solarmist··on The teenager who lives like it's the 1940s
It's not about the fedora, it's about the stereotype that caused that association to mean something.
solarmist··on The teenager who lives like it's the 1940s
I took it as a speculation, if that comment is true, then ...
solarmist··on The teenager who lives like it's the 1940s
Well, I went through this and didn't even see it as abuse/neglect until I was 35 and trying to figure out why I couldn't form relationships with others.
solarmist··on The teenager who lives like it's the 1940s
As someone that was parentified by my father. Yeah, I can totally see that.
solarmist··on The teenager who lives like it's the 1940s
On the other hand if he goes into history or restoring vintage things then he could make name for himself by helping others to be able to appreciate vintage things.
solarmist··on The teenager who lives like it's the 1940s
If he restores it, it probably will be.

> He says he has friends of all ages, although he admits he shares more in common with people much older than him.

The only thing I'd worry about is him getting too obsessed to the point he has trouble relating with others that are from this generation or are younger than himself especially as the number of people familiar with that generation continue to pass away.

solarmist··on HP fails to derail claims that it bricks scanners on printers when ink runs low
It's expensive, but like $295 to replace all the color toners (high capacity), not $1200 or $300 each.
solarmist··on HP fails to derail claims that it bricks scanners on printers when ink runs low
Agreed. I have an HP Color LaserJet Pro and the toner is expensive, but lasts forever if I don't print and the quality is fantastic as well. Plus, they have automatic duplexing which is a must have feature for me.

Newish ones like mine even support AirPrint and NFC printing.

solarmist··on Language was born in the hands (2022)
That is similar to my beliefs about the origin of language too.
solarmist··on Users report iPhone 15 is overheating
Indexing is a bitch for battery and heat, even on macOS.
solarmist··on The Philips Hue ecosystem is collapsing
Neat, but that's only one piece. Plus, I LIKE HomeKit.
solarmist··on The Philips Hue ecosystem is collapsing
It’s having color changing lightbulbs that was the feature for me.

Most basic is shifting from 5000k white to 3500k white in the evening. Color scenes are nice too.

solarmist··on The Philips Hue ecosystem is collapsing
Doesn’t Apple require that HomeKit devices can be operated without company specific apps? Specifically to avoid this kind of situation.

Is there any effect if you aren’t using the Hue app? Or reason not to drop it (the hue app) for HomeKit?

I don’t think anyone has any clue what works yet. But they keep trying things.
solarmist··on Apple iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max
Security updates will continue, just not iOS 17.
solarmist··on Apple iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max
I disagree. Apple is the only site that gives realistic numbers rather than theoretical maxes.

Independent benchmarks are good, but Apple keeps everything very focused on what an average person buying it would experience, even benchmarks.

solarmist··on America’s surprising partisan divide on life expectancy
Did you read the article? He goes back and talks about the founding cultures of these regions. The partisan nature of it is also a consequence of that rather than politics causing the divides.

The author brings up racial divides several times and show variance graphs based on several races, but is obviously not comprehensively in this short article.

solarmist··on America’s surprising partisan divide on life expectancy
Not surprising as a whole, but really interesting subregions.

Especially the Far West (not to be confused with the Left Coast)

“Far West (pop. 28.7 million) Extreme environment stopped eastern cultures in their path, so settlement largely controlled by distant corporations or federal government via deployment of railroads, dams, irrigation and mines; exploited as an internal colony, with lasting resentments.”

solarmist··on The worst programmer I know
And usually it isn’t the manager, even if they want to be. They’re managers because they’re good at projecting to their boss’s wants and needs.

solarmist··on For Women with Money Issues, an A.D.H.D. Diagnosis Can Be Revelatory
I get it all the time, but don’t have a vpn only pi-hole.
solarmist··on Unconditional cash transfers reduce homelessness
Believe it or not people don’t actually like being a burden. People like feeling like their lives and actions are worth something.
solarmist··on For Women with Money Issues, an A.D.H.D. Diagnosis Can Be Revelatory
Anyone know what causes that?
solarmist··on ELI5: Why are 11 and 12 called eleven and twelve and not oneteen and twoteen?
I didn't know about the renaming and Jan/Feb. That makes sense.

What about the other month names? February, March, April, May, June? Did they get renamed as well?

I assume January is from Janus.

solarmist··on ELI5: Why are 11 and 12 called eleven and twelve and not oneteen and twoteen?
Blame the Romans for that. July and August were added into the middle. Specifically Julius and Augustus.
solarmist··on Anxious brains redirect emotion regulation
Good quote none the less and from what I know of Mark Twain, he wouldn’t have minded being attributed that.
