major gripes?
soligern··on CRISPR gene-editing treatment eliminates HIV-like virus from non-human primates
If I’m not mistaken, EBT-101 human trials for HIV are under way as of last month. Hope this works out the same for humans.
soligern··on First hurricane to hit California in 84 years
Why would it change it forever, Death Valley gets torrential rains and flash floods a few times a year already.
soligern··on Federal Judge Upholds Finding That AI-Created Art Isn’t Copyrightable
Well yeah, the prompts are written by a human and the output is not deterministic. I don’t understand what your point is.
soligern··on Federal Judge Upholds Finding That AI-Created Art Isn’t Copyrightable
This all is based on the honor system and there is little honor now when millions of dollars are on the line.
soligern··on Why do old books smell so good?
My dad lost his sense of smell during a surgery and he says he doesn’t miss it in the slightest. Makes no difference in how good food tastes or anything else he encounters in life. In the modern world, it really is a “nice to have” sense.
soligern··on Worldcoin ignored initial order to stop iris scans in Kenya, records show
At one point in the 70s, the Indian government started offering people money to voluntarily get sterilized. These people didn’t have a free choice in the matter, their situation in life compelled them, in this particular case financially. It’s not an infringement of someone’s freedom, rather an exploitation of the poor situation that individual is already in.
soligern··on Worldcoin ignored initial order to stop iris scans in Kenya, records show
Uber is fantastic, much better than some street taxi you have to find and hail. AirBnB is the only way I can realistically find multi room houses to stay in on vacations, hotels don’t offer that and there aren’t resorts everywhere. Not sure what you’re referring to with the imaginary restaurant and unregulated television.
soligern··on Microplastics detected in the marine air from Norway to the high Arctic
Except you could find an alternative for asbestos. I don’t think anyone could come up with a replacement for plastic that is… not plastic like.

Ideally someone would make “plastic” that biodegrades over 10 years into completely harmless substances.

soligern··on An underwater landslide knocked out two critical submarine cables serving Africa
I don’t think the people running the show in Niger have the capability or know how to pull off an underwater cable shear that looks like a landslide. I bet even most developed countries wouldn’t be able to do it flawlessly.
soligern··on Job Corps: free, residential training and education for low-income young adults
>in society’s eyes

That’s all that really matters for many people.

soligern··on Job Corps: free, residential training and education for low-income young adults
He tried to.
