smilesnd··on Ask HN: Is 23andMe DNA testing worth it?
Is it worth it, nope.

If you actually got any benefit from knowing your genetic conditions you were more pre disposition to then insurance companies would offer it to you for "free" to improve there screening process (or they could be purchasing that data from 23andme). But really knowing you are 20% more likely to get breast cancer are you going to start getting more breast exams, or just keep on living life?

Plus a couple months ago HN had a link to a news article where they sent there DNA off to multiple companies that do DNA testing and had mix results across the board. Companies like 23andme are only as good as the database of DNA they have. You will always get mix results because comparing DNA falls into NP where you can not improve the time it takes to compare DNA.

You will never get a full picture of you DNA from a service that only charges a few hundred bucks. It is like paying $10 a month and expecting a CDN at google scale.

smilesnd··on Ask HN: Is 23andMe DNA testing worth it?
It makes it simpler for police and three letter agencies to gain access to your dna without needing to go through proper channels. It is how that famous serial killer/rapist got caught on a 30 year old cold case.

I know the response is "Well I ani't killing/raping so it doesn't matter."

A lot of people have been sent to jail on false positives on dna results. It takes to much time to actually compare a large chunk of dna so they select certain parts to compare it to and if you fall into the unlucky percentage then you are screwed.

smilesnd··on Ask HN: What did you learn the hard way?
I agree with this full-heartedly I work for a company where my boss told me a couple months in having a dev department was a waste of money for the company, and we were lucky to have a job. The company bread and butter was software that transcribe medical records from paper to digital. What the CEO and sale force didn't tell anyone it was actually a cubical farm of humans transcribing it all since the software was horrible. The environment was so horrible every worth while dev/IT person regularly drop out as soon as there contract was over or till they just didn't show up one day. The only reason the company even keep "functioning" was out sourcing everything to India. There database was duck tape and string together in ways that only the elders understood how to pull things out of it.

If you walk into any company where different departments get praise more then others it is a sign to walk out. You will always get treated like a second rate employee in those environments.

smilesnd··on Ask HN: Do you really need a $1000 phone?
I would if it was the last phone I ever needed. It had full service unless you were a mile underground. A battery life that made Jesus jealous.

I like the future idea that phones become such a throw away item you can buy them from vending machines with instant service.

smilesnd··on Ask HN: Solutions for collaborative code review, pair programming?
Vim, ssh, irc, mumble, and screen all the tools I need for collaborating on code with others.
smilesnd··on Ask HN: Have you built a house?
I have done construction since I was 8.

First off laws, you be surprise what kind of laws there are in your state/city. Where I live you must have a 3 foot drop on your roof. The only allowed material for building houses is wood and bricks. You wouldn't be able to build steel or cement house where I live.

Second location location location, you be surprise how many house get flooded because they are built in a bad spot or because while they were building the house they accidentally rerouted water paths. The other thing is you find some exotic or endanger animal on the premise and have to stop all the construction. Do your research, walk around the land and property, and go during different weather what might be a warm spot in the sun might be a swamp in a lite rainfall.

Third define massive because my definition of a massive house is everyone with there own bedroom and one extra room besides the kitchen and living room.

Fourth hooking up to water, electricity, and internet. Just because someone down the street has all these things doesn't mean they going to run them to your house. I have family friends that has neighbors that they can wave to each other through kitchen windows yet they can not get the same ISP hook up they have and have to use satellite internet. They also cannot get city water like them for some odd ball reason only thing they get is electricity.

Fifth you be surprise what unknowns cost in construction. There is a reason why neighborhoods have the same cookie cut houses covering a neighborhood. When you buy $100k worth of material it comes with a no return policy. If something funky happens you have to absorb those cost no matter what. You hire someone to build a house and $10k worth of material got stolen! You going to have to toss in another $10k to cover that stolen material. Also you might be surprise how difficult a bank loan is to get for new constructions.

In my experience unless you you have more money then you know what to do with a custom house won't benefit you more then a prefab or buying used. Just like new people to software they only see the surface think I can do this then learn what kind of hell it is. You will either be the 99% that regret it or the 1% that loves it. It is going to cost you more then you think, and take longer then you think. You will have to jump over a lot of hurdles and learn things you never knew existed.

smilesnd··on Ask HN: How long does it take to learn a new keyboard layout?
Roughly a week when I did it. Learning it and getting comfort wasn't hard at all.

Switching between the two was a little difficult if I went into autopilot, but was manageable.

The worst part of the experience was if anyone else touch my keyboard I would have to explain to them that it isn't qwerty, and wish them best of luck. Most of the people didn't understand why I would do such a evil thing to my keyboard. After a while it became such a thing that I actually went back to qwerty just so I wouldn't have to listen to people talk about it.

smilesnd··on Ask HN: Dealing with a competitor who is scraping my content and ranking higher
Learn to accept it. Only way to stop scrapers is to make it a financial burden for them to scrape your website. There are to many ip address, proxy, vpn, and botnets for you to try and block them all. You can write code to try and tell legit traffic from scrapers traffic but then they will just figure out how to bypass that through trial and error. You can try to take legal action, but that will cost you money up front and might take longer then you think. You can try to get there service terminated, but most host won't do it without a court order. You can make you html/css hell to read randomize autogen all your class and id tags. Put all you elements in random order so the people writing the scraping code don't have a default template they can update in minutes. Use javascript to actually send the data which then you use to identify people and have a call home function so they cannot hide behind proxies and vpn and such.

These are all just things that will slow them down, but won't stop them. Make it cost them more money then they make using your data will be the only way to truly stop them.

smilesnd··on Ask HN: How did you find your current job?
Got a recruiter she was the worse (dropped her after she committed some criminal acts and repeatedly lied to her clients) would have me in a senior position if she could when I had zero experience. Took first job that made me a offer. Left when my contract was up, but meet a handful of good guys. Every job after that has been refers from guys I meet contracting at places, but I never found a place worth staying at. I have learn to separate the bullshitters and people with genuine interest in tech. Group messages, joke emails, epic lunches, and understanding someones true ability has gotten me more work then any recruiting agency has ever been able to.
smilesnd··on Ask HN: How to learn to sleep on your back?
Duck tape and plastic wrap.
smilesnd··on Leaked white paper proposes U.S. Congressional regulation of social media
It is funny to think a capitalist government could regulate anything. If it makes money then it is good. If it doesn't make money then it is bad. If it challenges the current way we make money it is bad, unless it makes more money then the old way then it is good. The problem with social media is it sells its user base to the highest bidder. No sort of regulation is going to stop that. Social media not going to give the government a key to there land. They have lobbyist, secret ninja assassins, black mail, and a endless supply of money to throw at this problem to keep them going strong. What happen when the government try to regulate sugar? Soda companies paid for studies to prove sugar is good for you and is part of a balance diet. What will these social media companies do? For starters they will lie like they currently are stating the technology cannot keep up with fake news. They know when a user gets home they should entice him/her to look at there phone as soon as they walk through there door because they will score a minimal 15 min of eye ball time even if a baby is screaming bloodie murder for them. Machine learning can automate propaganda for entire country, but you telling me it cannot figure out a 1$ bought domain linking to a story for the first time might be fake news? The government will "regulate" social media so they look like they are doing something. The companies will make backdoor deals to benefit them. The american people will cheer with joy knowing there is no more fake news on there social media sites. And when some russian hackers get bored they will buy 10$ worth of ad space on facebook targeting extremist in america. Just so they can gamble what is the best way to get a moron to wave a assault rifle in front of the white house.
smilesnd··on Ask HN: How to get web development career on track from being homeless?
How do you get a address?
smilesnd··on Ask HN: How to get web development career on track from being homeless?
This might sound like a stupid question, but can a homeless person even get a job? Isn't the whole cycle of becoming homeless evil because you need a residents to apply for a job? Just like all those freelance website require you to link a bank account which you need a address to get a bank account.
smilesnd··on Why Coinbase and not Bitcoin will replace Mastercard
I don't think coinbase/bitcoin will replace anything. At best they might get 1% of that market, but they will never be real competition. Besides the technical issues where cryptocurrency cannot keep up with the same demands credit and banks can. Coinbase sits on a razor blade of questionable ethical practices. Reddit and other cryptocurrency forums always have a handful of people asking for help dealing with exchanges(say exchanges because not just coinbase does this) that either fail to transfer funds or funds just go missing over night. The regular response from people is "it is crypto money what you expect?". Saying it is the normal for money to go missing with no recourse just demonstrate the lack of control and power a end user has in this anarchy financial system.
smilesnd··on Pop_OS 18.04: the state of the art in GNU/Linux on desktop
I don't think this really qualifies as a new disto. Maybe should have been named Pobuntu so people would know what they are getting. Wish a desktop focus disto would come out that would make it so people didn't have to feel like sysadmins to use a linux box. Simpler to toss some new paint on someone else work, and call it their own I suppose. I am going to hard pass on this one though stick to my lxde since it does everything I need. Plus I spend 90% of my time in a terminal so icons don't mean much to me.
smilesnd··on Ask HN: Has anyone experienced workplace training that made a difference?
Why my company will only ever write on white boards.
smilesnd··on Ask HN: Has anyone experienced workplace training that made a difference?
True, but miracles do happen. We might find a unicorn in all this.
smilesnd··on Ask HN: Has anyone experienced workplace training that made a difference?
I had a similar situation on a bigger scale. I was once put on a project at a bank where they had to hire more then 100 people in 2 months span. The workforce ended up being made of 80% Chinese people. The best way to describe there English would to say it was rough if they even actually spoke English. They slowly started to pick up certain keywords like strong or efficient or repeat the same sentence to answer questions that sound similar which would sometime come out offensive. My recruiting agency solution to this problem was to have them sign a contract every 2 weeks or so stating which words or sentences they couldn't use any more, or have certain people train them new sentences or words to use so they wouldn't repeatedly show up in reports. It is one of the few training exercise I skip on the regular.
smilesnd··on Ask HN: Has anyone experienced workplace training that made a difference?
Was this management training or "how to be the best you" sort of training?
smilesnd··on Ask HN: Has anyone experienced workplace training that made a difference?
I agree about the CYA measure, but it seems the people that need the training the most are also the ones that never leave.
smilesnd··on Ask HN: Has anyone experienced workplace training that made a difference?
Once and I have a scar from the fork to prove it.
smilesnd··on Ask HN: Reasons to stay in Software Engineering
The interview process sucks, and it probably isn't much better for other careers. I have friends that have master degrees unable to find jobs with no logical way to explain it. Experience and having a good personality isn't a golden ticket to a job.

You really don't need to know a lot. You choose to know a lot probably because you either feel uncomfortable not knowing the whole picture, or because your just curious. I have meet a ton of great developers that their knowledge base was their language and libraries because that was all they needed to know to be great. One guy I know that hires peoples ask one question in interviews to gauge peoples knowledge "You click the address bar of a browser type in www.google.com and push down enter on the keyboard what happens?". There are some people that give 5 min answer and some that could spend a hour just explaining the keyboard interaction with the operating system across 4 different operating systems for a hour. Find what domain you enjoy and just do it.

Everything is "just" something, and their is no way around having to do cumbersome work and making decisions to get some where doing anything.

You should stay in software because you want to. If you need others to validate a reason for you then you probably should get out while you can. Keep it as a hobby, but the second you start questioning something like this you either need to try something new or go on a camping trip and drop some mind altering drugs so you can find a answer. Maybe do some volunteer work in a third world country.

smilesnd··on Ask HN: How did you find your passion?
I found my passion by getting really pissed off. One day I was sitting at my windows xp box and I wanted to do something really stupid/simple. I wanted to change all the icons for a application so it would fit my theme. Long story short I ended up switching to ubuntu learned to program and learned more about operating systems and networking then I ever should have. Now as a software developer I find my passion is driven by being pissed at a problem or situations that I want to control. Twitter tells me I can't do what?? I will write entire library just for that purpose. Windows 10 wants to run what in my background?? I will either figure out a way to change that in the registry, boot it in linux and delete things I shouldn't, or write some script that keeps it in check.
smilesnd··on Ask HN: Low-maintenance alternatives to Gmail?
Competition doesn't equal lower prices.
smilesnd··on Ask HN: What is one Vim trick most people don't know?
'Esc :q' to quit vim seems to be the one trick most people don't know.
smilesnd··on Ask HN: What are the things that you have automated in your personal life?
I bought a kit and made my truck a push to start. Instead of using a wireless key device their is a hidden switch that makes it seem kooler. I also replace the radio with a zero pi that does some neat things. It is controlled over bluetooth from my phone. I also war drive with it and map wifi for fun and some other things.
smilesnd··on Ask HN: Why do managers get paid more than individual contributors?
Because it is the only incentive to make a IC want to change into a manager role. Most of my engineering friends that went from doing interesting things to being manager always reference the need for more money. Specially if they were getting gray hairs or getting their kids ready for college.
smilesnd··on My Teenage Video Game Obsession Wasn't 'Gaming Disorder'
I hate opinion pieces.
smilesnd··on Ask HN: Does Facebook not delete your personal data along with the account?
They make money off you personal data why would they delete their money? Have you ever try to delete your account on something you use on the regular? I had to lie to amazon and tell them my email address was hacked for them to delete my amazon account but they still keep all that data. With vultr a vps provider I had to do the same thing to get my account deleted. This isn't just a facebook issue this is a massive issue where data is worth more then gold.
smilesnd··on Ask HN: Developers, how do you keep SSH and web URLs organized at work?
Like others have said for ssh I just use the config file I have a simple bash script for managing it. I then combine it with alias and other bash/powershell files inside my projects so I don't have to think to hard. For url I have a html file in my projects that links all the needed urls that typically links with my projects config file. So if I change my configs dev I don't have to worry about updating my html as well.

Simple rule of life if you ever do something a second time turn it into a script.
