Thanks! It's amazing how the Nitter UX is actually better than Twitter itself (showing proper context)

Good.

Wow I wonder what the sentiment / morale on the inside of OpenAI right now is like.

smlacy··on 8GB vs. 16GB M3 Mac
Or maybe even just a $500 Chromebook?
smlacy··on Apple's Bob Borchers: '8GB RAM Is Enough for a Professional MacBook'
And with unified memory, you need to share with the GPU, which will have at least 2x framebuffers at full screen resolution and bit depth, as well as any/all required texture memory, shaders, etc. Likely won't even have anywhere near 8GB for the system to use.
smlacy··on Apple insists 8GB unified memory equals 16GB regular RAM
Really shows how technically savvy Apple thinks their customers are. Just one more point supporting "Apple products aren't for people who understand technology."
smlacy··on Email Steve Jobs sent to himself 1 year before his passing
I'm left wondering if he wrote this under the influence of psychedelics, and if this was an attempt to capture/maintain the insight that he feared he would forget.
smlacy··on Sweden Sans
Wow, this is really nice looking. Almost monospaced, and could easily be tweaked into a really nice looking font for programming.
smlacy··on Matrix multiplication using only addition
Writing 'n' instead of 'and' when discussing mathematics is generally a very bad idea. Your example is a good one, but your use of abbreviations in your writing is horrid.

smlacy··on Apple Introduces M2 Ultra
So you're saying it's not a "tax" per say and that the hardware premiums actually go to R&D on next gen systems?

Apple's profit margin says otherwise. :)

> Apple net profit margin as of March 31, 2023 is 24.49%.

Yeah, very much unlike your comment. Strange, that.

If only such a statement could be made about their horrible mobile apps needed to fly these drones.
smlacy··on Pipe Inspection Robot [video]
...Where low effort content reigns supreme I guess.
smlacy··on Pipe Inspection Robot [video]
Almost like these are videos coming straight out of the Dead Internet. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_Internet_theory
smlacy··on Pipe Inspection Robot [video]
What's with this kind of "Technical Innovation" video? Synthesized voiceover, royalty-free upbeat stock music background, myriad of grammatical and factual errors, over-hypes a fairly simple device, clearly developed/produced outside of the U.S. but is targeting an English-speaking audience.

I understand the "looking for funding" aspect of this, but if you can't get simple grammatical errors fixed, or honestly, if you can't afford to higher quality voiceover talent for your promotional video, then it just makes the product seem like a scam. Its fascinating that the producers of this device and video don't realize how bad this kind of thing could make them look.

There was lot of talk of "spherical gear" in the intro to the video, but as best as I could tell, the robot itself didn't use a spherical gear at all.

smlacy··on How to Ask Questions the Smart Way (2014)
What a pretentious bunch of gatekeeping nonsense.

Clearly, ESR (and anyone following the tenets of documents like this) are not actually interested in teaching anyone anything. They have a truly transactional perspective on "Question Asking" in that some questions are "worthy of answering" and others aren't. People who "Take without giving back" (his words) are exactly those who you're teaching. They absorb knowledge directly from those providing the answers.

Teaching is the act of understanding where your audience is in the learning process, and leading/guiding them through that journey in a kind and patient way. The truly ignorant don't know how to ask the question. Think of a child who's first learning computer programming. Think of an adult who's studying a foreign language for the first time. Think of the questions of a child who's never experienced snow.

> What we are, unapologetically, is hostile to people who seem to be unwilling to think or to do their own homework before asking questions. People like that are time sinks — they take without giving back, and they waste time we could have spent on another question more interesting and another person more worthy of an answer. We call people like this “losers” (and for historical reasons we sometimes spell it “lusers”).

And this is why "internet hostility" is a thing. Good job creating this horrible culture right from the start.

Please don't follow the advice of this column. Be patient. Encourage anyone and everyone to ask questions, even if they're "duplicates" or "easy to answer". Use the Socratic Method (ask questions that lead to more questions). Actually teach people things.

smlacy··on SimCity launched a decade ago, and it was so disastrous it killed the series
What a bizarre title. Obviously, SimCity has been around for a lot longer than a decade. The original Maxis SimCity launched in 1989.
smlacy··on Berkeley Mono Ligatures Release
Signed up for the "free trial" font (for personal use) and was particularly disappointed by this:

Please note that the trial version has the following limitations:

  * Limited to ASCII-128 character set
  * Missing '7' and 'S' glyphs
  * Swapped: '/' and '\', '\*' and '#'
smlacy··on A Perceptually Meaningful Audio Visualizer (2016)
Interesting, and I'd love to see some more demos on "traditional" music (Symphonic/Orchestral, Jazz, Beatles, etc.). I'm sure the the highly synthetic and "pure" music used in the demo video sure leads to a fairly coherent visualization as compared to more natural/acoustic sources of sound.

Also, what about any stereo components? Capturing that in the visualization would also be nice.

smlacy··on Vikunja – Open-source, self-hostable to-do app
Couldn't agree more! The real irony is that usually it's sold as "Docker makes installing, upgrading and maintaining easier."
smlacy··on FAA NOTAM System Outage
Your belief isn't evidence, and you shouldn't present it as such.
smlacy··on FAA NOTAM System Outage
Do you? Your arguments are classic whataboutism, and conspiracy/fearmongering.

Read up on the Burden of Proof. If you make outlandish claims, they have to come with substantial evidence.
