snisarenko··on Ask HN: Alternatives to Reddit
VC funding is primary reason that reddit reached the current situation. Another VC funded alternative will follow the same death spiral.

Link aggregators/social networks cannot generate VC expected returns without dying in the process.

This death cycle of social networks has repeated itself in silicon valley for decades.

At this point doing VC investment into social networks is like a game of hot potato. Who gets to exit first before the social network self destructs

snisarenko··on Show HN: Shareable maps with data encoded in the URL
This is pretty cool! Nice tool.
snisarenko··on Ask HN: Good resource on writing web app with plain JavaScript/HTML/CSS?
Hey man,

I am working on framework to quickly build simple web apps/ui. http://WidgetTerminal.com

Would love to talk to you about your use case. Contact info in my profile.

snisarenko··on Show HN: Valideate – validate your ideas before spending more time and money
Interesting idea. But not sure how much you can rely on results for B2B ideas (might be good for consumer facing apps/services)

>> P.S. Registering is frictionless, just need username and password, email is optional, no email validation required. Please try it out!

Hard disagree. This is a high friction registration. A password field for a non-essential website is like an instant conversion drop off. Just ask for an email, and send login link to email. That's it.

snisarenko··on Ask HN: What small library or tool do you want that doesn’t exist?
Disk usage history.

Like the du command, except it shows the size of directories over time. Doesn't have to be precise, daily historical snapshots of directory sizes isfine.

When your disk is almost full, you want to know which directory grew the most recently, not which directory takes up the most space

snisarenko··on Ask HN: In 2022 how do you develop a simple CRUD app if you have few time?
I am working on something that can satisfy your needs

Subscribe for early access, and i can give you a demo.

Also, have contact info in my HN profile.

snisarenko··on Ask HN: How do you visualize calendar time?
Oh forgot to mention. It only works if you have custom view that's set to show 3 weeks :(

Someone needs to make a chrome extension to shift Google Cal 1 week at a time. Cause the engineers at google sure aren't gonna do it :(

snisarenko··on Ask HN: How do you visualize calendar time?
Just FYI

Google Calendar web does allow you to shift your calendar view 1 week at a time (i.e. you can see 2 weeks from feb, 2 weeks for march). The UX for it is just super hidden and cumbersome.

In the top left, there is a date selector. Click it, and then select a date in the middle of the month

snisarenko··on Show HN: No-code alternative to Retool, Appsmith, Internal, etc.
I working on something like this.

My contact info is in my HN profile. Reach out if you want a demo.

snisarenko··on Ask HN: Why is everything changing too fast?
I think. This is so true. At certain point the software is done. And the only way to "improve" the software, is to just build adjacent software to enter horizontal or vertical markets.
snisarenko··on Ask HN: Best front end framework for a back end engineer?
I am working on a platform that might suit the problem you described

http://widgetterminal.com

Feel free to reach out directly to me if you want early access / demo (contact info in profile)

snisarenko··on Ask HK: Quickest way to develop mobile apps as back end engineer in 2021?
Hey I am working on a low code framework for a use-case like yours for both WebApps and Mobile Apps.

Think of it as combination of glitch.com and bubble.io / www.adalo.com

My contact info is in my HN Profile. I would like to learn more about your use-case.

snisarenko··on Ask HN: Tools you have made for yourself?
emailmynotes.com (the backend is down right now, working on moving to cheaper hosting)

Send yourself notes from an untrusted computer, without entering passwords.

snisarenko··on Ask HN: Who's looking for a co-founder?
This looks like something I wanted to build. Great idea.

Currently using YouTube music, and its pretty good, except for one annoying bug that drives me crazy.

snisarenko··on Ask HN: Who's looking for a co-founder?
sent you a DM.

snisarenko··on Ask HN: Where are all the crypto companies?
Blockchain solves 1 problem, and 1 problem ONLY

It allows any individual to own PURELY DIGITAL floating point numbers in a "distributed spreadsheet", and to issue a command to transfer a part or all of the that number to another "person", and NO ONE can reverse that command (and NO ONE except you can change the floating point numbers that you own). The system that prevents the reversal has a caveat. There MUST be a liquid market for the floating point numbers (i.e. you should be able to exchange it for currency).

But that creates a paradox. Why would anyone buy numbers in some "distributed spreadsheet"? Well the ONE and ONLY reason to buy them is if you can use those numbers themselves as currency.

Lets summarize. block-chain can only work if somebody buys the numbers for real money. People would only buy the numbers if they are a useful currency (and non-reversibility is a useful property for a currency, so some people determine it valuable and buy it).

That's it. That's block-chain in a nutshell.

Anything that exists in physical world is absolutely pointless to "put on the block-chain".

there is one more small use-case that's a side effect of block-chain existing. You can prove that a piece of digital information existed at some point in the past.

edit: Also forgot to mention. The other MUST have requirement for block-chain to work is there must be a physical resource that is difficult to monopolize, easy to obtain, and easy to prove that you have it. (CPU power is so far the only resource that exists that has those properties).

snisarenko··on Ask HN: What's the worst piece of software you use everyday?
I wish I could force the Workday CEO to fill out expense reports 8 hours a day using his own software.

I bet the software would improve pretty quick.

snisarenko··on Ask HN: What's the worst piece of software you use everyday?
I agree git is not user friendly. But there are 2 solutions, that are pretty low friction

1. There are great cheatsheets online that you can just print out and keep on your desk.

2. Write a user friendly cli wrapper on top of git (i think there might already some projects out there)

snisarenko··on The War on Upstart Fiber Internet Providers
Hey. I looked up redlining, but I am not sure how it relates to bidding.

Could you explain your point in a bit more detail. I am kinda curious.

snisarenko··on Verizon suspends advertising on Facebook, joins growing boycott
I built a pixelfed aggregator if you want to discover accounts to follow

https://pixelfed.club

snisarenko··on The War on Upstart Fiber Internet Providers
It would be same as the regular bidding process.

Except that the gov't picks and pays for the contract (construction), instead of the local residents.

For service and maintenance contract the gov't would subsidize the monthly fees (which are expected to bee higher than a high density city)

snisarenko··on The War on Upstart Fiber Internet Providers
That's a good point. The law can have an exception for communities that get less than 5 bids. If that happens the gov't builds the infrastructure.
snisarenko··on The War on Upstart Fiber Internet Providers
I think the government involvement should be minimal. They should create a law that requires bidding on local infrastructure, and enforce that the bidding process is fair, and the selection/voting process is fair.
snisarenko··on The War on Upstart Fiber Internet Providers
The writer forgot to mention the most important barrier - Basic economics.

Last mile infrastructure is always a winner takes all market.

Even if all the barriers to entry are removed, you won't have 20 different providers competing in a single city. Only 1 or 2 providers will survive. This is because operational costs for running your own lines will be constant, but you will always have only a fraction of the customers if you are competing with 20 other providers.

I've commented on this topic in a previous HN thread. But I believe the solution to the problem is a bidding system. Companies bid to build infrastructure. And companies bid to maintain it for short period of time (3 years).

snisarenko··on Show HN: r/hnblogs, Blogging is not Dead
They are. I created these for several reasons.

- Reduce friction for unregistered users to see content.

- The instance you use, only aggregates from specific instances of their choosing. You might miss content from other instances.

- Work on custom curation / discovery features in the future.

snisarenko··on Show HN: r/hnblogs, Blogging is not Dead
Yep, I agree with this idea. Aggregators and directories should be separate services from the actual blogs, content. If you don't like the censorship/curation on one aggregator, you can go to a different one.

I started working a little bit on this idea, by creating simple aggregators for mastodon and pixelfed (still thinking about how to improve the discovery/curation aspect)

https://pixelfed.club

snisarenko··on Why Is This Website Port Scanning Me?
I built a simple aggregator to give people a preview of mastodon

snisarenko··on Facebook and the Silent Bob Effect (2019)
I am actually kind of interested in the problem of surfacing, high signal content on fediverse.

Currently I built a few simple aggregators:

https://pixelfed.club

https://mastodonia.club

But I am thinking of adding features to filter and surface, high signal/quality content.
