soligern··on USA Today Owner Pauses AI Articles After Butchering Sports Coverage
We’re not at a point where this can be a human free pipeline, but I bet you could make this work with 1-2 humans in the pipeline that review instead of the 100 you would traditionally need.
soligern··on The FBI Has Collected DNA Profiles for 21M People
You get what you want.
soligern··on The FBI Has Collected DNA Profiles for 21M People
Nothing you would have to abide by if you’re not part of the local community.
soligern··on The FBI Has Collected DNA Profiles for 21M People
That hits hard. Atleast they can’t reasonably base insurance premiums on the gene set of your third cousin, not for most health conditions anyway.
soligern··on Alexandria: A minimalistic cross-platform eBook reader
The ebook reader on calibre is literally a frame with almost no border. There is nothing to discuss regarding UI/UX. There is nothing extraneous. You can’t even see the frame if you go full screen.
soligern··on 200k users abandon Netflix after crackdown backfires
Name one new Netflix show with a male lead you can actually look up to.
soligern··on FBI, partners dismantle Qakbot infrastructure
Why? Windows is not inherently less secure than MacOS or Linux.
soligern··on Alexandria: A minimalistic cross-platform eBook reader
I don’t see how an ebook reader can look “dated”. It’s literally displaying your text, with your chosen font in a frame.
soligern··on 200k users abandon Netflix after crackdown backfires
Just take a look at the new content, this isn’t a recommendation problem. This is a problem with the show greenlighters all being women for the most part over the last couple of years. Even international films are only allowed on the platform if they toe a certain line.
soligern··on 200k users abandon Netflix after crackdown backfires
I’m probably going to get downvoted for this but Netflix is geared towards women. Everything is a female protagonist, the males in their shows are effeminate and there is next to no nudity that isn’t accompanied by some sort of feminist screed. It’s unwatchable.
soligern··on Walt Disney Pictures VFX Workers Move to Unionize
Then how can Starbucks, Chipotle etc. blatantly shut down stores in response to unionization?
soligern··on Can a worker-owned restaurant work?
How do you fire people? Do you just get voted off the island? There would need to be managers.
soligern··on Scientists are working to bring the woolly mammoth back
Do they explicitly say they’re only looking to match protein coding regions? I would imagine attempting the entire genome as much as possible.
soligern··on 111,111.1 meters is reliably 1 degree of latitude
I regularly need to divide to build bookshelves out of 4x8 plywood sheets.
soligern··on 111,111.1 meters is reliably 1 degree of latitude
But say you have to divide a 8 3/8” board into 5 parts. That turns into an ugly 771/40. What do you even do with that using an imperial measuring tape?
soligern··on Federal study links testicular cancer to ‘forever chemicals’
There is a reservoir so it is instant on. The flow is reasonable, you can fill a glass of water in 5-7 seconds. I have to replace the membranes every 6 months. Waste water disposal is hidden so I’m not sure how much gets discarded. Flexible tubing seems to be used.
soligern··on Federal study links testicular cancer to ‘forever chemicals’
I use reverse osmosis well water, all stainless steel cooking utensils, buy my meat from a farm and only buy fresh veggies. I only drink out of glass and use glass containers for storage. That’s about as much as I can handle and I think that covers all major sources.
soligern··on 111,111.1 meters is reliably 1 degree of latitude
Easier to type into any general purpose calculator. It’s also so much more accurate when trying to enter into any CAD/CAM software.

It’s also easier to add up 10 different decimal numbers than the same number of mixed numbers.

soligern··on 111,111.1 meters is reliably 1 degree of latitude
What good is a mile to begin with. Just use kms and then we have a nice round figure. Being from the US and as someone that does a lot of woodworking, I’m very used to inches but I can’t do anything beyond basic calculations in inches and always have to pull out a very specific carpenters calculator. It’s not trivial to add up 2’13/32” + 5’11/16”, there’s too much carrying over and doubling to equalize the denominators to do easily in your head. That’s just addition, dividing is a whole other beast.
soligern··on Show HN: Going into freshman year, figured I should build an interpreter
It depends. When I was young I could spend hours coding and it felt amazing and like a great use of my time. Now in my 30s? No way, writing detailed code and spending all my time in front of the screen feels like I’m throwing away my life. All that minutia, whether useful or useless, is repulsive.
soligern··on Scientists are working to bring the woolly mammoth back
It’s honestly not that hard to get the gene set you’re looking for in a single cell. It’s may take tens of thousands of attempts for it to be exactly what they’re looking for but it’s possible with current technology.
soligern··on Scientists are working to bring the woolly mammoth back
It’s literally in the article. In an African elephant.
soligern··on UK's infrastructure is too expensive: Railways, Trams, and Roads all cost more
Boomer immigrants bring their old world practices with them. A handful of isolated incidents indicative of a practice on its way out. Modi the current PM of India is from a low caste. The president of India is from a low caste.
soligern··on Ancient culture torched its own homes every 60 years
It seems almost impossible to get and keep a wall at 1000 C for several hours using primitive technology.

The only way I can imagine is building a clay/mud oven around the entire wall and then having people pump massive bellows for an entire day.

soligern··on Ukraine uses Australian drones made of cardboard
Yes, but without the US I doubt Western Europe can hold back the tide.
soligern··on Ukraine uses Australian drones made of cardboard
Yeah but where are the Ukrainians going to get the electronic components? I’m sure some pieces of cardboard are not the limiting factor here.
soligern··on UK's infrastructure is too expensive: Railways, Trams, and Roads all cost more
The disappearing system that can’t maintain itself in cities because no one knows anyone’s origin?
soligern··on UK's infrastructure is too expensive: Railways, Trams, and Roads all cost more
The Indian government explicitly refuses foreign aid. The money the UK sends is to NGOs. It’s also a pittance.
soligern··on Ancient culture torched its own homes every 60 years
I have to say, the pictures on that article and others online aren’t particularly convincing.

I wonder if you could pull this off in the modern world. It would be amazing to see sheer walls of granite, completely fused together as one solid mass.

soligern··on For many home-schoolers, parents are no longer doing the teaching
Definitely not advocating for bullying, just pointing out that you can’t harken back to antiquity and call homeschooling a continuation of that paradigm in this particular sense.
