smcguinness··on Show HN: Autocode – Automatically generate API code for SaaS apps
Very cool.

I just signed up, but was a bit frustrated by the hijacked experience for sign-up as it broke my LastPass plugin to generate and save my password. Just wanted to point this out.

smcguinness··on Minnesota Will Pay Residents to Grow Bee-Friendly Lawns
Yes. However, it isn't really a colony or hive. I actually had my first bee house this summer (in Texas) in hopes of pollinating my apple tree (spoiler - it worked).

I bought 40 Mason bee larva from https://masonbeesforsale.com around March and around May I found some reeds in my bee house filled with mud (meaning they had created their nest). It was a fun experiment and at no time did I feel like bees were swarming. If anything, they actually left my yard an pollinated my neighbors plants.

smcguinness··on Launch HN: Carry (YC S19) – We Book Travel for You on Slack
Take a look at https://www.skyscanner.com. They have a "cheapest month" feature. All you have to do is choose your destination.

To see it, choose your flight then in the date pop-up choose Whole Month -> Cheapest Month.

I believe they also have the inverse where you can choose a month and a departure city and they'll give you destinations by price. I couldn't find it quickly though but I think they have it.

smcguinness··on Minnesota Will Pay Residents to Grow Bee-Friendly Lawns
I mentioned in a child but I wanted to point out there are different species of bees. Solitary bees are growing in popularity and offer more effective pollination than the tradition honey bee and are non-(or less)aggressive.

smcguinness··on Minnesota Will Pay Residents to Grow Bee-Friendly Lawns
If your humanity is intrigued then take a look at Solitary bees many are either stingless or less aggressive by nature of not being hive driven. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bee#Solitary_and_communal_bees

smcguinness··on Show HN: A tool that helps you focus on startup metrics that matter
Put up an example board of all the metrics that a user will see prior to them needing to sign-up.

I'm not sure if the design is an all or nothing approach - meaning PH, Stripe, and GA are required, but if there is the ability to position the metric views on boards, having an example for users to look at or even themes based on type of products would be interesting.

smcguinness··on The Strange Persistence of First Languages (2015)
This really speaks to my own experiences as well, but I'm thankful to have begun my path to relearn my native language earlier than she had. There really is something really empowering about speaking in your first language. I absolutely love the line where she says that what appears to be quirks and oddities of one's family in the Anglophone world are fully accepted in the homeland.

There shouldn't even be a debate between people who approve of reversing aging and those who do not. Whoever doesn't approve... when the treatment will finally be available... just don't use it! I'll use my freedom of decision and my money to extend my life, thank you! If you want to die, go ahead.

smcguinness··on Deep work in practice: reimagining my workflow for radically less distraction
I recently had to go through the process of "re-learning how to work." I didn't realize how bad I was at deep work, as the article references it as, until I quit my job and set out on my own full-time.

I found that I was replacing the normal interruptions of the office - meetings, email, phone calls, lunch; with getting distracted on social media, general reading, checking alerts, etc. It was like my brain was conditioned to expect a distraction and thus made me seek it out.

It took some effort, but making sure I am organized for the week has really helped as I know what I need to get done. Also, I've now been able to use my "distracted level" as a litmus test of how organized I am. I know when I'm not focused as much as I should, I need to spend some time on my planning.

edit: grammar

They turned 4 & 2 while we were there.
smcguinness··on Ask HN: Did some of you try the digital nomad lifestyle and not like it?
Completely agree. It was hard to have an extended relationship with anyone. It isn't like being at camp where you will see that person every day. If you aren't a place for an extended amount of time, it can be limited to hanging out only a handful of times.

I wouldn't say I got "tired of it", but when the time came to come home and I thought about it, I realized how exhausted I was. Even though we felt like we took it easy, it was physically & mentally draining. I think the excitement masked it, potentially artificially, where I just didn't know I was so exhausted, but was. I've tried to think of things which might have been impacted by that.

smcguinness··on Ask HN: Did some of you try the digital nomad lifestyle and not like it?
I just got back from 6 months traveling Europe and working. I traveled with my Wife and two small children. No regrets and now that we are back (for a while), I'm ready to do it all over again. No matter how many photos of friends/acquaintances who have done it and their always smiling photos - its still real life. Not every day is rainbows and butterflys.

Routine (as others have stated) in very important to define. If you are traveling with others, it needs to be expressed as soon as possible and if at all possible, define the items which might allow you the chance to break it. When traveling, so so so many opportunities will come up that will test your resolve to sticking to the routine.

Try staying places for longer stints. We averaged about 3 weeks at each place we stayed. This allowed us to stretch out the activities over time and not feel guilty about sticking to the routine or letting the kids just chill. It doesn't have to be 'go go go' all the time.

If you know where you are going to stay, spend some time figuring out where you are going to work before you get there. For me, it was hard to work at our flat/apt/house because the kids knew I was there and wanted to hang out with me because it was great having me around - compared to before we left having the normal 9-6 work schedule. It isn't always easy finding a place that has good internet, seating, and won't kick you out for hanging out all day on a couple cups of coffee. Coworking places are in most major cities, but hours can be limiting and they aren't always around the corner.
