smhinsey··on Why Retired Aircraft are Stored in the Desert
It seems to me that it's probably a situation similar to the "Ghost Fleet" where there is no real expectation that it can be brought back into service without a fairly significant refit.
smhinsey··on Elon Musk's space ship Dragon 'can land on Mars'
This is pretty close to Mars Direct - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mars_Direct
smhinsey··on Sugar and Health: Interview with UCSF professor Robert Lustig
Did you do this under a doctor's supervision or just on your own?
smhinsey··on Gawker's Traffic Numbers Are Worse Than Anyone Anticipated
I used to work on a high profile old media site, and based on my experience there, I believe that the motivation is that it's easier to game ad metrics with stupid gimmicks this way. Approximately at the time I had lost hope and was looking for an exit, they were working on a new photo gallery that would count each "next" click as a new page impression. In short, it allows you to muddy the water around what exactly constitutes an "impression."
smhinsey··on Ask HN: how to become a morning person?
This has always confused me. I have memories of some vague but very young age of me being put to bed when it was still light outside.
smhinsey··on Peter Thiel Is Wrong About Higher Education (It’s Worse Than A Bubble)
I was one of those types who had a lot of problems with math in primary school because the style of "here are 150 problems for your homework tonight, just like every other night" didn't work with my learning style at all. It took me a long time to overcome this, and while I can't really give an example of this with calculus, I've run into this with other similarly "advanced" mathematical branches such as combinatorics, which comes up in all sorts of CS contexts dealing with trees or similar data structures.
smhinsey··on Settlement in George Hotz Case
I am not sure reasoned justification comes into it. It's football with words and you have to root for your team.
smhinsey··on Don't Reinvent the Wheel
This is my standard MO for learning big new ideas. Say for example I want to use MVC for the first time. Once I think I understand the general idea, I will build my own. I might peak at Rails or Struts or whatever to see how they solve something, but in general I just go my own way. Once I have something to approximately proof of concept level, I feel ready to go out and evaluate existing options with a pretty high level of confidence in my conclusions.
smhinsey··on ASP.NET Deployment Needs To Be Fixed
Do you mean using the *.config transform system, or something else?
smhinsey··on What was John Nash like as a professor?
How valuable is Ask Metafilter by this rubric?
smhinsey··on A message from Comodo Hacker
You'd think someone with the experience of 1,000 project managers would at least have said "this week." Just for some "uh oh" room...
smhinsey··on CEO Friday: Why we don’t hire .NET programmers
I think a great first place for him, or anyone, who actually cares about this, would be to make sure to understand the difference between .NET the framework and the .NET languages. The framework has features at many levels of abstractions, and yes, the higher up you get, the less likely you are to see eye to eye with the developers, but there's always a lower level, and at the bottom, you absolutely can fiddle with the bits on a network connection or whatever else he mentions.
smhinsey··on CEO Friday: Why we don’t hire .NET programmers
I have a hard time taking this seriously beyond the ".NET is a language" statements. I don't think most of his statements really apply to C#, but they certainly don't apply to F#.

This is cargo cult management at its finest. The author is clearly one step above knowing absolutely nothing about this at all. It reads like he got burned by a bad hire and now everyone who shares traits in common with that person is also a bad hire.

smhinsey··on Record Industry: Limewire Could Owe $75 Trillion
You owe the bank $10,000 and don't pay, you have a problem.

You owe the bank $10,000,000 and don't pay, the bank has a problem.

You owe the RIAA $75,000,000,000,000 and don't pay, who has the problem?

This seems like a great example of what I am sure will be an increasingly common problem as more and more laws are written by lobbyists. What do you do when they don't make any sense and were clearly never thought through?

It's so hard to be optimistic about the world in the face of this sort of thing, especially when there are instances of it everywhere you turn.

smhinsey··on "Amazon's EBSs are a barrel of laughs in terms of performance and reliability"
This is totally true, but at the same time, given the success and scale of AWS, it's insane that they would not have the resources they need.
smhinsey··on "Amazon's EBSs are a barrel of laughs in terms of performance and reliability"
For what it's worth, it's not entirely accurate to say that you are always using shared hardware on AWS, at least for your servers. It depends on how you set up your environment.
smhinsey··on Rdio: No REST for the wicked
I am not sure that this is the canonical approach, but the way I did it was to model my search index as the resource. Requesting it with no parameters returned the entire index in its natural sort. Additional parameters filtered/sorted/paged/etc.
smhinsey··on Rdio: No REST for the wicked
Atom has a well-defined way for expressing the content type of items in a feed. You can do this with JSON but you have to come up with your own system.
smhinsey··on Rdio: No REST for the wicked
A search with multiple return types is a good question when the results are JSON, but if the result is something like Atom, it's not really an issue at all because each entity in the resulting feed can contain its own type descriptors. Unfortunately it's since been replaced by a new CMS after I left several years ago, but the search for newsweek.com used to work like this.
smhinsey··on R.I.P. Microsoft Zune. We'll always have the memories...
I was on the edge of getting one for years because it had wireless syncing, but even at its "height" it seemed like a sinking ship.
smhinsey··on AMD needs 1000 Developers with Linux Skills
IBM leaps to mind, but they are old enough that it's probably not a fair comparison.
smhinsey··on Developers: a new kind of IDE arrives in Cloud9 (First look)
I believe this is based on what used to be called Mozilla Bespin. Interesting project to be sure. I'm skeptical overall though.
smhinsey··on Sprint and T-Mobile in merger talks
Yeah, I've used T-Mobile since they were VoiceStream. Before that I used Sprint and I switched because they were such a hassle. Hard to imagine a worse outcome for T-Mobile.
smhinsey··on Are America's best days behind us?
I think until we can get beyond this situation where any sort of modification to the status quo suggested by one side is viewed as an assault on the fundamental way of life by the other, we're in trouble. Right now American politics is essentially a battle of marketing teams, not of ideas, and this is strangling our ability to move forward and to compete.

I mean right now we have people arguing against large infrastructure projects on the basis that they are socialism, or some other vague but evil -ism.

smhinsey··on Review my HTML5 game Freeciv.net again one year later
Same here, and if you try that first and then go into a tutorial, it seems to have the same result.
smhinsey··on If iPads are “post-pc devices” why must I sync with iTunes before I can use one?
No sweat, you're in the clear. On another topic, are you aware of a good leading indicator for storage increases? I can't believe that I am at the stage where 32GB doesn't seem like that much, but here I am.
smhinsey··on Python now uses Mercurial
I was under the impression that they use SourceDepot still, but I could be wrong.
smhinsey··on If iPads are “post-pc devices” why must I sync with iTunes before I can use one?
Yeah, my mistake, I just saw the similar description and figured it was the same model. The Amazon link is the one I ordered. Good looking out though, thanks.
smhinsey··on If iPads are “post-pc devices” why must I sync with iTunes before I can use one?
Thanks, I just ordered one. I have a G2 now, but I've had everything from the G1 to the CLIQ to the MyTouch Slide and it's been really confusing figuring out what microSD will work and what won't.

I don't know what the technical issues are, but I can't wait until you can match the storage of an iPod. I love doubleTwist, and if I could have it just sync everything automatically it would be so ideal, but my collection is way too big, but it fits on the biggest iPod so I end up still carrying both.

smhinsey··on If iPads are “post-pc devices” why must I sync with iTunes before I can use one?
Out of curiosity, how much storage have you been able to get on your Android device?
