smorgusofborg··on How did software development end up dominated by web dev?
I think you could make a similar criticism about construction and architects.. Why would an architect care about burning their limited years to establish themselves on renovations of the vast quantities of older and uninteresting house stock and why we care about software that we can rarely be paid for?

I'm sure many a homeowner is annoyed that they can't get a great architect to do their renovations, yet few are annoyed enough to influence the market.

smorgusofborg··on How did software development end up dominated by web dev?
Yes, to me "completely solves 1)" would mean using mono/etc for the other platforms and having a .net compatible system working seamlessly for all of them.

(Then you could get the same critiques as java web start.)

smorgusofborg··on Covid-19 Vaccine Safety in Children Aged 5–11 Years – US, Nov 3–Dec 19, 2021
That sounds like a calculation by poetic metaphors. There's always been a concern that mutations that cause greater virulence could shift death to younger people via a metabolism paradox like swine flu seemed to have. Death sounding drastic doesn't mean a more drastic genetic difference than the mutations so far.
smorgusofborg··on How did LastPass master passwords get compromised?
If it is a group accumulating passwords via extensions it would make a lot of sense to me if they planned to sell them like credit card data on bulletin boards.

I don't think individual financial accounts would sell that well without really knowing if you have the necessary associated email accounts, etc to delay detection of a fraud.

I also don't think such groups are necessarily sophisticated enough not to have someone slip up at stage 2 of their plan, give away a few accounts to boast, etc, etc.

smorgusofborg··on Exposure to plastics during pregnancy can raise blood pressure
The FDA evaluates food packaging and optimistically dismisses chemicals entering the consumer. But let's assume they don't, you are saying that given a new chemical added to your bloodstream you want to assume it is safe based on 0 evidence when presented with weak evidence for what it actually does?
smorgusofborg··on Exposure to plastics during pregnancy can raise blood pressure
If it is showing up in bloodstreams it needed FDA approval. That we can do these studies is an unacceptable regulatory gap. Given enough substances it is only a matter of time until we will eventually be doomed by this incompetence if our incompetence of treating releasing CO2 in any quantity as harmless doesn't doom us first.
smorgusofborg··on Shared e-bikes and e-scooters are worse for the environment than owned ones
If you don't exercisize in your commute you more likely use more energy to either burn energy or treat the results of too much stored energy.
smorgusofborg··on CDC Updates, Shortens Recommended Isolation and Quarantine Period
I don't really get why the positive test rate is not supposed to have gone up significantly with availability of at home tests. Shortages of at home tests would naturally lower it again, but isn't this a useless number now that we don't know how many people used tests they already had at home to skip being in the negative reported results?
smorgusofborg··on Ubisoft deleted account with hundreds of dollars’ worth of games for inactivity
I have to admit the NFT is a positive here since you could prove ownership that a site like archive.org could prove they could verify.. So an independent third party could have more ways to navigate IP law and be able to replace failing services, serve older content the site wants to forget, etc.
smorgusofborg··on Ubisoft deleted account with hundreds of dollars’ worth of games for inactivity
I think it would be far more frequent that crackers gain control of NFTs and transfer them to a new account. Are users going to rejoice in the existence of a smart receipt they didn't understand when they are locked out of their purchases and perhaps declared dead on the block chain?
smorgusofborg··on Ask HN: Been writing code for 40 years and can't get hired
I don't really know much about that job market but I would just point out that becoming a deeper expert in something very iOS developer specific might be a strategic mistake compared to learning just enough about the non-native apps people's needs to help them publish their apps on iOS.

With one group you may be a specialist now while with the other they may always have a proof you are not a true scottsmann if staying a scottsmann is their full-time job.

smorgusofborg··on Ask HN: Been writing code for 40 years and can't get hired
Someone else already mentioned it but I also think it is a good idea to look for University IT/DevOps positions, or maybe scientific computing, etc. They are generally much more interested in reliability over risk and are much happier with someone who will hold things together for a few decades than someone who will bring in fads and then get hired away.
smorgusofborg··on Omicron Is the Beginning of the End
Looking at that nature article I think the delusion is that influenza hasn't also been causing many more problems in young healthy people like the ones described and that makes it hard to have a real discussion about what to do if after everyone has had at least one exposure to a COVID virus we end up with data showing we have gotten to two pandemics that should be equally (un)acceptable.
smorgusofborg··on Microsoft forked MIT licensed repo and changed the copyright [fixed]
How does your license prevent someone redistributing source code over GitHub? What does copilot claim as far as licensing rights beyond fair use?

You may be practically limiting copilots use of your code but I don't see any licensing difference if Microsoft hosts Copyright code or scrapes copyright code.

smorgusofborg··on Show HN: Retire 35
> Retirement by 35 means others must retire later than they should, unless you pretend to be self-sufficient.

The advice includes lowering your expenses by spending less. You are providing less total work and you are taking the value of that work back at a slower rate. So there's no reason anyone else has to work more or less. We simply don't need the lifestyle we are buying during our working years. Personally, I think it is time to drop the standard to a 30 hour work week.

It's funny that there is usually no winning with an argument over change in work habits because either you hurt people by making them work or you hurt people by taking away their work. ( Somehow the status quo is accidentally perfect, unless of course you examine any part of it.)

smorgusofborg··on How to Set Low Expectations at Your Two Remote Jobs
That's like pointing out the secretary of defense is a rich secretary.. He didn't get the job for his typing skills.
smorgusofborg··on Regulators Shut Down Lending Platform (YC Alum) LendUp
3% a month is not reasonable by past metrics. Utility companies like heating oil that didn't want to loan money used to charge 0.5-1.5% per month after the grace period back when normal mortgage rates were ~7% (APY) and car loans more like 11%(APY).

This is simply being in the business of gouging people who will end up needing to carry loans over and are better off having bad credit but never really have a point of change where they realize they need to declare bankruptcy or take other financial advice.

smorgusofborg··on Do not use Digital Ocean for production
True though with a lot of the European ones you get good support and/or can pay explicitly for a level of support.

The email disappearing with no trace sounds like Gmail hating DO address blocks though.. Gmail sends only a fraction of things it thinks are spam to the spam folder.

smorgusofborg··on Animal protein intake is inversely associated with mortality in older adults
The study was done in the EU on older adults.. They are very unlikely to eat McDonalds and meat is not as subsidized as in the US. This study might return opposite results in the US, or even elsewhere within the EU like Germany, where obesity is closer to the US.

Also their reference to animal protein might mean they are on average moving higher fat meat/lower quality meat eaters toward the lower animal protein intake than average if this demographic eats a lot of meat but of different quality.

smorgusofborg··on Ask HN: My client want an agent on my laptop. Is this the new normal?
It doesn't sound normal to me. I would recommend you contact your National Data Protection Authority and provide them the data you've received and cancel the contract.
smorgusofborg··on Professional maintainers: a wake-up call
> as users expect more features

I think mobile was a reprieve for commercial software and UX specialists and the increasingly negative comments on new OS versions indicate it is close to done like desktop.

For every user that likes a change there are 19 that prefer the flow they already learned to stay exactly the same and at least half are looking for exploitive attempts to modify their behavior in anything a publisher changes.

smorgusofborg··on Ask HN: Own .com for 7 years, a new company trademarked my name registered .NET
Unless they are in the porn business, a porn site is not trademark infringement..
smorgusofborg··on Tell HN: You can't add “no ads” in your Play Store app's title
Yes, this time it is digital so it's hopeless and since someone may get into a long dispute over product placements, every app should be equally likely to be bringing in protocols that are purely for ads. The only solution is to let the distributor just remove all information that might inform our decisions.

Here is the FDA's rules for the term "lite":

https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/cdrh/cfdocs/cfcfr/CFR...

Certainly not perfect, but better than if the next time a product at whole foods gets caught in a fraud we let Amazon remark everything as "food".

smorgusofborg··on Tell HN: You can't add “no ads” in your Play Store app's title
Putting "no added sugar" on a product box isn't meaningless because there are legal reprucussions to fraud. If nothing is happening when games with "no ads" have ads then that is a criticism to bring to the regulators.
smorgusofborg··on Fall on walk from bed to desk is workplace accident, German court rules
Here in Switzerland, if you work more than 8 hours a week your employer is simply responsible for all accident insurance, working less they can buy limited coverage leaving you to buy your own for off hours.

Health insurance is about 20X more expensive than accident and is none of your employers business so I'm not sure why Americans are fussing.

smorgusofborg··on Study: Most Dog Breeds Highly Inbred
Looks? Many people are conditioned to like the near death look of royalty through association with wealth and power. Does a defect in the observer's taste make the observed not bleed to death?

Anemias such as sickle cell and malaria are the text book example. Having two parents from the same area means high frequency of them having the same gene. The same sickle cell anemia gene makes one quarter of their children fully anemic and leaves one quarter unprotected from malaria. One such parent makes half of children protected and half unprotected.

Anyone can breed on the dominant traits of genes and talk about looks. Their results are defective because of recessive traits. Thus a first mutt with their line has much higher odds of being healthy even if it's other parent is also inbred. But two cross breeds from those same lines are going to be more likely to produce unhealthy offspring again when compared to fuller mutts.

smorgusofborg··on Study: Most Dog Breeds Highly Inbred
That is not correct as typical remaining genetic problems are not successfully bred out since they are recessive.

The mutt will almost always be healthier than it's parents as it is highly unlikely to have any recessive ailments of either line.

smorgusofborg··on Study: Most Dog Breeds Highly Inbred
Successfully performing an ethical responsibility to house dogs in a good situation inherently deprioritizes every member of the the public getting a great choice in free dogs. That is a successful supply side shortage which is the goal.

I don't see how I could ethically agree that people's rights to get the dog they want through a rescue shelter exists and is more important to a shelter than the welfare of the dogs placed in it's care.

smorgusofborg··on Study: Most Dog Breeds Highly Inbred
I find it a bit ironic that you and the OP seem to be saying these rescue groups work for their actual goal and the goal of the shelter.
smorgusofborg··on Germany locks down unvaccinated people, as leaders plan to make shots compulsory
There are numerous reasons why we are incapable of a perfect lockdown of a region of any reasonable scale even before economic concerns. So it's use as a solution is more of a whataboutism for not considering reasonable actions.
