soft_dev_person··on Wallabag: a self-hostable application for saving web pages
It's the Wordpress model. Host wallabag.org yourself, or pay for the hosted service wallabag.it.
soft_dev_person··on Ask HN: Passive income ideas for solo developers?
OT, but could the [dupe] tag become a link to the duplicate topic or something? It's usually in a comment somewhere, but would be nice with the official explaination/cause somewhere consistent.
soft_dev_person··on Ask HN: I don't want to be a founder anymore
To retain some faith in humanity I will read this as sarcasm.
soft_dev_person··on Ask HN: What's your working day like?
Wow, I've never realized I may have filter bubbled myself to believe that all devs hate open offices. Not sure I want to believe that either, though. Too depressing.
soft_dev_person··on Three words that changed me
git blame should be renamed to git why
soft_dev_person··on Dodging S3 Downtime with Nginx and HAProxy
For an increased risk of going down when everybody else is up. Is that still success? And at what other costs?

It all comes down to risk vs. cost vs. gain.

soft_dev_person··on State.of.dev – Explore the current state of development
A fun little site. But how is Sublime in "Release"?
soft_dev_person··on Expanding Fact Checking at Google
Yes, it was clear when I wrote that... Label itself will still be misinterpreted.
soft_dev_person··on Expanding Fact Checking at Google
That's interesting. Not sure it will be interpreted that way by most people, considering how many are interpreting the announcement itself. Even after reading it again and the one announcing the "fact-check" tag, it was still not obvious what they meant until I read your comments in here.

Anyway, the part regarding Facebook still stands, and we are moving in that general direction I believe.

soft_dev_person··on Expanding Fact Checking at Google
Then they are not fixing the right problem.
soft_dev_person··on Expanding Fact Checking at Google
How will a system like this handle unpredictable developments reported by new or few sources?

And how will a system like this handle news or reports about events that challenge our world view?

Not everything takes the form of Trump saying random outrageous stuff that is easily verified/rejected.

Also, you may say that "Fact checked" is just an additional data point to judge whether to trust an information source, but you know as well as I do that lazy people (most people) will start thinking that "Fact checked" means truth and "Not fact checked" means lies. Even more so on Facebook.

I think, in the long run, these systems will be detrimental to peoples' ability to judge any information themselves. This is a problem for democracy.

soft_dev_person··on What could happen if you refuse to unlock your phone at the US border?
Yeah, I pretty much decided to never travel to the US again the first time I heard you may be compelled to unlock your Facebook profile for the customs.

Not because I have something particular to hide, but as a gay person in a hostile world I have learned to care about my privacy.

Not a huge loss for me, not a huge loss for the US, but it accumulates.

soft_dev_person··on George Orwell’s 1984 is currently the top selling book on Amazon
Your point may be valid, but I think the current (up until very recently, anyway) situation is just as bad.
soft_dev_person··on George Orwell’s 1984 is currently the top selling book on Amazon
Yes, it's very interesting to see them apply even more of the same logic that failed miserably last year. Also in other countries with the same tendencies, they still don't seem to get that crying about how terribly racist and fascist these people are doesn't actually reach the intended audience.

Maybe we can blame echo chambers for this...

soft_dev_person··on George Orwell’s 1984 is currently the top selling book on Amazon
The cynical among us have been saying that nothing presented by the White house (and any other government institutions) can be trusted at face value for years. I guess now is the time where everyone becomes a cynic.

But is that such a bad thing?

They say access journalism is dead, but access journalism is just repeating stuff said by people with power. Making them accountable is a good thing.

Trump may have unintentionally restored investigative journalism...

soft_dev_person··on A Git catastrophe cleaned up
I read that, but it doesn't read like he is aware of the option to revert a commit directly. More that he would remove them manually and commit that.

Little difference, but if "as clean as possible" was the goal, I think that would be the cleanest.

[edit] added the little words that my keyboard seems to filter out.

soft_dev_person··on A Git catastrophe cleaned up
Why not just revert the offending commit? It would be a valid blip in history as mistake made and corrected.
soft_dev_person··on Building Jarvis
They used the art-part of that in the movie Anti-Trust. Fun =)
soft_dev_person··on Cancelable Promises: Why was this proposal withdrawn?
But that doesn't actually cancel the request, and thusly the data is downloaded anyway? Or am I missing something?
soft_dev_person··on Things You Notice When You Quit the News
True, but by using "external fact checkers" they are more or less reverting to the old system. Similar, anyway.
soft_dev_person··on The second operating system hiding in every mobile phone (2013)
Note that plenty of the security holes are actually required by major carriers to be present. Just sayin'.

Also, for trust to be thrown out the window, a lot of changes would probably need to happen both in baseband software and in the networks themselves. Not seeing that happening anytime soon.

soft_dev_person··on New NIST password guidelines: don't require character types or rotation
I tend to do manual "diceware"-passphrase generation when I need to (i.e. I cannot use my password manager for any reason).

So just random words and half-words are appended, like: 'misfortune behold oratory plexum'

Then again, these things tend to just stick very well in my mind, so it may not be appropriate for everyone. Also, I only need to do this on certain services, so it's not that many to remember.

The hard part is when they then reply with "requires at least one upper case character, number, symbol, etc.". A certain XKCD comic comes to mind...

soft_dev_person··on Things You Notice When You Quit the News
> And _apparently_ for some people any action taken to correct yellow journalism is decried as censorship.

No, but automatic removal of fake news is censorship, since all of us in here should know that determining truth by algorithms is really an unsolvable problem in _very many important cases_.

It could/would probably be reduced to a source credibility score, but credibility is subjective.

soft_dev_person··on Ask HN: What was your best passive income in 2016?
I made some silly fan designs on CafePress many years ago. Haven't really touched it since then, but it still generates $50 per year. Provisions have been going down. though.

That being said, it's mostly 2 designs out of ~35 that sells anything at all.

I'm sure there's some potential in there, but it's kind of hit and miss.

soft_dev_person··on Ask HN: What was your best passive income in 2016?
Clever.

Friendly correction: peace of mind, not piece of mind =)

soft_dev_person··on Ask HN: What was your best passive income in 2016?
That's nifty and cute. How do you go about promoting and building traffic for this kind of site?
soft_dev_person··on Let your kids lose: Success inhibits preschoolers’ selective trust
Imgur allowed but Science Daily is blocked. I'd like to know the rationale behind that one =)
soft_dev_person··on How to Ship Side Projects
I'm struggling with finding a problem I have myself that isn't already solved a thousand times. As a software developer it's not so easy, as software developers tend to solve their own problems very quickly =)

My hobbies so far haven't translated neatly into side projects, but I guess I just need to get more creative.

soft_dev_person··on Android security in 2016 is a mess
When I worked in the mobile industry (modems), blatant security holes to monitor all sorts of things was a requirement from the biggest operators (like AT&T).
soft_dev_person··on Donald Trump is the president-elect of the U.S.
Even if our Norwegian right wing is pretty much more to the left than your left wing, our left wing behaves in exactly the same way here.

Their last campaign was pretty much "if you choose them, the world will end", instead of trying to present their own policies and how they would improve things.

And they're still completely arrogant about it. It seems they will repeat their strategy the next time, but then they are in opposition, which is an easier game to play. Also, they try to blame the entire economic slowdown on the current government, even though the oil price fall is unprecedented (and Norwegian industry is seriously oil driven)...

Sigh, I'm so tired of politics. It's all about blame and ideology instead of stuff that actually matters to people.
