snaeker58··on Show HN: Foorr – A minimal to-do app with social accountability
Yeah sorry, lost me at register…

But it sounds like a cool idea!

snaeker58··on Cold shipping might be the next industry that batteries disrupt
The article image reminds me of Theranos…

> She noticed that utilities were spending more on generators and microgrids in wealthier communities, leaving smaller, poorer communities in the lurch. “I saw the impact of what happens during a 56-hour shutoff if you’re a small business and your refrigerator loses power and all of a sudden you have to buy more inventory,” she told TechCrunch. “That was kind of this ‘ah ha’ moment.”

Seems like a decent company, but the title of disrupting anything is absolute TechCrunch typical bs… they do sensitive sample shipping. And their next planned product is a fancy cooler.

> Artyc’s next product will hold five liters, and it’ll likely be targeted at pricey, temperature sensitive foods like herbs, chocolate and wine. Then in 2025, the startup is planning to ship its 25-liter size.

You can really see how she inspired her products based on her experiences in poorer communities :/

Cold shipping truly disrupted and in shambles, I can see the revolution coming. Said nobody.

snaeker58··on Zuckerberg disses closed-source AI competitors as trying to 'create God'
We are not. Would be cool though in some aspects!
snaeker58··on Tripping on Xenon Gas (2023)
Yeah this type of madness is rampant when it comes to AGI believers, always makes me want to drive a nail in my hand.
snaeker58··on Tripping on Xenon Gas (2023)
I wouldn’t use such analogies on wildly unrelated subjects.

Saying „The long term effects of Xenon on the human body and brain are still mostly undocumented when it comes to repeated recreational use.“ sounds so much better!

Especially since almost all common magnets don’t actually effect a hard drives functionality. The internet states you need a magnet with a force of 0,5kg to actually cause data loss. So we’re talking a large neodymium magnet. Which makes this analogy even worse.

It’s honestly incredibly how much your analogy upsets me!

snaeker58··on They took part in Apache ceremonies. School expelled them for satanic activities
Skipping over my general dislike for schools being combined with any form of religion, what school should they go to?

Also why build a Lutheran school in an Apache reservation and not expect them to integrate some degree of their own culture into their new found Christian belief?

From what I understand this seems to be the closest school to them in their reservation. (citation needed)

But in general I can’t believe that one can be expelled in the 21st century in a western country under the reasoning of „doing something satanic“?!

What even is the definition of satanic? I actually want to doubt that that is their official reason of expulsion.

snaeker58··on They took part in Apache ceremonies. School expelled them for satanic activities
From what I’ve seen about this dance:https://youtu.be/uYjvVj6FOcg?si=Ve4tunupUGOrTikG

I really don’t understand why one would expel someone for this, even if they did it in their school break.

Googled it and thank the lord expulsions like these or even compulsory religion classes are actually illegal in my country. Still utterly insane.

snaeker58··on I found a 1-click exploit in South Korea's biggest mobile chat app
I can see some executive being sneaky and saving 0.0001% of all their expenses.
snaeker58··on I found a 1-click exploit in South Korea's biggest mobile chat app
Crazy that only Koreans are eligible for bounty rewards. Someone is going to put their morals aside in the future and their customers are going to be the victims. Also I’m pretty sure a large part of government officials in Korea use KakaoTalk?

But hey at least they actually took action…

snaeker58··on Testing AMD's Giant MI300X
I hate the state of AMDs software for non gamers. RoCm is a war crime (which has improved dramatically in the last two years and still sucks).

But like many have said considering AMD was almost bankrupt their performance is impressive. This really speaks for their hardware division. If only they could get the software side of things fixed!

Also I wonder if NVIDIA has an employee of the decade plaque for CUDA. Because CUDA is the best thing that could’ve happened to them.

snaeker58··on Researchers invent 100% biodegradable 'barley plastic'
I agree that plastic replacements come with their own set of problems. But what do you see as a better alternative?
snaeker58··on I am using AI to drop hats outside my window onto New Yorkers
But we don’t know that and call me naive, but I see this as something that is done on a very small scale, by people who booked a “dropship” on his website. I don’t think you’ll find even a single of those hats in streets around his apartment. The humor is my flavor, and most of the imagine this as a viable product I take as such humor.
snaeker58··on I am using AI to drop hats outside my window onto New Yorkers
I agree (though I don’t know if you agree with me)!

I think this post captures what I’d expect from hacker news quite well. A cool single person project messing around, creating something a community can enjoy.

What I don’t like are these weird doom mentality discussions over AGI (as an example), they just make me cringe really badly.

Then again I really can’t complain, all in all I love Hacker News, great topics, great comments!

snaeker58··on I am using AI to drop hats outside my window onto New Yorkers
I can’t believe I watched a story of using AI to drop hats on people and calling it drop shipping turn into a debate about parties, buzzkills and the risk of addictive substances vs “annoying” people against hat drop shipping and similar ideas, a discussion on the legal bounds of unwanted hat drop shipping, the effect of stray hats on babies and a quantitative analysis on the environmental impact of objects dropped from apartment windows in NYC. Followed by another debate on the mental effect of objects dropping from apartments in cities with skyscrapers. This is amazing.
snaeker58··on Aphantasia: I can not picture things in my mind
The biggest problem with these questions is that they in my opinion don’t actually measure anything.

“Imagine a ball falling of the table.”

Asking questions of what was under the table or the color of the ball is useless (imo). Let me explain: Recall a dream of yours. What is out there in the dream world? Can you tell me what the retail tax is in that dream world? What house number the door of your dream world neighbor has? No? For me the answer is no. Because I only create answers to these questions if they are relevant to the dream or asked.

I forgot the study, but it claimed that people often retrospectively imagine detail based on the question asked. (Citation needed)

I like to believe that dreams and imagination share aspects. And one aspect I see in both of them is that, similarly to video games, any detail is kept to the necessary minimum.

It doesn’t matter what is under the table, it is about a ball falling off the table. Its color doesn’t matter, the color has no effect on the story.

If you retrospectively ask me those questions, you’re just testing if I’m going to make one up in the spot, make one up on the spot and tell myself I didn’t or not make one up on the spot.

I think of my imagination as an abstract realm I can control, that is limited by my ability to comprehend. It’s less vivid than a dream, but a dream gives me no control. Anything I imagine is a feeling, there is no incoming physical aspect.

And the reason why it’s so hard to measure or quantify is because it is best described as a feeling.

snaeker58··on Aphantasia: I can not picture things in my mind
I disagree. Asking someone to name shapes that resemble for example the Sydney Opera house seems to me just a test of creativity, not ability to “visualize” something in your head.

I don’t think we’ll ever get a test, because the entire concept of visualization and imagination is so unquantifiable and abstract. We’re all black boxes in a way to each other, with no real way of describing or showing each other how our version of this “visualization” or “image” or … looks or even feels.

snaeker58··on Aphantasia: I can not picture things in my mind
I really hate these aphantasia questions. It feels too subjective.

I can visualize in a sense, but I would never talk of an image. In fact closing my eyes makes it harder for me to imagine anything.

I can recall my dream from last night for example, I can describe it quite well. If you now would ask me to in my mind modify for example the color of the floor, I couldn’t. Because in “dream reality” I very much remember it wasn’t.

I can daydream, I can imagine vividly. But the moment anyone tells me, “modify what you’re imagining like this”, it all falls apart.

Also what is interesting is the quality of detail between me describing the imaginary situation and reconstructing it in real life. A lot of aspects are lost under a haze when describing it, but when reconstructing it I can tell you if an aspect is right or wrong, not what it should be.

That’s of course my personal experience. Just I feel like Aphantasia is this buzzfeed like diagnosis illness, where you really have a lot of interpretation.

snaeker58··on Safe Superintelligence Inc.
If I’d get a penny every time I heard someone say “AGI is around the corner” I’d have enough money to build myself a house on mars or to afford a 2 room apartment in NYC. Add the Pennies from “Sustainable fusion around the corner” people and I could afford both.
snaeker58··on Apple set to be first Big Tech group to face charges under EU digital law
You’re not wrong, but… while you can’t choose a default navigation app, it will always ask you which one you want to use unless you delete Apple Maps (which you can do). browser engines also are changeable. NFC is linked (no but’s or butts).

Nonetheless your point isn’t less valid, as this is all coming from a European Apple user and even so most of these features have not existed for us very long.

I also (coming from Android) really miss APKs, though not used by the majority, by far one of the best features. Now I have to sign my Apps every 7 days via my Mac or pay for a dev license so I can sign my apps for (I’m not sure but) 30 days?

snaeker58··on iOS 18 will have satellite iMessage and SMS
It be interesting to know what type of infrastructure is behind this, who‘s satellites does Apple use? I’m guessing they must partner with a service? Are satellite ISP‘s a thing (I have no clue)? I mean supporting the amount of iPhones in the US and considering camping is sort of booming, I feel like Apple will create quite a load on „satellite internet“.
snaeker58··on Private Cloud Compute: A new frontier for AI privacy in the cloud
I really also don’t bother about security, but I hate that any argument against people caring about privacy is along the lines of „I have nothing to hide“. Especially on the note of Apple, I remember when a dad was flagged as a pedophile because Apple found photos of his kid in his iCloud and their algorithm decided to get him raided. It’s about control, when you hand your data over to 3rd parties of any kind you are giving up control and one day that will bite you in the ass in some way. I am will to take that risk, you too, but I still think not wanting that is totally valid. A type of angst which I find much more stupid is people being scared of AI taking over the world HAL x Terminator style…
