smithcoin··on Is this the end of crypto?
Which will come first: the year of the linux desktop, full self driving teslas or the death of crypto?
smithcoin··on Vast Majority of People Who Invest in Bitcoin Inevitably Lose Money, Study Shows
My dollars keep losing value too. Since bitcoin came out in 2009 my dollars have lost 28% of their value to inflation[0].

smithcoin··on Thirteen Years of Go
> Lack of docs, broken and confusing functionality, limited language features, bizarre operations.

You are painting with a pretty broad brush, can you provide a concrete example of these?

smithcoin··on Bitcoin falls under $16,000
Why is this news?

Sorry, I must have missed all of the following posts:

- AMZN under $100 (Down 48% YOY) - GOOG under $100 (Down 42% YOY) - AMD under $60 (Down 59% YOY) - META at $101 (Down 77% YOY)

and the list goes on.

What is it about bitcoin that brings people into these threads to say "good riddance! I hope it dies because all of it's negative externalities."?

To the oblivious observer it would appear cryptocurrency lives rent free in many heads in this space. If you don't care for it why pay attention to it?

I am not a fan of BlackRock. The last thing I could imagine spending my time doing would be checking BLK on the NYSE to gleefully dance on its grave when it misses its earnings, and then hopping into my echo chamber to share the news with anonymous strangers.

smithcoin··on Heroku's new low cost plans
I’m going to miss Heroku free tiers. Using them while following the Rails tutorial is what got me into programming.
smithcoin··on Framework Laptops now have 4 Thunderbolt 4 ports
PowerBI is the killer app for windows is seems. The only two things we have a windows box in our office for are powerBI and writing SD cards for windowsCE.

While it is not exactly PowerBI the only thing I have found that is similar and is on Linux is metabase[0]. It's open source and free to run locally (or self-hosted) without user limits. It can connect to multiple dbs, and allows for visual query editing as well as SQL. You can build dashboards, save SQL snippets, etc. You can even send automated emails based on query results. I hope it works for you. My company and I are very happy users.

smithcoin··on Ask HN: “Contact Us” Pricing
Seems like a good side project. A database where people could submit their SAAS pricing in a Glassdoor like fashion.
smithcoin··on [dead]
It would appear GCP Compute engine is down. I cannot view my clusters with kubectl. The underlying vms appear to be running though.
smithcoin··on Ask HN: Examples of Top C# Code?
This applies to their libraries in other languages as well, their Ruby one is a great reference too.
smithcoin··on WhatsApp goes down for users globally
Coincidental timing for me- anecdotally I noticed a few WhatsApp commercials during the Monday Night Football game last evening. Meta was hyping up how its end to end encrypted. That’s the first time I have seen national tv adverting for WhatsApp. There also were commercials for Meta’s new headsets so maybe it was part of a larger spend.
smithcoin··on Tell HN: A Demo Day without the investors
Metabase is free if self hosted, you charge per query.

Seems like a no-brainer to me.

smithcoin··on Remote work has been a boon for night owls
I respect the point in the articles regarding remote work leveling the playing field for people who are more productive later in the day. I myself find my best work is done between 8-11 pm.

> There are thousands like me and we don’t care what you think

If the author truly didn't care what others thought they wouldn't publish this article using such a humble-brag tone in Fortune IMHO. The same article could have been published without the egocentric narrative in the beginning and end and had the same effect.

smithcoin··on GitLab 15.5
We use it as an all in one but even at that price it doesn’t make sense. The problem with being all in one is that you at least have to execute at everything. I really feel they’ve lost their way in implementing the meaningful things. It’s CI is the only thing that’s keeps us going.
smithcoin··on GitLab 15.5
> I'm just fed up of having to put up with using it day-to-day, because clients I work with decided it would be great to pick it X years ago

This is my sentiment today when using the product.

smithcoin··on GitLab 15.5
I was a happy gitlab user for a long time. As ops manager I led the migration from GitHub to gitlab 3 years ago. At the time it seemed like a great decision. Now, as tech director I am looking to switch us back. It is very clear in my interactions with gitlab they do not care about small companies. Their pricing structure is bonkers and has completely catered out the middle. IMHO the jumping the shark moment was the IPO.

I want gitlab to succeed. I’ve spent several sessions with various teams there sharing my feedback and it goes nowhere. I am not arrogant enough that I expect it to be implemented; there are no follow ups even for clarity or to say “thanks but no thanks”.

How is their code search so broken at this point? What features are they cranking out that are more important than making the site usable? Right now it looks like they are solely focused on implementing pricing increases, storage limits and user restrictions. I have had a representative say to me why don’t you upgrade to premium- as if a $99/seat/user/month is palatable to any company or a realistic solution.

I get that companies need to make money, but their approach is tone deaf. They had an issue where pricing was discussed and it ended up changing nothing [0].

I agree with the sentiment in this thread. It seems there are two common themes. 1- the inconsistencies in the UI are frustrating many people. 2- The pricing that probably made them an attractive alternative is no longer there.

I look forward to the incoming PR damage control in this thread per company policy [1], that again will lead to no changes.

smithcoin··on Defending Privacy in Crypto
I think we should sanction using cash, it can be used untraceably and anonymously. Tornado Cash did $7 Billion in transactions. According to the US Treasury $300 Billion was laundered in US dollars last year. I think we are going after the wrong target.
smithcoin··on Defending Privacy in Crypto
HSBC laundered $881 million for the Sinaloa cartel. How much of that ended up causing human suffering and the loss of life?

The solution must be to ban all banks and cash as they are the instruments that facilitated these transactions.

smithcoin··on The future of cryptocurrency is at stake in Ethereum’s switch
Thank you for leaving an insightful comment on this topic. I find this much more engaging than the typical drive by crypto sucks comment. Running a node comes with an interesting set of problems, there are additional problems when considering staking as well. Something to note is that when staking[0] it is suggested to use 32ETH. At today's market rate[1] that is nearly $50,000

smithcoin··on Ask HN: What does your mother tell people about your work or employment?
We get customer service calls from people demanding to "speak to whoever is in charge of the Bitcoins"
smithcoin··on Ask HN: What does your mother tell people about your work or employment?
That’s a good one, I’m going to use this.
smithcoin··on Ask HN: What does your mother tell people about your work or employment?
I’m a Tech Director for a fintech start up. My mom says “he works for Bitcoin”.
smithcoin··on “I’m glad climate is not a crisis…”
So many of todays’ issues like the housing crisis are directly caused by prevailing NIMBY attitudes e.g multi-family housing zoning laws. Unfortunately, the cruel irony is people who want real change often through their own cognitive dissonance vote or act against their best interests when the “M” in NIMBY turns out to be themselves.
smithcoin··on “I just got a copyright claim for *TYPING ON MY KEYBOARD*”
I have been getting errors on reddit lately when I click any comment section not logged in. Something along the lines of "repeated errors on <<site>>" and the page is white.
smithcoin··on “I just got a copyright claim for *TYPING ON MY KEYBOARD*”
Does anybody else get an error every time you click a link to twitter?

Edit* To be clear it seems to be browser independent. I use firefox on my mac and safari on my iphone and it seems every time I click a link to twitter I get an error and have to refresh the page.

smithcoin··on Crypto crash deepens, stocks slip
I hope the crypto prices keeps crashing, let's get rid of the speculators and posers.
smithcoin··on Google Cloud Networking reporting issues
Brutal. We are seeing requests that originate from heroku time out because response times are well over 30 seconds.
smithcoin··on Google Cloud vs. AWS Onboarding Comparison
It's not much better if you end up being a GCP customer.

My company has gone through 4 reps in 3 years. Every time we get a new GCP rep they just want to talk to us about "expanding our use of GCP offerings". The only thing they want to talk about is starting to use BigQuery - not my business at all.

I signed up for a Google Cloud Security summit, and afterwards a sales rep reached out me. It was obvious from the start they had no idea I was a gsuite or GCP customer. They then directed me to a NEW account manager (#4) even though I had been working with a different one. I had worked with the prior account rep going over our architecture to make sure everything was kosher (sustained use discounts etc). I even made them a schematic of our architecture on GCP at their request. Once I provided that to them I was met with radio silence.

It's really insulting, and to me obvious they don't care about my company at all. We're looking at other options.

I wouldn't be surprised if somehow this post leads to me getting an email from another rep "Wanting to start over and doing things right", which will inevitably devolve into the discussion of how can I use BigQuery.
