snug··on Launch HN: Charge Running (YC W21) – Social running app with real-time coaching
These workout subscription cost seem insane to me. Why are these apps costing the price of a gym, with none of the access to equipment. I know it's the price of a drop in class or two, but given that these apps/coaches could do many x more people in one group should drive prices much lower imo.

edit: to be honest though, it does sound like a fun app and good idea. Especially after I've gotten back into running this new year, after being out for the last 2 years from an injury I got during a half marathon, and had a hard time getting back into running. I do want to give it a try, but i have trust issues with free trials if I have to put my card in.

snug··on Brave is launching its own search engine with the help of ex-Cliqz devs and tech
Some how Google + Chrome is bad

But Brave + Cliqz is good?

I thought the whole argument was a browser shouldn't be owned by the same company that runs a search engine, or for-profit organization

snug··on Giving Ada a Chance
Thought this was talking about blockchain tech, Cardano (Token $ADA) which I'm having a hard time giving a chance. Was hoping something could change my mind
snug··on How prepared are we for the next giant solar flare?
I think these might be based on two different sorties. The show on Apple TV is fictional/alt history
snug··on Launch HN: Insight (YC W19) – an iOS browser with easy-to-make extensions
Sure thing, since im only a week into iOS, i'm changing my default to insight, will give more feedback as i use it!
snug··on Launch HN: Insight (YC W19) – an iOS browser with easy-to-make extensions
I just moved over to iOS from android, trying to use chrome mostly because of sync. I see that's already been requested, but my biggest gripe right now are tab management. Why does chrome have such a bad tab manager, it's much better on android. I like your way of doing this, but why not mimic the way safari does tabs, it's much easier to close tabs, especially after I noticed on iOS where every new search opens up a new tab, and persists. On andorid, if I did a search there was no tab once I searched something else
snug··on How prepared are we for the next giant solar flare?
Exactly! Apple TV+ is a sleeping giant. So hooked on Servant. Ted Lasso is one of the best Sitcoms (if that's what this is called) in a long time.

Also don't forget about "See", which I laughed at, at first, but it's actually really good. Defending Jacob, Palmer (movie), and The Morning Show (which I still need to start)

snug··on How prepared are we for the next giant solar flare?
There is a show on Apple TV+ called "For all mankind," (without spoiling) the latest season has a solar flare event, wonder if this is what prompted this article.

Anyways, it's a really great show and recommend anyone watch it if they are interested in the space race to the moon.

snug··on Bitcoin surpasses $50K as major companies jump into crypto
Bitcoin was the first and is still the most famous cryptocurrency. So good news for any cryptocurrency is good news for bitcoin. Most people at this point know that btc exist, they probably don't know what eth is.

Bitcoin as collateral. Given many people got extremely rich off of bitcoin, they can use bitcoin as collateral for altcoins.

Wrapped bitcoin. Bitcoin can be wrapped in a ERC-20 ETH token backed be an actual bitcoin, similar to stablecoins (USDT, USDC, etc.) and traded using smart contracts

I think the responses here are missing the point in your questions.

> do these infotainment systems actually produce tangible, relevant and unquestionable benefits?

Yes for many people, but not you.

The driver and passenger can change music, podcast, directions without needing to look at the phone, nor asking the driver (phone owner) to unlock their phone.

A passenger can also plug in their phone without needing to figure out the bluetooth dance, and it just works, play their spotify, or podcast, or any number of things.

It's also right there on the dash, you don't need a car mount to mount your phone on the dash, or window to get the directions, change a playlist, or podcast. It works on the dashboard and if you have steering wheel controls, they usually work there too.

snug··on How bad is your Spotify?
I wish it only looked at my last year, or two. It seems to look at all of my music from the beginning of my account, which is about 10 years old, when I listed to a lot of shitty rave music. Not saying my score would have been better.
snug··on Dear Google: Search Competition should be 1 Click Away so why 15+ on Android?
Was able to just do this in 3 steps

1. Use the Google Search widget and type DuckDuckGo, there's a suggestion for "DuckDuckGo App"

2. First result is the DDG Privacy Browser App, with a button to "install"

3. Opens up Play and you have to select "install" again, IMO this is a good security feature to not auto install

snug··on Dear Google: Search Competition should be 1 Click Away so why 15+ on Android?
They are trying to download the DDG Privacy Browser. I just did it in 3.

1. Use the search widget and type duckduckgo app 2. First thing that pops up is Google Play link to install app, click install 3. Takes you to google play, and click install

You don't get a sign-on bonus every year either. Agreed, I'd say at most you're getting $250k/year in equity, no way L6 is getting $3.2M in equity over 4 years
snug··on Google, the Stupidity Amplifier (2016)
Sushi grade fish must be flash frozen to kill any bacteria, worms, etc. in order to be served frozen. Most fresh (killed, butchered and served quickly) food isn't really great, either taste wise or health wise. Especially if it's not fully cooked.

Most red meats sit out for a bit, either wet or dry aged, which enhances the flavors. Fish will need to be frozen or cooked to a safe temperature.

snug··on Ask HN: What are blockchains being used for in 2020
> For example, stock trading or bank transfer records in clearing houses.

Yeah, IM looking for other examples, this has been kinda going on from the very beginning.

> I think someone is working on blockchain to have a transparent and immutable record of public documents, like laws and regulations.

This is the kind of stuff I'm looking for, but where are the real world examples?

I brought up Orchid, which seems interesting, any maybe promising at first, but the hype has died down. It's also not user friendly, as in I need both ETH for the smartcontract to work and OXT (Orchid Cryptocurrency) for the bandwidth I want to use.

I do think that blockchains can be useful, and will be useful, but it still seems like it's a solution looking for a problem, and maybe it's creating more problems first (i.e. need for smartcontracts, oracles, etc.)

snug··on San Francisco apartment rent prices are dropping fast
Yeah, that's what I'm seeing, however, I've seen a dip in housing pricing drop near east bay BART stations, especially West Oakland and Temescal/McArthur Area
snug··on San Francisco apartment rent prices are dropping fast
I've been casually looking on zillow. I have not seen rent go down in my neighborhood (NoPa)
snug··on Cloudflare removed wildcard SSL in all plans except Enterprise
Yup, worked at Cloudflare 6 years ago and that was never supported, and will likely never be supported. You cannot "Orange cloud" a wildcard DNS record
snug··on My family saw a police car hit a kid, then I learned how NYPD impunity works
> The boys were driven to our local precinct, the 76th. I eventually made my way there, too. The families of all the boys were there. The police are required to notify families when a minor is arrested. But the families told me that hadn’t happened. They’d learned about the boys’ arrests from friends. (The police later said the families showed up so quickly they didn’t have time to make notifications.)

Wow this is really scary to read. There's a miniseries on Netflix I would urge everyone to watch "When they see us" about "The Central Park 5" kids that were coerced into confessing they raped a white woman in the park. They were interrogated for hours and promised to go home if they confessed.

snug··on California sets Covid-19 daily record, Bay Area cumulative total passes 20k
Exactly this, in fact we did such a good job, that people who were sick for other reasons didn't seek medical help and health care professionals have been laid off

snug··on IBM no longer offers general purpose facial recognition or analysis software
Lots of white people also look the same, I grew up in a mostly Mexican environment, living in the Bay Area now, I find it difficult to recognize lots of white people apart from each other.

I'd say it's an ignorant thing to say in the way you say it. Like you said in this post, you just don't know the features to look out for when you're not familiar with them

snug··on New 13-inch MacBook Pro
I haven't had a Dell in awhile, 4+ years, but I have to say, the Macs that I've had felt just as sturdy as the day I bought it. My personal MBP I got is from early 2017, and my new MBP I got for work less than a year ago feel exactly the same, besides one having stickers I wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

Every dell I've had starts creaking at the hinges after just a few uses. Doesn't feel as sturdy, the $600 difference is worth the longevity and integrity of the macbook hardware alone.
