smoser··on CBP is monitoring US drivers and detaining those with suspicious travel patterns
Toyota was working on a feature for its cars that would report license plates from amber alerts to authorities. https://x.com/SteveMoser/status/1493990907661766664?s=20
smoser··on Holes (1970) [pdf]
An answer to your puzzle in another post that is locked: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=42498953 The "alternate" 5x5 word square that satisfies all the clues without using the words from the first grid is:

    S T R I P
    C H I N A
    R E G A L
    A T O N E
    P A R E R
Breakdown of the solution:

Across

STRIP (Remove the outer layer of, perhaps) — Counterpart to SCALD.

CHINA (Region on a globe) — Counterpart to POLAR.

REGAL (Like some movie theaters; e.g., Regal Cinemas) — Counterpart to ARTSY.

ATONE (Command to a lawbreaker) — Counterpart to CEASE.

PARER (Rhyme for Tom Lehrer /'lɛrər/) — Counterpart to ERROR.

Down

SCRAP (____yard; scrapyard is a common sci-fi setting) — Counterpart to SPACE.

THETA (It goes something like this: Ꮎ) — Counterpart to CORER.

RIGOR (Feature of liturgy, often; strictness/adherence to rubrics) — Counterpart to ALTAR.

INANE (It's vacuous, in a sense) — Counterpart to LASSO.

PALER (Fino is paler than Pedro Ximénez sherry) — Counterpart to DRYER.

smoser··on Show HN: Deta Surf – An open source and local-first AI notebook
This is a neat app. Though when looking at the files in finder it looks like while some files are stored as '.md' files the sample md files only contain HTML.
smoser··on Tahoe's Elephant
Tahoe takes a step back in other ways. Like how you can use tabs in Maps.app anymore.
smoser··on Lina Khan points to Figma IPO as vindication of M&A scrutiny
On the flip side Khan was wrong about iRobot. The results were layoffs at iRobot and now Roombas are made by a Chinese ODM.
smoser··on GM parks claims driver location data was given to insurers, pushing up premiums
"Toyota vehicles could “Alert local authorities if a license plate or other vehicle identifier associated with a suspected vehicle is identified” AKA “Amber Alert Assistance” at first, but later?" https://x.com/SteveMoser/status/1675876541845188611
smoser··on Speech to Text on iPhone vs. Pixel
It is confusing but it is the system (iOS) text to speech used here. You have to tap the Google logo to get Google's text to speech. https://www.cultofmac.com/469485/google-gboard-improve-ios-d...
smoser··on GitHub for Mobile
They need an iOS app for push notifications.
smoser··on GitHub for Mobile
Still need an iOS app for push notifications.
smoser··on About the Apple Card
In the Apply Card Privacy Policy it states that part of the algorithm for credit worthiness is that it checks your Apple ID for Apple purchases. There is a good chance that DHH makes all the Apple purchases in his family and thus he received a higher limit. https://thetapedrive.com/apple-card-onboarding
smoser··on Switch from Chrome to Firefox
You can set a default browser on iOS w/o Jailbreaking with my app UpTime https://www.producthunt.com/posts/uptime-3/edit
smoser··on Apple App Store Principles and Practices
I guess my app slipped through the App Review team since it allows for setting a default browser. https://www.producthunt.com/posts/uptime-3
smoser··on Apple Pay will support NFC tags
From a user's point of view this seems great. No need to wait for congested LTE to download an app in order to pay for a scooter or parking.

I'm curious about the security implications of this though. Seems like it would be easy to make a NFC sticker "skimmer" that you sticker over the official sticker.

smoser··on You probably don’t need input type=“number”
AKA: Chrome’s poor design choice to allow the value of input type=number to change (without warning) on scroll. Safari of course doesn’t have this problem.
smoser··on AirPods with Wireless Charging Case
FYI you can get AirPods 2 without the wireless charging for $40 less.
smoser··on Firefox Send: Free encrypted file transfer service
Besides AirDrop there is "Copy and Paste across devices" https://support.apple.com/kb/ph25168?locale=en_US
smoser··on Antecedent about Steve Jobs telling a contractor to drop out of college
This a12z podcast episode is about gaming but at 2:00 they talk about interacting with Steve Jobs. Including telling the guy that his mouse copy was [terrible]. And Steve Jobs complained about the smell of the contractor's office because it was above a Burger King.
smoser··on DuckDuckGo will use Apple Maps
Hold down shift while scrolling to zoom, just like Maps.app.
smoser··on DuckDuckGo will use Apple Maps
But it does support other/better trackpad gestures like pinch to zoom and twist to rotate the map.
smoser··on How Alexa knows “peanut butter” is one shopping-list item, not two
Amazon is pulling ahead. Siri still adds 'All man milk' to my shopping list instead of almond milk.
smoser··on Microsoft Edge and open source collaboration
Wow a new Microsoft web browser for the Mac! Haven't seen one of those in 15 years.
smoser··on The End Is Near for Mobile Apps?
Functionally yes, most apps could be mobile websites except for one thing: Mobile users don’t use bookmarks. Mobile users use icons on the home screen. It is easier for users to add an app to their home screen than a website.
smoser··on MRI disabled every iOS device in facility
This sounds like a great plot device in a sci-fi or spy novel. What other (human livable) environments will certain computer clocks not work in?
smoser··on Miller Columns
The SO Apple site has some suggestions. Sadly some of the 'app buttons' are outdated. I'm interested making an updated one and throwing it on the App Store. https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/25813/add-an-up-bu...
smoser··on Migrating from Jekyll to Hugo
I like the speed and flexibility of Hugo. It doesn't force you into the blog format like Jekyll does. Jekyll has collections but collections don't have all the features of posts. I keep coming back to Jekyll because of the relative link support that works across VS Code, Github, and Jekyll. Hugo added support then removed it.

smoser··on Show HN: RichTexture – Free and Open Source Rich Text Editor for iOS
I forked Louis D'hauwe's plain text editor - Textor to make it compatible with rich text documents which is pretty simple thanks to UIDocumentBrowserViewController, UITextView, and NSFileWrapper. Take a look!
smoser··on How to set a default browser on iOS (no Jailbreak)
Sure, the name is 'UpTime - Web Browser', link below, and it does support Firefox. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/uptime-web-browser-with-keyb...
smoser··on How to set a default browser on iOS (no Jailbreak)
It should be $2 right now. Maybe iTunes hasn't propagated the price change yet. Thanks for the short description. Let me know if anyone is interested in browser support besides Firefox or Chrome.
smoser··on Algorithmia – Open Marketplace for Algorithms
That's awesome. Honestly I submitted this to HN as a way to look up comments about your site. I was surprised when it came up as a new submission. This is the first time that my 'submission to find the comments' ended up on the front page. I'm glad it made your day.
smoser··on Detect.location: Access iOS location data without actually having access
If Adam Savage was caught by surprise (the location of his home was embedded in a photo he shared online) then I would think a lot of other people would be surprised too.
