snehk··on Just Stop Oil soups two more van Goghs hours after sentencing of earlier souping
And if all their demands were met today - or let's say the UK ceases to exist today and doesn't emit anything anymore - how would that impact climate change?

Last time I checked the methods of measuring temperature via satellites was not percise enough to even account for that scenario. It's like stealing ten people's drinking water so that you can put out a big forest fire. Knowing it will not at all impact the forest fire but it will sure as hell make the ten people angry. And then celebrating yourself for doing something. It's beyond stupid.

They're almost as bad as the ones in Germany who glued themselves to the streets and then couldn't show up to court because they flew to Bali. These people are seriously something.

snehk··on No X in Brazil? No problem, Brazilians say
> What I'm really surprised about is how X is still operating in the US or here in Europe.

Me too, which is crazy. I remember when news outlets in Europe were complaining about how Russia forbids websites where people could talk freely, complained about arrests over social media posts. That was maybe a decade ago. Hearing "bad fake news hate speech bad" over and over again somehow does something, I guess. You start to seriously question why something that allows people to share text and pictures is not banned.

snehk··on Iranian writer is sentenced to 12 years after tweeting a dot at supreme leader
Add Germany to that list. A girl was sentenced to actual jail for insulting a rapist who was spared jail. Absolute madness.
snehk··on Carbon capture and storage is a fantasy
> when we actually reach zero emissions

Where does this mindset come from that this is necessary? There's no data to back this up.

snehk··on Dear AI Companies, instead of scraping OpenStreetMap, how about a $10k donation?
You can literally set up your own OpenStreetMap instance in ten minutes. It's a simple 'docker run'-command. Sure, indexing will take a bit but even that can't take that long given their resources. That's just ridiculously greedy.
snehk··on Deutsche Bahn struggles to shake off 'travel hell' reputation
> DB is better than it's reputation.

What's good about it exactly? They're not reliable, they're overpriced compared to any other form of transportation, you need to reserve a seat even if you pay for first class and the internet sucks. I find it hard to see anything good about them.

snehk··on 40 out of 60 German climate greening endavours fraudulent
> We still have a great standard of lifing.

Which has gone down in the last 10 years. There's absolutely no indication that anything in this regard will improve. All metrics show a downwards trend. Be it homeownership, financial security or even life expectancy. So it's basically just like saying "I inherited billions and I'm still not completely broke. My financial decisions must be awesome".

snehk··on Canada's extremist attack on free speech
> And if they're scared, they've been given reason to be scared.

We've just had elections in the EU and you won't believe how many people are scared of migrants. Now everyone can just say they're afraid of being victims of a hate crime committed by said migrants. What an amazing idea. /s

snehk··on Working with Excel Files in Python
I'm so happy that, when working with .xlsx files, I usually only need the results. That's why I always convert them (put them in a DB) and then do all the work there and export the results.

I read that Pandas works well, too, but I haven't really tried it.

snehk··on I built an online PDF management platform using open-source software
> the ambiguous ‘Contact Us’ is a huge turn off

Same. About three years ago we introduced a company wide policy to not buy anything where the price is not known. So, so much time (money) being wasted on figuring out the actual costs, the offering would have to be really inexpensive to make up for this. And if that were the case, the price would be right there.

snehk··on Europe gives TikTok 24 hours to explain 'addictive and toxic' new app
TikTok has a rating of 12+ on the app stor in EU.
snehk··on Switzerland faces landmark climate-human rights ruling
That's like telling someone it was wrong of them to not do CPR after they've found a rotting corpse without a head. Switzerland has so little impact on the global climate, it's laughable and nothing Switzerland could do would change anything whatsoever.

Is there even a technology available that could show the impact on climate change were Switzerland's CO2 magically zero tomorrow?

snehk··on Seattle shuts down gifted program for having too many white and Asian students
It's on their website. https://www.seattleschools.org/departments/advanced-learning...
snehk··on Seattle shuts down gifted program for having too many white and Asian students
Is it gonna be the good racism™ where it's against asians and whites?
snehk··on Smoking cannabis is now legal in Germany
> Legal? Maybe not - but here in reality you have little recourse.

The recourse would be to simply not move out. Even if it's in the contract, illegal parts of the contract are void.

snehk··on Smoking cannabis is now legal in Germany
When I was in Uni, we tested air quality at bus stops (where most people complain about smoke smell) and then a few meters away. Turned out that most of the pollution came not from cigarette smoke but from cars, tires and whatnot.

I also don't see how it would stay in the air longer than tabaco. That just seems your subjective thinking that's not based on anything at all.

snehk··on CIA launched covert influence operation against China
There are various US newspapers that don't show any content in the EU because they don't want to comply with EU privacy laws. These companies are free to comply with the laws and can then show their content. Same with Facebook in China.

Imagine a German bar franchise trying to open bars in the US. They cannot sell beer to 16 year olds even though that's how they operate in Germany and that's what they firmly believe in. They'll have to follow US laws and not sell to anyone younger than 21. Now the German bar franchise can say "That's against what we believe freedom to be" and not open shop there but the US is not specifically banning that company from operating in the US.

snehk··on Campus free speech was in trouble in 2018, and the data shows worsening
> I may be wrong, but from what I've seen, the majority of "prevention of other people from speaking" is done to people who are not really constructive and muddy the water.

No one on this planet (China, Russia, North Korea, for example) surpresses speech they say is constructive input. When people get jailed for online speech in Russia, for example, it's almost always classified as distributing hate speech.

In 2018, Western Media even posted about "How a Social Media Post in Russia Can Land You in Jail[...]"[1]. Times have changed, I guess.

snehk··on Staff Speak Out at Turing Institute due to four men being given top jobs
I've read the whole thing but the fact that the argument isn't "more qualified female candidates were overlooked" tells me the Institute made the correct decision.
snehk··on Joe Biden says he would sign bill banning TikTok
Neither Google nor Facebook are banned in China. They could operate there if they follow the same laws as every other company in that country.

Just like some US newspapers don't show Europeans any content because they choose to not comply with European laws. These outlets are not banned in any way.

snehk··on Joe Biden says he would sign bill banning TikTok
To clarify, those were not bans. They were decisions by companies not to follow the laws that every other company in that country has to follow as well.
snehk··on Dutch government in panic mode over keeping ASML in the country
Germany's current government is anything but right wing and it's the only large economy on this planet that's literally shrinking.
snehk··on US designates more Chinese tech companies as military collaborators
No, they're not allowed because they don't want to follow the same laws that Chinese companies have to follow. The rules are the same for Chinese companies and those from other countries.
snehk··on Apple Is Holding the Final Nail for X’s Coffin
Didn't pretty much everyone hang out with with Jeffrey Epstein as well? Or with war criminals like Bush? How can people think "oh, he hangs out with Alex Jones" is an argument?
snehk··on Apple Is Holding the Final Nail for X’s Coffin
Me too, they're coming for the socialists and I'm not a socialist so why would I care.
snehk··on Don't Fall for Big Oil's Carbon Capture Deceptions
I love how the arguments against carbon capture are the _exact_ same arguments against phasing out fossil fuels from a few decades ago.

"Oh no, it's not possible, think about how much it'll cost. It's just not efficient."

snehk··on Thieves return Android phone when they realize it's not an iPhone
> They then use this skill to force the owner of the phone to unlock it and further find the banking apps or similar to get more money from the victim.

Can you explain this part? Why would any owner cooperate with the criminals in this case?

snehk··on Poland's Most Famous Dish: Pierogi
Anecdotal, but I'm in Poland for the weekend every other week and I've never seen this.
snehk··on Earth likely briefly passed critical warming threshold on Friday and Saturday
Welp. Time for a conference we all fly to using private jets to tell the plebs how it's their doing that's destroying the planet. Maybe agree on a tax or something that screws over the little guy while having absolutely no effect on the global climate.
snehk··on Fossil Fuel Use Increasing, Not Decreasing
