snicker7··on GitHub Copilot available for JetBrains and Neovim
Well. Code should be optimized first for correctness, and simple string concatenation will not work for URL params.
snicker7··on Why Turtl switched from Common Lisp to JavaScript (2019)
> however when things did go wrong, there was nobody to run ideas by and nobody to really help me…I had built all these things myself, and I also had to be responsible for fixing them when they broke.

You are responsible for your supply chain. I’ve had instances at work where some rando open source library would be bugged, and we’d have to patch it up ourselves. It is much easier to fix code you’ve wrote.

snicker7··on My ideal Rust workflow
People confuse strong typing with static typing all the time. I guess this was the case here.
snicker7··on I deleted data from production
Possible explanation: lots of terminals paste on click. A single miss click can execute who know what from your clipboard.
snicker7··on Hertz orders 100k Teslas
My understanding is that rental car companies car about car depreciation (it is one of their main costs). The Tesla makes a good choice.
snicker7··on Can we trust Microsoft with open source?
You are describing the web developer today.
snicker7··on Magit, the magical Git interface (2017)
Evil mode supports leader keys. It’s pretty trivial to setup.
snicker7··on Western Maryland asks West Virginia to 'consider adding us' to their state
DC statehood is all about tipping the scale to the Democrats in the Senate. Retrocession of DC doesn’t allow that.
snicker7··on Composability in Julia: Implementing Deep Equilibrium Models via Neural ODEs
Simulink -- probably the most popular modeling toolbox.
snicker7··on Python stands to lose its GIL, and gain a lot of speed
> That means removing the GIL would all of a sudden break a lot of code

So par for the course for the PSF?

snicker7··on Missouri Governor Vows to Prosecute St. Louis Post-Dispatch for Reporting
Apparently, the SSNs were all embedded directly in the HTML file. Like … what?
snicker7··on Call of Duty Adds Kernel Level Driver for Anti-Cheat
Things like this is why I increasingly game on consoles.
snicker7··on Why I built my own static site generator
I definitely advocate for writing your own static generator. For me, my personal web page is my sanctum. Maintaining it is a labor of love.
snicker7··on Digging into Julia's Package System
One thing of note that there is a great selection of Julia packages in GNU Guix. This makes Julia an excellent choice if you want a truly reproducible project.
snicker7··on Janet – a Lisp-like functional, imperative programming language
I mean, this is done well outside programming languages. See; for example, tropical hurricanes.
snicker7··on Relational databases aren’t dinosaurs, they’re sharks
A database being relational is (mostly) orthogonal to it being ACID. ACID is generally a property of the underlying storage engine (a key-value store, generally).
snicker7··on The impact of digital media on children’s intelligence
"At baseline, time watching and socializing were negatively correlated with intelligence, while gaming had no correlation. After two years, gaming positively impacted intelligence, but socializing had no effect."
snicker7··on The Concept of “Cultural Appropriation”
tl;dr Cultural appropriation implies an ownership of art and tradition, and is akin to intellectual property. Stallman is skeptical of the validity of IP, and hence also the concept of cultural appropriation.
snicker7··on Abstractdifferentiation.jl: Backend-Agnostic Differentiable Programming in Julia
Generic interfaces in Julia always confuses me. Julia has no (standardized) traits or interface semantics. Instead, there seems to be a tacit agreement on which methods must be implemented, optionally be implemented, and shouldn't be implemented by the user. Even worse, Julia packages that implement generic interfaces are often under-documented (AbstractDifferentiation.jl being no exception).
snicker7··on California outlawed all-white-male boardrooms – reshaping corporate America
I mean, the law is unconstitutional. Racial quotas are not legal. And this will get struck down by courts. Democrats literally just don't care.
snicker7··on Submarine cable map rendered onto a globe
I mean, it’s far worse for Africa given their geographic size and population.
snicker7··on TSA’s “See cash, seize cash” policy
As mentioned in the tweets, the bipartisan FAIR act is supposed to reform civil asset forfeiture.
snicker7··on Leaked Apple Training Videos Show How It Undermines Third-Party Repair
“Video” is a stretch. There was like one frame a second.
snicker7··on Updating Views in Julia's Dataframes.jl
Views are a really nice feature in Julia. In Python's pandas library, it can be really difficult to determine if one DataFrame references another or is an independent copy. Julia makes this more obvious.
snicker7··on 6th Generation Stealth Fighter: Joint Effort by UK, Japan, Italy and Sweden?
The last 70 or so years have been the most peaceful in human history. How? The American military and economic hegemony. If you want peace, build more aircraft carriers.
snicker7··on Ask HN: Vetted homeschooling resources for kids (5-10) to learn coding?
Structure and Interpretations of Computer Programs
snicker7··on Gitlab S-1
The big issue we have with GitLab is the pricing. Ultimate is literally five (!!!) times more than premium. And there are only a couple of features that we want from ultimate.
snicker7··on Ubuntu to Make Firefox Snap Default in 21.10
It is, as far as I know, the only cross-distro package format that is designed to be cross-platform (desktop, server, IoT) and with built-in sandboxing. Moreover, it is feasible to base a distro off of snap alone (Ubuntu Core, designed for IoT).

Flatpak has sandboxing, but is only designed for desktop apps. Not server and not IoT.

Nix / Guix / AppImage does not have built-in application-level sandboxing out of the box.

snicker7··on Lawmakers Ask Zuck to Drop 'Instagram for Kids' Since App Made Kids Suicidal
Suicide rates for children are onthe rise. There is a clear and obvious solution: repeal section 230. It is time big social media face the consequences of their destructive rent seeking of our collective minds space.
snicker7··on Erase your darlings: immutable infrastructure for mutable systems
It’s worse than that. “Installing a package” is not meaningful without a reference to its version. Nix/Guix are supposed to give you byte-indentical systems.
