smrtinsert··on Why Twilio Segment moved from microservices back to a monolith
100%. It's almost like they jumped into it not understanding what they were signing up for.
smrtinsert··on We Need to Die
I don't see how any sort of immortality can be supported by the infrastructure of the world. It's based on people dying, civilization has factored it in. How could you manage resources for populations that never disappeared? No immortal organism exists, I'm pretty sure Darwin already solved this question for us.
smrtinsert··on Boom, bubble, bust, boom. Why should AI be different?
Maybe guard your investments, but the big question back then was "is the internet really that good, will it stick around" and the reality is it won argument hands down. The same thing will prove true about AI.
smrtinsert··on Maybe you’re not trying
Agreed. Its a hair from victim blaming even though the victim is herself.
smrtinsert··on Anthropic’s paper smells like bullshit
A business where the distinguishing factor was exclusivity not technical excellence so it tracks.
smrtinsert··on URLs are state containers
Url state should be descriptive not prescriptive. Either way it is important. Unfortunately my experience on several teams is that businesses never care about stuff like this but users do.
smrtinsert··on Affinity Studio now free
How is modern gimp compared to ps or affinity wrt photo editing? Thinking things like color correction, shadow highlights, maybe generative fill?
smrtinsert··on Affinity Studio now free
More TelemetryWare? No thanks!
smrtinsert··on React vs. Backbone in 2025
The raw jquery version looks better to me: https://justpaste.it/3pz1n
smrtinsert··on React vs. Backbone in 2025
Even the jquery version looks better: https://justpaste.it/3pz1n

But to keep in the good graces of our thought leader overlords, let's start solid or svelte.

smrtinsert··on React vs. Backbone in 2025
There's a world of options away from React today that have those features. We can't pretend only React has them.
smrtinsert··on React vs. Backbone in 2025
> For massive apps with 1,000 components on the same page, maybe React's complexity is justified.

Something is wrong if you need a 1000 components. Not everything has to be exposed as a component. Build something in lower level library and expose it as a react component. There's a real reason something like ag-grid has such a dedicated following.

The reality is Reacts abstraction has always been thin, which begs the question is it truly valuable. It's basically an application pattern masquerading as an abstraction. In 2025, there's no reason any thoughtful organization shouldn't investigate alternatives.

smrtinsert··on Claude Skills are awesome, maybe a bigger deal than MCP
Im already doing "skills" via 1 mcp tool calling a db and its works fine

Not sure what skills adds here other than more meat for influencers to 10x their 10xed agent workflows. 100x productivity what a time to be alive

smrtinsert··on Leaving serverless led to performance improvement and a simplified architecture
Agreed. Wondering what sort of discovery or design phase their legacy arch went thru.
smrtinsert··on Leaving serverless led to performance improvement and a simplified architecture
Helps resumes! No one got to Staff suggesting bash scripts
smrtinsert··on NanoChat – The best ChatGPT that $100 can buy
"Anything that can be autogenerated by a computer shouldn't have to be, it can be automated"
smrtinsert··on Superpowers: How I'm using coding agents in October 2025
Curious what you think of sub agents, don't they still consume a massive amount of tokens compared to simply running in main context? I'm skeptical of any process that starts massively delegating to sub agents. I'm on Pro and don't think its worth upgrading to 200 a month just to not pollute main context.
smrtinsert··on Ask HN: Abandoned/dead projects you think died before their time and why?
Honestly a lot of the time they seem to be be in "what do humans want?" mode.
smrtinsert··on "Vibe code hell" has replaced "tutorial hell" in coding education
Doesn't work if black box. You still have to inspect code performing the operation
smrtinsert··on Regarding the Compact
Is there any precedent in US history for what the administration is asking of the nations top universities? Incredible they have to deal with this.
smrtinsert··on Now open for building: Introducing Gemini CLI extensions
Figma MCP doesn't seem very useful at all and seem to me to compete with their newer prompt based builder. I think they're probably have their AI fork in the road. If they can't integrate these tools someone else will...
smrtinsert··on JetBrains × Zed: Open Interoperability for AI Coding Agents in Your IDE
Which plugins have you compared? I think plugin devs of this generation are only target vscode clones because if it gives them coverage of vibe coders who are happy to pay even for dubious quality.
smrtinsert··on How functional programming shaped and twisted front end development
This is a very incorrect conclusion. Nothing about jquery prevented functional purity. If that's what you wanted, use it as such. Jquery just made browser differences much less of an issue and wrapped it in a nice way. The modern react stack is exactly what all the fp snobs raged against and they weren't wrong about it. Its been said before, there was jsf before react. Both are bad ideas. React has terrible performance is extremely heavyweight and ridiculous for what its used for. There's a reason there's a revolt nearly daily.

To me the major failing here was people over investing in faang thought leadership. Still haven't ever used react angular etc in a major project and gone wow this is great. JQuery got a lot closer. There were many other ideas coming forward around the time those frameworks came up, it was a fertileperiod for frontend. Sounds like we should cycle back.

smrtinsert··on Jeff Bezos says AI is in a bubble but society will get 'gigantic' benefits
AI is in a bubble like we don't need more than 16kb.
smrtinsert··on Sora 2
I agree with the idea that they will like it, but I don't think it will look anything like this. I imagine native AI generations willl produce content will probably be instrutable to anyone older, requiring meme translations. Maybe a channel can be an AI decipherer. Hah.

I've long thought that AI will force new distribution methods because old media is so markedly against it... Maybe this is another Netflix vs Blockbuster moment.

smrtinsert··on A WebGL game where you deliver messages on a tiny planet
Holy crap this game beautiful. It's inspiring, in the way I used to feel when I first loved video games.
smrtinsert··on Demand for human radiologists is at an all-time high
At some point medical equipment is certified in some way for use. Could the same happen for imaging AIs?
smrtinsert··on How to Lead in a Room Full of Experts
Until the cost of storage is 0, this is all still a thing.

The know it all engs were probably right though and you just added the self imposed productivity, performance, and TCO tax that everyone else adds by default
