smlckz··on Loopy C Puzzle (2011)
I'd suggest that instead of all of those ''\( \oplus \) denote bitwise XOR operation on two nonnegative integers'', put that before all your maths into a ''Notation: '' line so that you do not have to repeat yourself.
smlckz··on Guidance to developers affected by effort to block less secure browsers, apps
If I could rent a VPS, I could buy a smartphone instead. sigh

My j2me phone's screen resolution is 320x240, and Opera's server does a respectable job in transforming webpages to fit into that small screen size. It also uses a binary file format named OPML to encode the transformed page. With my 2G internet connection, it'd take much more time to load a page and cost me more to load images.

smlckz··on Guidance to developers affected by effort to block less secure browsers, apps
If browsers which does "server-side rendering" are blocked from accessing my Google Account, I lose my access to all Google services requiring sign-in like Gmail etc.

I don't have the privilege to own a desktop, laptop, or even smartphone. I am using a J2ME enabled feature phone with Opera Mini to access the internet. Most websites requiring "modern browsers" are out of reach from me. Thanks to all the people who maintain the websites that are functional without JS or upto ES5.1 (last JS version supported by Opera's server rendering powered by Presto) or less. Only Google Search and Gmail works in Opera Mini, other Google services don't.

So I am out of luck! Anyone out of luck like me?

smlckz··on Show HN: Taurus – A Concurrent Gemini Server
I think instead of a mutable GeminiRespone, add that not_found() (and subsequently new response types) into GeminiResponse impl and construct one when needed. And then, for consistency, GeminiResponse::new() should become GeminiReponse::success().
smlckz··on Show HN: Taurus – A Concurrent Gemini Server
Great job! I actually started reading the source code.

In src/gemini.rs you wrote:

You meant ''GeminiResponse''?

smlckz··on The EU is set to declare war on encryption
This is the Common Master Key (CMK) theory. How are they going to keep CMK secret (using encryption? which encryption?) and they can make sure the holders of CMK are honest (that they can't be forced/bribed/etc.) about their usage?
smlckz··on The EU is set to declare war on encryption
oh god, please teach these people about encryption: what they're trying to do - it does not work like they think it works (as it seems to be).

> Locking the door of your house (with near impossible to break locks) prevents us to find out what you're doing/keeping in your house, so we can't know whether you're doing/keeping something illegal in your house. So we are going to ban the making and using of unbreakable (or infeasable to break open) locks for locking the door of your house.

How solving the Collatz conjecture solves any ''real world'' problem? (Why will they give any funding for solving it?)

Do you think you will be able see it solved in your lifetime?

smlckz··on A Clean Start for the Web
hmm. all toolings are around html. it isn't or meant to be going mainstream. just a niche...

>> All you're doing is fracturing the ecosystem needlessly.

I haven't done anything yet ;)

smlckz··on A Clean Start for the Web
Yes, this does look like html in another cloth. I learnt about this from here: https://nofluffjuststuff.com/blog/douglas_crockford/2007/06/...

Compare:

        <strong>important</strong>
with:

        @strong{important}

It looks like some characters saved here. I don't know how much savings would be in the long run.

For big sections, one could use @begin{blah} content here @end{blah}.

It looks a bit plesant in my eyes (than html). And only _one_ special character @, which is repeated twice to escape it.

smlckz··on A Clean Start for the Web
If I think about a document web, I don't think everyone will like to write in Markdown. There are many ''lightweight markup language''s to choose from. So maybe there could be a ''low-level'' markup language like Scribe or Texinfo to compile into from your favourite markup language. I have a small example of what that might look like here (just the sketch, not impl): https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=24249636

What do you think?

smlckz··on A Clean Start for the Web
I don't think everyone will like markdown or any html-free subsets of it. It'd be better to have a low level format for documents which could be a text or a binary format.

If I think about a text format, the first thing that comes up in my mind is something like Scribe or Texinfo.

Like this:

This is what you write...

        ---
        title = Title here
        ---
        # Heading here
        Blah **blah** _meh_ duh @haha.

which is transformed into something like this...

        @document[type=lwdml,version=1.1]
        @meta[
            generator="lwdml-md 0.2.7";
            time='iso8601#2021-12-31T23:57:34Z#';
            docversion=0.1;
        ]
        @title|Title here|
        @main
        @heading(Heading here)
        @start{text}
        Blah @bold(blah) @emph(meh) duh @@haha.
        @end{text}
        @eof.
...which is then served. This is at least human readable, clean and less repetation and clutter (than html (I think)).

In this system, you'd be writing in your favourite markup language (markdown, reST, ...) and compiling it to be served :).

smlckz··on Duality of Vector Spaces (2017)
Can I think of one-forms as partially applied (curried) dot product? (Forgive me for the usage of pseudo-Haskell notation below.)

Let V F be a vector space over F. The (curried) inner product is

        dot :: V F -> V F -> F
Now I take each vector in a vector v :: V F and apply it to ''dot'' partially to get a covector/one-form v* :: V F -> F.

If I take all vectors in V F and apply each of them partially, I should get the covector space V* F :: V F -> F over the field F.

Now, if this makes sense, tell me how to construct

        V** F

from this and show that it's isomorphic to V F.
smlckz··on Google resumes its attack on the URL bar, hides full addresses on Chrome 86
There's more ''consumers'' out there than ''real people''.
smlckz··on Google resumes its attack on the URL bar, hides full addresses on Chrome 86
Now you know about web. Many (all?) people here (reading this shit) know. If you hear about what they are into, they are trying to get ''the next billion'' people into Their hands. Most of this ''next billion'' people don't have the time and/or courage to learn anything. They want to get their job done. (They will learn if they're forced to.)

What these big companies are trying to do is very clear. They don't want these fools to know much about web. If these people suddenly starts learning about how web works, that'd be a disaster (for Them).

Now, the address bar is just a distraction to them, nothing else. Now, if Google is removing them, let them. If the address bar is hidden, then there's less clutter. So, they'll think that it's better. (You and me know that isn't any better for us. I'd be really angry if they completely remove it.)

> Why are you referring to those big companies as 'Them'?

< You don't know yet?

smlckz··on Google resumes its attack on the URL bar, hides full addresses on Chrome 86
Sigh. Now browsers are as powerful as OSes. Why do you need OSes?

Address bars? People don't need them. Google should tell you which website you're visiting is good or which is bad if they hide the address bar.

smlckz··on Unlearn rotation matrices as rotations
I remember asking in freenode irc channel ##math that why matrix multiplication is defined like that, why not in any other way. I was told that:

>> cuz the composition of linear maps are defined like that.

It took a long time to understand what they meant. Still I see how it is taught to work out mechanically. Brave friends of mine went to the Wikipedia page to come back with more confusion. Wikipedia is a great reference when you know the subject well enough.
