snicky··on Ask HN: What skills are you hiring for but can't find qualified applicants for?
The usual work: planning and developing new features, addressing bugs, dealing with tech debt, setting up infra, code reviews, writing documentation, etc.
snicky··on Ask HN: What skills are you hiring for but can't find qualified applicants for?
In our case that's simply not true. The person I mentioned in the original post was the best paid developer in the company with a very competitive rate.
snicky··on Ask HN: What skills are you hiring for but can't find qualified applicants for?
> If I had to guess; did the project grow organically for a few years where the original developer learned all of the skills as they went and now this person left?

Well, sort of. He was experienced before he joined, but staying with us many years definitely helped him to structure everything correctly and automatize a lot of tasks. What's interesting, he actually worked only 3 days a week. It's doable if you clearly define the responsibilities.

snicky··on Ask HN: What skills are you hiring for but can't find qualified applicants for?
We are looking for a developer experienced in securing our whole stack: Rails backend, Vue frontend and infra on AWS.

This kind of person isn't easy to find, because:

- she has to have extensive knowledge about these frameworks

- feel very confident configuring servers

- follow the latest exploits

- perform security reviews

- audit dependencies

and:

- still be able to address vulnerabilities writing elegant code.

I guess it's a lot to ask for, but we had a team mate in the past who did exactly this.

snicky··on Ask HN: What is your favorite piece of software?
Redis

snicky··on Ask HN: How to maximize net income in EU?
If maximizing the current income is your goal you should consider contracting over FTE. As for the optimal ways - every country has its set of "vehicles" to minimize taxes which usually boil down to establishing LLC type company that pays low CIT instead of high PIT and making use of the capital earned by that company. The question is how deep down that rabbit hole you wanna go and how much time to spend on that. Very often it's not worth the effort and your brain cycles may be better spent for learning new skills or trying to find a higher paying job :)

Edit: typo

snicky··on Ask HN: What's the Opposite of an NFT?
Excuse my ignorance, but on what basis it is an actual ownership of a digital asset and what is actually the asset? From what I understand NFT is a blockchain record that contains a URL. This URL may point to different resources at different times, no?

snicky··on Ask HN: How many days do you take off to recover from burnout?
What is a solid definition of a burnout? Asking, because as a teenager and in my early twenties I was quite sensitive / "self-reflective" and always expected that spending dull days working for other people will kill me mentally, but in the end it never happend. I'm in IT for 10 years already and changed jobs a couple of times, usually when some processes in companies where pissing me off, but I don't think this is what you're talking about.
snicky··on MacBook Pro 14-inch and MacBook Pro 16-inch
Yeah and it interferes with wifi (on MBP 13" from 2019).

snicky··on More Casio Watch Mods
Recently, I bought another watch that fits your description + it's absolutely gorgeously looking - Casio Oceanus T200. It's a dress watch with a mesmerizing dial and a beautiful case with some superb polishing that is done in the same factory where they produce cases for Grand Seiko. As an additional gimmick you also get Bluetooth - the watch can connect with your phone every night and seemlessly adjust the time, so it's basically always spot on. They sell it in Japan for around 400$.

snicky··on Ask HN: Where can I live off 1k USD per month?
People are helpful in general and will try to talk with you, but their English will most likely be on a poor level. It's much easier to get around if you know at least a little Mandarin.

Also, it's a total opposite of "some place quiet" :) All the major Taiwanese cities are very densely populated, busy and loud.

snicky··on Ask HN: How do you weigh off life satisfaction against income?
How do you like the tech scene in there?

I've tried to move to Brisbane around 5 years ago and even had an episode working remotely for a company located in there which wanted to sponsor me, but ultimately the compensation vs COL ratio seemed very bad, even if you compare it to Europe, so I didn't pull the trigger.

At that time there were really only a few interesting jobs in web development (I specialize in Ruby on Rails). Is it better now?

snicky··on Ask HN: Any experiences with Freelance Visa programs across the world?
No personal experience, but Taiwan Gold Card seems to be easy to get if you earn over 5000$ per month: https://goldcard.nat.gov.tw/en
snicky··on Ask HN: How has Airbnb changed the housing market where you live? Tourism?
Downtowns of all big cities in Europe are filled with Airbnbs and that causes problems for both the neighbours (often old people) and the new buyers who are priced out. I think I wouldn't have much against people renting out their space privately, but most of these businesses aren't ran differently from hotels. They keep dozens of apartments, have their own room service, handymen and whatnot. Apparently, it turned out that clients prefer this over "unique experiences" that come down to sharing houses with hosts which btw gets old very quickly if you travel for an extended period of time. Also, a big chunk of tourists' money goes straight to Airbnb which doesn't pay taxes locally. I would actually be surprised if they pay taxes anywhere.
snicky··on What's the weirdest/best thing you've done?
Definitely not the best, but probably the most stupid ... Once as teenagers we rode our bikes with a friend to a forest park in our town and decided to have a bottle of wine in there. We drank one, it wasn't enough, so we got another one. Turned out the "wine" had 20% abv and we got quite wasted. I blacked out and regained consciousness in the middle of the forest with my bike, next to a long fence that was 2-3m high with a barbed wire on top. I didn't know were to go and got angry, so I hanged the bike on the fence, climbed it, scratched my whole arms on the wire, jumped down, picked the bike and started riding further. Turned out it was a military base, so I rode around and finally found the gate guarded by a soldier. I told him to open it, but he kept asking how I got in. I kept mumbling that I just threw the bike in and he finally let me go. Later on, still completely drunk, I rode a couple of kms through the city to McDonald's to get a burger. But I lost all my money. So I mumbled my way again and they finally gave me one for free. Then I went home.

Next day it turned out my friend woke up in a graveyard on the other side of town. We never found out how he got there :)

Don't drink and ride.

snicky··on Do you really need Redis? How to get away with just PostgreSQL
That + the best documentation in the industry. It is a joy to work with.
snicky··on 5 years of leetcode with no progress. I'm giving up
This thread looks too much like some ads on Facebook where a brand's PR person replies to every single comment to keep the post busy.
snicky··on Can I do a degree without prerequisites if I am wealthy?
If you don't need a degree or credits then why to do BSc at all? Just pick some courses you like on Coursera or other MOOCs. And it won't be 5x price, more like 5%.
snicky··on Ask HN: Relocating from London to Silicon Valley for a higher salary at 35?
In Poland software engineers are able to pay 5% linear income tax if they can proove they do R&D and sell copyrights to their code. The rules seem to be quite loose in this regard and thus lots of developers qualify for the discount.

snicky··on Stop the “Hard Work” Obsession
The author kinda lost me when he claimed the social mobility in USA is "shockingly low" pointing to the article showing it's just 13 percent points behind Norway. That is not a shocking difference.

snicky··on Bias in radiology resident selection against the obese and unattractive?
Sorry, but I still don't understand your point. How am I priviliged if people from a foreign country colonized another part of the world? I and my ancestors didn't have anything to do with this. Our country was, in fact, "colonized" for more than a hundred years too.

All the minority groups you just mentioned are also Caucasian, so they are priviliged, but at the same time they... are not? In your original post you made a racial claim that just didn't make much sense to me at all, same as all race-related stereotypes that try to somehow classify groups of billions.

snicky··on Bias in radiology resident selection against the obese and unattractive?
Not sure about America, but I don't understand what do you mean by saying that being white anywhere in the world comes with priviliges. I am a white male from a Eastern European country where 99.9% of people are the same race. How am I priviliged and in comparison to who?
