snr··on Auth.js is now part of Better Auth
Cockroach
snr··on Disney+ streaming uses draconian DRM
This is a naive question but I've always wondered, what motivates people who distribute pirated content for free?

I get why someone would consume pirated content but why would someone take the risk of publishing pirated content? Is it the ad traffic that the publishers get?

snr··on Netflix CEO may have missed the real reason why US subscriber numbers plunged
This.
snr··on US tells India it is mulling caps on H1Bs to deter data rules
Huh. Why did they not include communication (Gmail) data?
snr··on Catheter navigates autonomously inside hearts in preclinical tests
Yeh. But trust me, it'll be ready to be on market in 3 months.
snr··on India orders anti-trust probe of Google for alleged Android abuse
Make it "punishable by up to 5% of global turnover over last three years" (kinda similar to GDPR) and stand back and see how quickly Google (I'm looking at you too Facebook, and Amazon) will change their shit show. India is at a position of strength wrt Google, Amazon, and Fb to easily force them to play nice. Now if only they realized it.
snr··on High-Deductible Health Policies Linked to Delayed Diagnosis and Treatment
A little off track rant but the tax and health policies of USA are super freaking unbelievable. Why on Earth can one not be eligible for a HSA when they don't have a HDHP? The healthcare is screwed up. The least you could let people do is use their pre tax monies for the health treatments.

And don't even get me started on FSA and forfeiture. That's MY money. What the hell do you mean the amount is forfitted?

Apologies for my language. The policies are making me go crazy.

snr··on Paul Graham inspired the creation of Redis
Can be easily done by printing out the stdin to stdout in the first place?
snr··on Launch HN: Point (YC W19) – First Debit Card with Points
I'm really asking out of ignorance here: What's wrong with credit cards other than the fact that they don't bill my account immediately (which might actually be an advantage sometimes?)
snr··on Our Boss Will Call Your Boss
Oh yeah. Sorry, confused the title with War Dogs.

Definitely one of my favorites! (Both movies are)

snr··on Launch HN: Point (YC W19) – First Debit Card with Points
I bank with SoFi. 2.25% APY on a checking (like) account. $1.5M FDIC insured (not that I care/need it). Access to practically ALL ATMs. Beautiful app.

I use Uber Visa Credit Card, which is free, which auto pays itself from my SoFi, with helluva lot benefits: 4x dining, 3x travel.

Why should I use Point?

snr··on Our Boss Will Call Your Boss
Which one?
snr··on Facebook Still Tracks People on Yelp, Duolingo, Indeed
But then again, unless you're setting up your own VPN infra, I don't trust anyone with my data.

If you've set up your own infra, deets please!

snr··on The World's Greatest Art Thief
Reminds me of "White Collar" (TV series). It was probably based on this true story. I wonder if they really burned art.
snr··on JP Morgan rolls out first US bank-backed cryptocurrency to transform paymentsd
I mean, sure why the hell not. You could write/buy/subscribe to a strongly consistent distributed cloud kv store system to do the same more efficiently, but knock yourself out.
snr··on India Proposes Chinese-Style Internet Censorship
On one hand, I disapprove of this with the fear of India becoming all watching and dissent suppressing like China. On the other hand, India has a real national security need to know everything that goes on, thanks to its neighbor(s?).

On a parallel note of "foreign" technology companies, I believe we will see data sovereignty being a fundamental right/resource of nations (like natural resources) as a means to fairly redistribute internet technology generated wealth.

snr··on Twitter Still Can't Keep Up with Its Flood of Junk Accounts, Study Finds
The authors conveniently forget to mention the false positive rate with their approach.
snr··on Microsoft Bing not only shows child pornography, it suggests it
Is there a reason they don't run child exploitation detection ML engine (PhotoDNA) on the media they index? I'd guess they already run an ML engine to "describe" a image while they index it and this additional step shouldn't be too expensive?
snr··on Chinese may take over Mombasa port: Ouko
I agree my comment doesn't justify my 'speculation'. I apologise and acknowledge that I could have done a better job.

I intended to add a word of caution to the original comment, while completely acknowledging that I may be totally wrong. New account, redirection of the topic while not addressing the specific points of criticism, in conflict with other investigative journalist reports. Here's why I put on a tin foil hat: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/monkey-cage/wp/2016/05/1...

FWIW, I'm appreciative of quite a number of 'bold' policies of the Chinese government dared to experiment with and implement. It's just that undisclosed affiliations bother me.

snr··on Quora pays thousands for posting questions
This. I reported a "famous" author multiple times for violating a bunch of rules and I was retaliated against and my write/update 'privileges' suspended. Well, flunk you too, Quora.

Not to mention, the abundance of dirt quality content and insincere questions (and answers)

snr··on Facebook is reportedly planning its own stablecoin
Meh. If a single organization is controlling the block chain, they might as well make it a surprise surprise relational database.
snr··on Indian government to intercept, monitor, and decrypt citizens’ computers
This.
snr··on Windows Sandbox
Umm, that's how economics work?
snr··on 1980s Amiga has been running the AC and heat in 19 schools for 30 years
Wouldn't Windows 10 IoT on a raspberry pi hooked up to the internet work as an efficient replacement instead of the $2M? AFAIK, Windows claims to handle all the security things for you so a student developer making this project doesn't have to.
snr··on Ask HN: Best alternative to Gmail?
MSFT doesn't read your email to target you with ads.
snr··on Google Suppresses Memo Revealing Plans to Closely Track Search Users in China
Yep that's what I ended up eventually downloading. Edge on Win 10 is not bad actually.
snr··on Google Suppresses Memo Revealing Plans to Closely Track Search Users in China

"The problem, with companies (and with mafia, etc) starts once you take the money."

So true!

snr··on Google Suppresses Memo Revealing Plans to Closely Track Search Users in China
>"The new version of Chrome signs you into the browser even if you don't want to sign into the software itself"

Damn. I just realized that. Signing out of browser signs you out of GMail. And signing into GMail signs you into the browser. Went to download Edge but turns out it's not on Win Server. MSFT really needs to get its act together.

snr··on EU approves internet copyright law, including ‘link tax’ and ‘upload filter’
Am I wrong in seeing merit in the argument for blocking people/entities from re-posting copyrighted content and simultaneously holding the platforms accountable? Of course, they should exempt businesses valued below a fair figure like $50M so as to not bother startups with compliance expenses.
