snarkyturtle··on Bitcoin Fails to Produce 1 Block for over an Hour
If you're at a cash register and there's a slight chance that when you use your credit card that it won't accept a payment for an hour, wouldn't you not want to use that credit card?
snarkyturtle··on The IT Crowd US Pilot (2007) [video]
You either do single-cam and a laugh track, or a multi-cam with no laugh track. They made the poor choice of mixing the two.
snarkyturtle··on Internet Explorer 11 has retired and is officially out of support
There are two things that differentiate this from other announcements: They're disabling certain versions of IE and redirecting users to Edge [1] and the global usage of IE is far, far, lower than it was even a couple of years ago.

snarkyturtle··on Resident Evil Village in the browser through Stadia
Not a new thing. SEGA had a service that let you play games through a coax cable for instance: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sega_Channel. It loaded everything into RAM and got deleted as soon as you reset the console.
snarkyturtle··on The death of the sit-up
Abs aren't built in the gym, they're made in the kitchen.
snarkyturtle··on The Twitter Ranking Algorithm
Yep, it's gonna just be like when they "open-sourced" their image cropping algorithm and it's just that they provided the model and didn't specify their training data. Granted, yes, you can provide analysis like they did on Github [1] but you don't know _why_ it's outputting something.

snarkyturtle··on The US Tried Permanent Daylight Saving Time in the ’70s. People Hated It
This is the case as it is in Australia, they have five timezones. https://www.timeanddate.com/time/australia/time-zones-backgr...

I don't know exactly how that fares with scheduling and whatnot but it's been implemented.

snarkyturtle··on How CNN's Jeff Zucker and His Cronies Manipulated the News
It's almost like every media company is competing against each other like any other business who would've thought
snarkyturtle··on macOS’s ancient problems still exist in 2022
The Rectangle app has been a great window tiling system for me: https://github.com/rxhanson/Rectangle
snarkyturtle··on Show HN: I made an app to help replace Taylor Swift songs on Spotify
Is being well-connected a bad thing? I don't get it. Surely I'd trust people with lots of great connections over someone who doesn't — it shows that they're great at soft skills, networking and being a decent human being.
snarkyturtle··on Wordle officially has been moved to nytimes.com
A thread on Twitter that I can't find confirmed that when they implemented the redirect, they took the stats in localstorage on the co.uk. domain, encoded it into json and passed it through a query param where the new site just parsed it and stored it in localstorage.
snarkyturtle··on NFT marketplace shuts, citing 'rampant' fakes, plagiarism problem
But by taking money in exchange for a transaction that persists on a blockchain that separates OpenSea from, say, Pirate Bay. It was free to create an account and upload a torrent file and then the sharing occurred off-platform. But since OpenSea operates in the same way as any web 2.0 platform — providing an API that interacts with the thing that does the hosting/sharing — it's more liable to things like copywrite infringement.
snarkyturtle··on Google Slides Is Hilarious
Yep, all the warts are totally forgotten the moment you have to use Powerpoint or Keynote again and have to coordinate with changes with multiple people.
snarkyturtle··on Ask HN: How do you track your billable working hours?
Wakatime
snarkyturtle··on How is efficacy vs. severe disease strong if 60% of hospitalized are vaccinated?
Someone didn't read the article, his overall point is that vaccines work:

"However, while these numbers are true, to quote them as evidence for low vaccine efficacy is wrong and misleading."

snarkyturtle··on The Bullshit
Dude needs an editor. If mainstream news is bullshit, at least it's readable bullshit.
snarkyturtle··on A martian’s review of The Martian (2015)
At the same time, you could tell that he deliberately didn't include those moments in The Martian because he's not comfortable writing from that standpoint. In Project Hail Mary, those moments seem shoehorned in and the voice turns back into being aloof and impassionate in the next sentence. Even the end of the book presented two options and he took the less emotional one.
snarkyturtle··on Nobody designs for small iPhone devices anymore
Icons with labels are best practice for accessibility.
snarkyturtle··on Notre-Dame cathedral: Firefighters tackle blaze in Paris
The melting point of marble is 800ºC and if reports are true that it's a construction mistake and not something more drastic it stands a good chance of not collapsing.
snarkyturtle··on 2019 Stack Overflow Developer Survey Results
The main reason why Python is trending is mostly because of the data science community. Things like Pandas, NumPy, Jupyter Notebooks and Tensorflow all are built on python, mostly because of its simplicity and ease-of-use more than anything.
snarkyturtle··on U.S. workers hate ‘open’ office spaces
I'd say it encourages collaboration moreso. It's way easier to get somone's attention and get a quick clarification, although in this day and age I'd probably even Slack someone sitting next to me rather than talk.

For long discussions that's when you book a meeting room.

snarkyturtle··on Why My New Blog Isn’t on Medium – Dan Abramov
I feel like this move is like Radiohead releasing In Rainbows as "pay what you want". Abramov already has a devoted fanbase that'll probably read anything he writes, but not everyone has that kind of clout. For writers with less followers Medium would still help them get more traction and attention.
snarkyturtle··on Why can’t a bot tick the 'I'm not a robot' box?
There's an xkcd for that https://xkcd.com/1897/
snarkyturtle··on Reddit's user uprising against China because Tencent will invest in the platform
They're doing fine, their Daily Active Users is higher than Twitter even.
snarkyturtle··on Ditching the MacBook Pro for a MacBook Air
Some software is only available on OSX (like Sketch)
snarkyturtle··on Coders Automating Their Own Job
One thing that PM's do that I don't ever see a computer doing is managing clients/workers. It's the classic idiom: technology is easy, it's people that's the hard problem.
snarkyturtle··on Google tracks your movements, like it or not
They still track you with Location Services off, according to this map: https://interactives.ap.org/google-location-tracking/
snarkyturtle··on Removing jQuery from GitHub.com frontend
Because the wheels are proprietary and full of quirks. For instance, $('.foo') returns an array of jquery objects and not HTMLElements that you can act directly upon using the standard API that was made for replacing it.
snarkyturtle··on Removing jQuery from GitHub.com frontend
Well XMLHttpRequest has support going back to IE7.
snarkyturtle··on Reddit just passed Facebook as #3 most popular website in US
I haven't seen very negative coverage about the redesign, which I assume is what the "continual drama" is about.
