soanvig··on Programming is Art
AI actually can take away desire to code. If what you do becomes cheap for the masses, you lose your motivation bit by bit. Also you were surrounded by art, now you are surrounded by crap. It does not kill your passion fully but drains you slowly.
soanvig··on Rhombus 1.1 is now available
Actually, staticly typed languages are easier for both humans and machines; however dynamically typed languages are harder for humans and probably neutral for LLMs. LLM should be able to infer usage (hence "typing") because it can put the entire codebase in its context, while humans cannot.
soanvig··on Deno Desktop
For me it's not stable. After they change their renderer from one to another it freezes for me from time to time. But on the other hand I'm running Nvidia on Wayland so I feel no hate towards Zed owners - and restart is super quick ;)
soanvig··on I Stored a Website in a Favicon
Honestly it didn't interest me, but I do remember from back in the days full websites rendered by a browser from... Empty files. https://mathiasbynens.be/notes/css-without-html
soanvig··on Show HN: Continue? Y/N: A 60-second game about AI agent permission fatigue
Fun game. Can somebody run an agent against those questions to see how it performs? :)
soanvig··on California moves to exempt Linux from its age-verification law after backlash
Wow, stupid idea is hard to legislate. Nobody could predict that.

It reminds me of clients wanting some stupid feature from app developers which does not fit into anything, and makes no business sense, and therefore creates only problems.

soanvig··on How to carry more than your own bodyweight (2025)
Reminds me of slovakian mountain carriers https://regiontatry.sk/en/mountain-load-bearers/
soanvig··on I miss thinking hard
you forget about fake sleeping being loaded with fake dopamine hits before sleep AND broken sleep schedules; and eating fake ultraprocessed food instead of wholefoods.
soanvig··on I miss thinking hard
That's weird as I do the opposite: think by myself, then look for help if I don't know.
soanvig··on Defeating a 40-year-old copy protection dongle
I want to read the rest of the migration story
soanvig··on Coding is when we're least productive
Oh, that must be fun to be hired by the client directly... I wish each my programming job was not an ivory tower :(
soanvig··on Grid: Free, local-first, browser-based 3D printing/CNC/laser slicer
> much longer than the lifespan of websites

But browsers (and browser technologies) have documented track of being fully backward compatible up to the beginnings of WWW, and it's not going to change.

Which actually is much much better than any other environment you can imagine - unless of course you use (and want to use) that one frozen in time 25 year old PC. And pray nothing breaks (y2k bugs and whatnot).

If the software is open source (and works offline) you can have it functional in 10 or 20 more years. And it will be "locally-installed software you own" you want.

soanvig··on Grid: Free, local-first, browser-based 3D printing/CNC/laser slicer
But you have to get the software somehow? Once you get it, it works offline. The same here I guess: once you download the source code/binaries into browser's cache (that can store things indefinitely) it's offline.
soanvig··on The Value of Things
Wonderful comment.
soanvig··on Is the RAM shortage killing small VPS hosts?
Graphic cards prices normalized quite quickly after crypto boom. Before going nuts for AI training of course.
soanvig··on Making Google Sans Flex
Too bad Pixel support for factory-broken screens sucks so my "well designed" Pixel has green vertical line in the middle of the screen. So detrimental to my sense of aesthetics.
soanvig··on Programmers and software developers lost the plot on naming their tools
Sometimes "branded" names are a good thing.

For example, naming some application modules strictly after what they do is super tedious, and uses words that are already reserved, therefore creating ambiguous nomenclature. Maybe I have various sort of permissions in my system but naming that particular permission system some greek god name creates a clear and shared meaning across the team (both business and technical), and mind you that that's what communication is all about - a shared meaning. Nothing else.

P.S. (I'm deliberately not going into discussion about bad things with that approach)

soanvig··on Dollar-stores overcharge customers while promising low prices
I think because it's 10% income before cost deduction
soanvig··on Dollar-stores overcharge customers while promising low prices
> Dollar General’s lawyers argued that “it is virtually impossible for a retailer to match shelf pricing and scanned pricing 100% of the time for all items. Perfection in this regard is neither plausible nor expected under the law.”

Can you explain to me how USA is called civilized? How somebody can say things like that, and how a shop is even allowed to have an error margin

soanvig··on Stop Calling It Vibe Coding
Very Inefficient But Entertaining coding
soanvig··on Tsdown – The Elegant Bundler for Libraries
What's the point of bundling libraries? Bundling applications, ok, but libraries? Unless they are dynamically imported straight into browser, then it doesn't matter for any use case I can figure.
soanvig··on Sophist
It's enough though if you study fallacy of argumentation. It should cover all sophist techniques.
soanvig··on consumed.today
Dude eats pretzels every day. Must be a huge fun.
soanvig··on This map is not upside down
Print regular map in a design you like and hang it upside down. It's literally that. Or if you want to be strict you can use "flip" function in image editing tool. You can compensate me for saving your money
soanvig··on In Defense of C++
Coming from a different ground (TypeScript) I agree, in a sense that there is a line where apparent convenience because a trouble. JS ecosystem is known for its hype for build tools. Long term all of them become a problem due to trying to be more convenient, leading to more and more abstractions and hidden behaviors, which turns into a mess impossible to debug or solve when user diverges from author's happy path. Thus I promote using only the necessities, and gluing them together by yourself. Even if something doesn't work, at least it can be tracked down and solved.
soanvig··on The buyer-pull and seller-push theories of sales
Haha it's just all the sales people I met were exactly kind of people I hate, which made me hate sales entirely. There is something special about them: fake smile, gestures etc even in simple face2face conversations
soanvig··on The buyer-pull and seller-push theories of sales
Unfortunately my company needs sales, because other companies have sales. That's a nuclear weapon situation. Sales gives a leverage, pushes company ahead of competition. So the competition have to have sales as well.

I find this situation toxic, but that's just sad truth of the world.

soanvig··on The buyer-pull and seller-push theories of sales
I hate sales people.

This blogpost describes sales strategy as obvious as it is annoying, just like described seller-push. Written in a fashion of trying to sell me something.

Just stop manipulating for a second, ok? But I guess the profession would not exist then.

soanvig··on An adventure in writing compatible systems
I wonder why it took so much time among entire team to actually look into the source code. That's probably third thing I would do after encountering that kind of issue. I would even look for a word "gigabyte" considering it is well documented, because bizarre things should be documented.
soanvig··on Delete tests
I think this discussion has to be open with what is a "unit" in unit tests. "Integration" consists of many units working together. But my unit can be a function or entire module. That's what people ignore in most discussions about test types.
