snapetom··on Intellectuals Are Fucking Idiots
Hah. Paul Ehrlich was my high school graduation speaker. Stanford's Professorville was districted to my high school, so I'm sure some parent were friends with him or something.

Man, what a boring, downer speech. He just talked about how my generation was screwed, and we would have world wide famines at any moment now. Great topic for a bunch of kids about to head off to college and start their lives, Paul.

snapetom··on Intellectuals Are Fucking Idiots
I was in a pretty decent econ program big public university. The program and our professors at the time had close Wall Street ties due to proximity. Despite that, no professor took themselves very seriously and many would make constant cracks about the absurdity of the field and why would anyone listen to them. It was a totally cool department of self-aware smart people.
snapetom··on Raspberry Pi blocks changing RAM chips
It absolutely is different. You just said the Mac Mini is upgradable but the Pi is still soldered on. Desoldering and soldering a new RAM unit carries huge risks no matter how skilled people claim they are at it.
snapetom··on Why I'm still bearish on LLMs after Navier-Stokes
When done right, product management is 90% idea generation and market/user research. So many companies do it poorly that PdMs are beaten to think their job is to wallow in bureaucracy and metrics.

LLMs are great at helping with aspects of market research and that’s about it. Aka it’s a good deep search engine. It’s not going to decide what features solve certain customer pain points. It’s certainly not going to prioritize and coordinate between competing stakeholders.

snapetom··on Rock band Muse lose social media handles to Meta’s new AI tool
Good lord. Please use logic and Occam's Razor this.

Muse is a platinum album winning band that's got 10 albums over 20 years. If this was stolen, they (and their label) would be raising hell.

snapetom··on Apple reveals 'shocking evidence' from ex-employee's MacBook in OpenAI suit
Last year, I was recruiting a data scientist for a side project. I was referred to two DSes, albeit from academia, to help.

Neither had their own personal laptop. One kept his laptop in the office all the time and just used an iPad at home. The other just plain didn't have a personal one. Work was the only one she had and she had to return it when she got laid off.

snapetom··on Apple reveals 'shocking evidence' from ex-employee's MacBook in OpenAI suit
Good lord. Smart people doing the dumbest things with their work equipment.

I have a former coworker who was the VP of Finance at my company. He suddenly got fired out of the blue. The company was in the midst of trying to find a buyer (this was announced) so this was extra surprising. Turns out, he knew a lot of bad news about the company, and they caught him looking for a job. They fired him because he was too much of a liability.

How did they catch him? He was putting resumes and cover letters on OneDrive. "Yeah, in retrospect, that's one of the dumber things I've ever done," he said to me later.

snapetom··on UC Berkeley indefinitely suspends international student work authorizations
Lol. Maybe it was the environment I was in, then. I worked in a law office throughout high school. Half of the firm were Hastings who talked up the fortress that was Boalt Hall.
snapetom··on UC Berkeley indefinitely suspends international student work authorizations
Coincidentally, I just checked law school rankings in CA. In my day (mid 90's), Boalt Hall was at the very top, and most kids were told don't even bother trying for it. Now it's not in the top 15 in the nation and latest USNR has it third in CA behind Stanford and UCLA.

Stop trying to turn this site into reddit.
snapetom··on The internet is kind of a predatory cesspit now
Just a hunch, but I think Aaron Swartz would be disappointed.

(Then you bring up Aaron Swartz and Obama's DOJ on reddit and it's massive downvotes calling you a MAGA nazi blah blah blah.)

snapetom··on One corner of China’s internet is insisting that the Tang Dynasty never existed
I encourage anyone browsing through this to read that link. It gives insight on what many Westerners have no visibility into - how many Chinese view the Qing dynasty, which was romanticized by Spielberg's Last Emperor. More importantly, it's a clue on why China is fervently cracking down on this.

If you search on Google, there's a slew of Chinese restaurants in the US named "Ming Dynasty." If you were in the SF Peninsula in the 80's and 90's, the one on Embarcadero and 101 drew well known chefs from Hong Kong during its heyday. Conversely, Google knows of two "Ching" or "Qin Dynasty" restaurants in the US. Many Han Chinese have always looked down on the Ching Dynasty as illegitimate colonialists.

This particular issue is a sore point with the CCP with respect to Hong Kong. During the crackdowns in 2019, mainland propaganda justified the crackdown as de-colonization. They called the British takeover an invasion to force subjugation through mass drugging (opium).

In response to this, many protestors appealed to Han-centrism. They argued that the Ching were already an illegitimate colonizing force, and blame them for everything that led up to Western colonization. This includes everything from weakened military might to failed trade/war negotiations, to anti-opium crackdowns. If the British broke in, it's because the Manchus left the door open. And by legitimizing the Ching Dynasty, you have an indirect trail of responsibility to the CCP themselves.

This Hong Kong link is why this Tang issue is not a joke to the CCP.

Final note because I have to pre-emptively address this on social media: If you feel like you need to jump in with a generic anti-colonial comment, don't. Hongkongers' views of being British subjects, especially from 1970's on, should absolutely not be seen through Western, especially modern progressive PoV. TL;DR - the majority, often vast majority, of Hongkongers wished to remain under British rule.

snapetom··on Coding expertise is going to collapse from AI reliance
It’s commonly used in college sports where one school’s fan base argue for poaching a coach at another school. “Back up the Brinks truck” == throw money at him.
snapetom··on Grand jury declines to indict Ohio man charged with destroying Flock camera
Irrelevant and not my point at all.

The point was that OP was making a rage-bait statement. HN is supposed to be better than that.

snapetom··on Grand jury declines to indict Ohio man charged with destroying Flock camera
> He was a republican.

And Democrats were the party of slavery. Why do you bring this up? I'd think the Hackernews crowd would know history and wouldn't be surprised that on a long enough time line, philosophies change.

snapetom··on AI in drug discovery – what it is, where we stand and the path forward
Stop calling them "National Treasures." That's hero worshipping. That's just sad.
snapetom··on AI in drug discovery – what it is, where we stand and the path forward
No thanks. Social media needs less hero worship. Just RSS whoever you like.
snapetom··on Stowaway – Take the window seat on any plane or satellite overhead
Ah, interesting. Makes sense. Seems like that would be publicly available FAA data.
snapetom··on Stowaway – Take the window seat on any plane or satellite overhead
This was so much fun, thank you.

Question for you, and I guess also if you know why Airplanes.live doesn't do this - why not show the destination? I get that airplanes.live is primarily tracking and the source system, (ADS-B/MLAT?) won't show the destination airports, but would it be difficult, at least for you, to integrate a destination lookup?

snapetom··on Danish high schoolers will have to verbally defend written assignments
The best class I ever took in any school setting was Public Speaking in my first year, first semester in college just to "get it out of the way."

The teacher started off with "you're all going to look like idiots and embarrass yourselves, and you'll have to get over it. Best you do it here now rather than in front of coworkers in a few years. She gave us skills and techniques that I still rely on today, and most importantly, the opportunity to practice.

I was a introverted going in to college, and that class didn't turn my into an extroverted social butterfly in 4 months. However, I have never been paralyzed with fear when required to talk in front of a crowd, and that has been invaluable in my career.

snapetom··on Danish high schoolers will have to verbally defend written assignments
This is great. Sorry, but the Western World has to stop normalizing extreme introvertism. Humans are social. We rely on communication and cooperation to survive. Allowing kids to shelter themselves from interaction and communication during crucial development stages will only hamper them in life.
snapetom··on MariaDB: Promote getting to 10k GitHub stars in server log and client prompt
I've always hated how Postgres merged users, groups, and roles. Users and roles are different in Maria and last I checked, all three are different in Oracle.

I can see how Postgre's evolved that way out of history, when MySQL was thought of as a toy DB. It seems like they added features as a reactionary action then merged them to simplify and now we have three things that are essentially the same. It leads to confusion organization by organization.

snapetom··on Half-Life ported to Mac OS 9
Hah. When I saw the headline, I said, "Finally! I've been asking for this for almost 30 years!"
snapetom··on Why Sony can't bring back its classic Walkman models
No, I mean you're trolling in that you basically read nothing about my original comment.

1) You give a response that doesn't meet half of my requirements. 2) You then give a suggestion that's is fundamentally what I said I did in my original response. Congrats, you demonstrated my gripe about the comments on here too in my original response.

snapetom··on Why Sony can't bring back its classic Walkman models
At this point, I can only assume you're trolling.
snapetom··on Why Sony can't bring back its classic Walkman models
I swear, this site jumps on the tactile control bandwagon when it comes to something like cars, but for this thread, it's all "meh, everything's touchscreen these days. Get used to it."
snapetom··on Why Sony can't bring back its classic Walkman models
I just stated it above. Because I don't want a touchscreen, I want to eventually replace the battery when it starts going bad, I want a good software experience along with it.

Fiio can't even keep their site in order. They have broken links everywhere. Nothing about it makes me think it isn't just another shitty Chinese-made disposable.

snapetom··on Why Sony can't bring back its classic Walkman models
You forgot to add /s. In no universe would this suggestion be at all practical, and meets practically none of the criteria I'm looking for.
snapetom··on Why Sony can't bring back its classic Walkman models
Apple got it right with the original iPod, and your ask, and others, is just to extend it to modern times. A lot of these comments simply aren't helpful, and people chiming in know it. For me, I was looking for

1) Music player that holds a ton of songs.

2) Lossless.

3) No touch screen control.

4) Battery that is long lasting and semi-replaceable.

5) Smaller than modern phones.

6) Great software experience, which for me meant Apple Music compatible.

7) Wired. Not Bluetooth.

A $400 Sony Android-based player doesn't meet 3, 4, nor 5. Most importantly, $400 for a product that doesn't meet some pretty important criteria is ridiculous. A shitty tiny Chinese player isn't going to meet 3, 4, 6 and it'll die on you in a couple of years and you'll be back at square one.

My solution was to buy a 5.5 Gen iPod off eBay ($100), a microSD card carrier (iFlash.xyz - $40), and four microSD cards (Back in my day, $50 each for 256gb). Yes, I had to open the iPod, but yes, it checks all my boxes. And it came in less than the Sony player.

snapetom··on Is this the end of the once-mighty GoPro?
Cameras need to connect somewhere, somehow to offload their videos/photos. Whether that's network, USB, SD card, those are all attack vectors. Hell, even the files themselves can act as payloads.
