smhinsey··on Plot thickens in Airbnb vacation rental horror story
As someone who donated to John Edwards's campaign in 2007, I can sympathize with that scenario.

I don't think it's right, and maybe I have just been in DC too long, but this is how this sort of thing works in the media. I never said they owe an explanation to anyone or anything like that, but people are _clearly_ expecting one. Something set that expectation.

Maybe this makes me juvenile, that's fine.

smhinsey··on Plot thickens in Airbnb vacation rental horror story
Of course it doesn't have anything to do with it directly, I'm talking about the perception created by that sort of story and the coverage it spawned.

If you're on record talking about someone's positive qualities, and they make a mistake, or even are accused of making a mistake, that puts others in a position of expecting you to have a position on it. But they can't really take a public position on it beyond what pg's already said on the matter, and we see what good that did. This is the bind I am talking about.

I don't want them to be in a bind. I have no feelings one way or the other about the matter, really, I am just attempting to offer my point of view on why people are clamoring for YC to be more vocal about this topic.

smhinsey··on Plot thickens in Airbnb vacation rental horror story
Since I'm not sure if this is in response to me or just a general comment, I want to clarify that I don't personally think YC has much room to maneuver and I don't think they should be the ones out in front of the story.

I just think that articles like this one[1] have put them in a bind with respect to this story.

smhinsey··on Plot thickens in Airbnb vacation rental horror story
I think it might have something to do with the articles about how saavy the founders are, how some who passed on it regretted doing so, etc., than purely their involvement as investors. This story does not mesh well with that message.
smhinsey··on The Moment Of Truth For Airbnb As User’s Home Is Utterly Trashed
The other big discussion indicates that the SFPD have already made an arrest. I think it's more about the bell that cannot be un-rung at this point.
smhinsey··on Poll: How much of your work time is typing code?
I do something similar. About 10 years ago or so I decided to force myself into writing the results of that sort of interaction down in a notebook, which forces me to rethink it as I convert it into user stories. This explicit step of recapitulating the same ideas repeatedly has had a lot of positive benefits for me.
smhinsey··on Poll: How much of your work time is typing code?
I try not to start writing code until I am at the point where it's pretty much just typing. It doesn't always work out this way, and it isn't necessarily always the right move, but it forces me to have a really clear mental model of the problem in question before I start committing things to paper (so to speak), which typically saves a refactoring or two down the road.
smhinsey··on John Resig uses this
I feel like a broken record on this issue, but every few weeks I'll get fed up with something about FF and look to see if Chrome finally has a decent port of this and I'm always disappointed. One day, I hope...
smhinsey··on Bill to Require Fiber Optic Cable Friendly Highway Construction
I'm not even going to get into whether they're being honest about it, but when I called to ask about transferring my service to a new apartment, Verizon told me that they'd stopped rolling out FIOS to new locations because they didn't have the fiber for it.

I kind of just assumed that it was the prelude to asking for more money, but it seems like there's likely some truth to it.

smhinsey··on Poll: Do you use Google Reader on a daily basis?
Hah, now all you're missing is a feature to erase 6 years of muscle memory and habit to always immediately check Reader.
smhinsey··on Poll: Do you use Google Reader on a daily basis?
Excellent, thanks, I think that would probably do it. I was thinking specifically of that screen you'll see that lets you choose whether to add something to Reader or your home page.
smhinsey··on Poll: Do you use Google Reader on a daily basis?
Wow, this is pretty excellent. Is there an easy way to subscribe to things similar to how Reader works?
smhinsey··on Poll: Do you use Google Reader on a daily basis?
Hm, thanks, I'll check that out. I'll probably still hit the site directly, but it'd be nice to have that archive in my account.
smhinsey··on Poll: Do you use Google Reader on a daily basis?
Thanks, that does look useful. It might be a good way to follow some low traffic subreddits without subscribing to them.

My main beef, however, is less with the content of the feed per se and more with the fact that they are in a fixed order, so you lose the curation aspect of voting.

smhinsey··on Poll: Do you use Google Reader on a daily basis?
Yeah, I'd settle for a high quality search within reader itself, realizing that integration into the main search might be impossible.

I find it really confusing that the "Share" link in Reader still goes to Buzz, which is sort of associated with my G+ profile but not quite, in that it doesn't seem that people who are in my circles are necessarily able to see them.

smhinsey··on Poll: Do you use Google Reader on a daily basis?
It's been basically my primary portal to the internet since it came out. Other than HN and reddit, which don't really produce super useful feeds, I don't really browse any sites directly anymore. I have always been looking for the next big thing to replace it, since there hasn't been a tremendous amount of effort put into it lately, but nothing has compared.

The feature that I have been sort of daydreaming about is the ability to use your subscriptions to weight your search results so that sites you've subscribed to are ranked higher.

smhinsey··on Twice the height of the Empire State - massive solar tower for AZ
It's pretty unlikely, but fun to think that they might be planning on pulling something similar to the Chrysler Building.

smhinsey··on If I had a Billion Dollars
I didn't say that they were. The fact that a single well chosen asteroid can represent ~5 times the annual global output of a given metal is a nice side effect which happens to make the whole thing financially viable. The goal is to bootstrap the industrialization of space as a prelude to the establishment of permanent colonies throughout the solar system.
smhinsey··on If I had a Billion Dollars
$950 million towards capturing a resource rich asteroid and bringing it into some kind of useful orbit near Earth. This would break down into 5 major areas, in no particular order.

- Identifying candidate targets. We need to find the right mixture of mass, composition, orbit, and location. This likely has both observational and unmanned probe components.

- Intercept system. We need a system capable of intercepting the asteroid and placing a propulsion system on or near the surface.

- Return propulsion. The requirement is low power and long running. This might be an ion engine like VASIMIR or even more exotic tech like a solar sail or a gravity tractor.

- Return approach. We need a safe way to put this in a location where the resources can actually be utilized without terrorizing the world.

- Rockets. A big chunk of this money would go into simply paying to get things into orbit, and once in orbit, on its way out into the solar system.

My general sense is that a lot of the bits and pieces of this technology are already in place, but there are still significant gaps and a tremendous amount of integration work.

$40 million towards making sure this effort survives. I don't necessarily expect it to be complete any time soon, maybe even until after I'm dead. This might take the form of an endowment of some kind, lobbying, or seeking further investment. I doubt this would be enough money, but I think it's in the ballpark, especially if SpaceX, or something like, it really takes off.

$10 million for personal expenses so I don't have to worry about anything else.

smhinsey··on Tesla Motors inks $100M deal with Toyota
This was pretty specifically anti-union behavior, although obviously nothing was done that would generate any paper trail. I am sure there was some exaggeration due to human nature, but it is basically an open secret that large non-union shops will do just about anything to prevent unions from forming.

It may be different for line employees, the people I knew worked skilled trades, electrician, hvac, etc.

smhinsey··on Tesla Motors inks $100M deal with Toyota
I've never worked for one, but it wasn't an ideological thing. If you worked with people for more than 6 months or so, you'd get your team broken up. If management found out that you were friends with a group of coworkers and were getting together outside of work, you'd get reassigned so none of you were working together. It was the harassment to prevent people from unionizing that that made it a bad working environment.

I totally agree, it's a disaster. I feel the same way about GridMove, which is the best thing I've been able to find for managing multiple windows on a big display. For some reason, the syntax for defining the grids is so opaque to me that whenever I look at it I feel like I'm trying to read in a dream.

By the way, you can definitely remove those buttons. I don't remember how, but I do remember thinking it took far too long to find the setting to disable them.

smhinsey··on A pound of flesh: how Cisco's "unmitigated gall" derailed one man's life
A winning long term strategy, to be sure.
smhinsey··on A pound of flesh: how Cisco's "unmitigated gall" derailed one man's life
This is part of a pretty disturbing general trend of large corporations using the criminal justice system as if it were an extension of themselves. I honestly don't see how anyone at Cisco who signed off on this sleeps at night.
smhinsey··on New DVCS with integrated bug tracking and scrum metrics
I still can't quite wrap my head around what it means for a DVCS to have exclusive locks. It seems like either the locks aren't exclusive or the system isn't distributed.

Edit: this kind of covers it: http://veracity-scm.com/qa/questions/102/why-would-you-desig...

I guess upstream is somehow aware of all downstream repos and can communicate with them outside of push-type operations?

You might want to check out ActualMultipleMonitors as well. It adds some features that I don't believe Ultramon has yet, such as the ability to have a completely functional taskbar on your secondary, complete with its own start button and notification area/clock/etc.

I didn't need this feature until I started running multiple 30''s, but now that I am it's invaluable.

smhinsey··on Lion's Mission Control: UX fail, especially for multiple displays
I understand. My main machine has a multimonitor setup with 30'' displays and I have not found anything that can manage the space effectively (pardon the pun) short of xmonad, which I unfortunately can't use for my day job.

I didn't post that comment to you, it was more of a general comment to anyone reading the thread who might think "hey, I hate this thing too, but for different reasons!" Like I said, I expected not to like it at all myself for unrelated reasons to yours.

smhinsey··on Lion's Mission Control: UX fail, especially for multiple displays
I just thought it would be useful to point out, in a conversation about Mission Control, that if you don't like it, you can disable it.
smhinsey··on Lion's Mission Control: UX fail, especially for multiple displays
Indeed, but it is not Mission Control.
smhinsey··on Lion's Mission Control: UX fail, especially for multiple displays
I personally think Mission Control is pretty excellent, but then, I am running Lion on an Air without an external display. For that use case, Mission Control and the iOS-style features are both significantly more useful than I had any expectation of them being.

You can replace Mission Control with Expose via the preferences, although I'm not sure if it has inherited any of these changes the linked post complains about or if it is in fact the old Expose.
