smtf··on [dead]
I realize it sucks to loose a job, but would anyone rather be let go after Christmas ? With all the holiday debt over your head ? In my experience many companies staff up in the new year making a early year layoff much worse.
smtf··on Urban Coyotes
It's either a small coyote or a large fox. Either way he looks pretty well fed to me; I guess this form of pest control is working ?
smtf··on Ask HN: What would you do with 6 months of free time?
I've always loved traveling to places where the standard of living is much cheaper then where I live. This way you can eat better and do way more extravagant things while potentially saving money. Between 5 star meals you could be hacking your side projects from a posh roof top patio and when your in a slump you can go site seeing.

The other advice I'd give to traveling to relatively exotic places is to somewhere that someone you trust knows well; preferably with said person. The best way to find all the gems of a new place and get a real feel for the local flavor is with someone who knows how to showcase it. If you have friends from interesting places see if they can help you plan a trip, or see if they can join you for some portion of the excursion.

smtf··on Re-entry to US without backscatter or pat-down
If I am understanding this correctly the TSA/Customs officials could submit you to a backscatter/pat-down BEFORE you clear customs and the Constitutional argument evaporates. I imagine that would require an overhaul of the layout of many airports, but perhaps if enough people make a fuss like the author then someone will push for it. Does anyone know of a reason they couldn't do another security screening after you land and just before you clear customs ?

smtf··on Drinking Water Before Meals Aids Weight Loss
I've been told that the 'cool' part is significant. In so far as temperature of your stomach is a factor for good digestion. I'm not sure to what degree that is true but gulping down an icy beverage can't help.
smtf··on Why Tim Ferriss Sold His Muse
I've seen that post linked a few times. I think it misses the point of Ferriss' book. "Idleness is not the goal, doing what you want is". Ferriss optimized his business such that all the shitty things he didn't like doing, which was most, if not all things, could be finished in 4 hours a week. Getting his book sold was something else entirely.
