smel··on Google Gemini has the worst LLM API
This happen when you have 200k employees competing internally more than with outside competition.

smel··on Man ran 700 miles to make 'insanely impressive' art on GPS fitness app

smel··on Llama3 implemented from scratch
The solution to agi is not deep learning maybe with more compute and shit load of engineering it can work kind of baby agi.

My bet will be on something else than gradient descent and backprop but really I don't wish any company or country to reach agi or any sophisticated ai ...

smel··on “Meta spent almost as much as the Manhattan Project on GPUs in today's dollars”
Meta open sourcing LLama is just like Google open source Kubernetes to counter AWS dominance.
smel··on Philosophus Autodidactus
I read the original version several times when I was young ... The kid has been raised by an animal through observation, guessing and experimentation he cames to some discoveries and conclusions about life, death, elements of the universe, god ... he even become vegans and eat only falling fruits because he thought animal and plants are sentient just like humans but with different degrees of sophistication ...

Ibn Tufail is very famous in my country we have several schools, universities, hospitals in his name

smel··on Autodoc: Toolkit for auto-generating codebase documentation using LLMs
you're wrong it can be extremely useful
smel··on $22B project to provide 8% of UK energy via undersea cable from North Africa
This is really sad for an university publication got written by freelance journalist with clearly biased views on issues beyond his shallow understanding
smel··on Better to micromanage than be disengaged
I hate micro management usually because they're more worried about slack time than building value is neither good for employee neither for shareholders

as employee I optimize "work rate" for value output as shareholder I optimize spending for profit

In real life of software building value output is decoupled from "work rate" for other professions like factory where quantity and quality are metrics easily measured then value output can be coupled with work rate.

If the job is task oriented why bother having employees just pay per task but maintaining and evolving software is not task oriented even some structures consider software engineers as transpilers of (bad written) user stories :)

Because the transpiling part is gone in few years LLM will do it better than any average programmer

smel··on Ask HN: Are you boycotting Qatar World Cup?
No, of course not why should I boycott Qatar ? Is Qatar responsible for death of millions of innocents like US or Europe ? Is Rainbow propaganda should now be universal truth ? and imposed on other culture s ? Should Sport become a political arena now ?

No sorry I will not boycott Qatar World Cup

smel··on Ask HN: Has anyone managed to find enjoyment in their work after burnout?
When it comes to health and well being f*ck what's appropriate do whatever you can get away with ... just do not put life or well being of other people in harm ways

smel··on Spain to launch modest trial of four-day working week
I left my job and created a software consulting company two years ago just to be able to work 3/4 day per week it turns out to be more profitable than my previous jobs. I kept even a smaller salary. My company has enough funds to pay my salary for 4 years without working or revenue. The more this number is bigger the more I become happy. I'm trying also to build products to have more revenue streams (no success so far)
smel··on Why we are suing the Administration
I think every country should ban foreign companies so we can have only national internet ? there is no need for global US companies taking over the world. Nobody trust China and nobody should trust US companies anyway. I live in the supposed "free world" there is no such thing. All over the world there is two classes : dominants and dominated

So please don't be so small minded bringing this "free world" propaganda terms here...

Peace

smel··on Spending $5k to put Zimbabwe on Street View
Back in 2014, a Moroccan guy did something similar, created a Street view clone for a 10 cities in Morocco huge challenge for one person, with limited resources: http://carte.ma/
smel··on The Ant Design Christmas Egg That Went Wrong
Even if I'm pissed off with this particular incident since I was working on a project using this great library and I was scared by the little snowy button :) ... but I agree with you those people are doing it for fun. I used too but lost interrest in working for free. A lot of companies are making a ton of money using (among many others) my OSS project. Even my current employer (big if not biggest European software vendor) is using it on a major product they're selling for millions the funny thing is that they don't even know and prohabiting employees to work on open source even in their own free time.

This particular experience make me understand that working for free on open source is really a foolish idea. I was tempted by changing the license but since there are many others using it to build their business I thought it's better to just keep it as it is by respect to early adopters and users which any project is nothing without them.

For a healthy open source project the work needed it's not fun at least for me, it's not just about hacking/problem solving/design, you need actually to do issues triage, answer questions, documentation, extensive testing (with whole infrastructure for builds/releases/communication) those are not fun activities and in most cases done better than paid softwares (because people are passionate about their projects) and in addition to that I need to work fulltime on different (shitty) things to pay the bills and have time for familly ...

smel··on Arabic, a great language, has a low profile
you're right ! and a little bit biased because pronunciation is important for all languages out there I see the same issue with french foreign speakers too.

In Arabic pronunciation is straight forward, in english pronunciation depends on each word (a,u,o) can have a different sounds (depends in which word used) and the emphasis also is a dark magic :D there are no such exceptions in Arabic

Arabic can be difficult but simple. English can be easy but complex.

smel··on Arabic, a great language, has a low profile
Good catch ! Thank you
smel··on Arabic, a great language, has a low profile
I'm native arabic speaker too, and can tell you that your statement is far from the truth. Arabic is far more simple language with fewer exceptions than english or french (I love/speak french :D).

There are only 3 tenses: Also it's derivational language which mean once you learn about a verb you actually learn about the whole lexical family of the verb.

In english for example you have : Book, Author, Library In Arabic (kitaab, kaatib, maktaba) which is the same root (k,t,b) and with simple rules you can discover all those words or even invent them if not used previously The big problem of arabic as language is arabic societies/people/... but the language itself is a gem.

smel··on Ask HN: Should developers maintains Open Source projects for free?
Exactly no problem if paid by someone but should not be unpaid job.

When companies open source stuff are not for the greater good they do it because of economics. Just like in a bar when you get free salty nuts that help you drink more :D

smel··on Ask HN: GDPR for CMS SaaS app?
Both I think you're responsible for your scope and also customers if they have access to APIs or export feeds.

Any data about final users should be available and controlled via consentement mgt ui

smel··on Lobe – Deep Learning Made Simple
Great job ! any information about pricing ?
smel··on Parsing JSON is a Minefield
It's inevitable, nothing is perfect ... there is only popular things that everyone complains about and things that nobody cares about :D

We're not machines we're more comfortable with messy and forgiving systems.

Do you want to build successful products? be liberal on input and conservative on output. You need to reduce entropy and give people a feeling of magic. It's when you're old and have enough scars on your skin when you learn to hate magic and become control freak :D

smel··on What is an MVP for a B2B startup?
> friends and family round ? Are you kidding ? not everybody is privileged to have family or friends with money to invest.
smel··on Elements of Clojure
Really brillant !
smel··on Ask HN: Will JavaScript take over front-end?
Since used React 3 years ago (and specially Reagent/ClojureScript) can't ever look back, the only possible better way is Elm mainly because of compile time checks (but right now ClojureScript is too much superior)

This is just a personal story ! I don't want to offend anyones believes :)
