smcguinness··on $15MM startup fund launched in West Michigan
Rules are that you have to have a Michigan, LLC to receive it and do a presentation 60-90 days later. Sounds like anyone can do it, just have to buy the plane ticket there to present. No obligation to be at their location or have a "office" in Michigan.
smcguinness··on Let's hack television by getting rid of all commercials
I always had the idea to do the reverse of what Shazam is doing with commercials now. Offer a feature to where you take a fingerprint of commercials and are able to fast forward through them. Obviously, Shazam has a bigger market of offering value add to advertisers.
smcguinness··on Show HN: Cloudeo.tv - Live video and voice for developers
Site is nice, except I don't see any way to get started. It says it is for "developers", but don't see any documentation, APIs or anything like that.
smcguinness··on Ask HN: How to handle customers that I lose money on?
This is the process that I am leaning towards. Changing my pricing means that it affects all users when all I want to "fix" is the few that impact my bottom line in a negative way. I think I've come up with a rolling average of "over use" which will then cause a polite email to be delivered to them indicating the issue and how we can remedy the situation.
smcguinness··on Just how big are porn sites?
Unless I'm reading this wrong, YouTube stores their videos in MySQL. http://highscalability.com/blog/2012/3/26/7-years-of-youtube...
smcguinness··on Ask HN: About Us/Team Pages
The arc90 one stood out to me as the best. Borrowed the concept of roles and turned this out. http://www.call-em-all.com/About/team.aspx
smcguinness··on Code-free Website Tour Builder
Looks good. Loving the uses of bootstrap theme. Check out Guider too. https://github.com/jeff-optimizely/Guiders-JS
smcguinness··on Ask HN: How to hack after Marriage
That is great advice and I can say that sticking to it can be hard and if done does prove to making hacking while married not all that stressful on the relationship.

I'm now moving on to the hacking with a child phase. First due in July. Not sure what my hacking schedule is going to be yet, but I'm sure it is going to be much more abbreviated . But I'm hoping that will keep me better focused during those times that I am.

smcguinness··on House passes JOBS Act. What the new crowdfunding bill means for startups
I'm excited about the chance to get in on secondary markets as a way to get started into the start up investing game. So I hope that it does.
smcguinness··on House passes JOBS Act. What the new crowdfunding bill means for startups
It passed the house and I believe it now goes to the Senate and on to Obama to sign.
smcguinness··on House passes JOBS Act. What the new crowdfunding bill means for startups
So does this mean I no longer have to be an accredited investor to purchase shares on companies?
smcguinness··on WebAPI or WCF?
WebAPI is about to be merged into the new MVC 4 release.

Announcement: http://wcf.codeplex.com/discussions/319671 MVC4: http://www.asp.net/mvc/mvc4

smcguinness··on Ask HN: Any good tutorials on iOS geofences?
They seem to have created what they call "profiles" which allow for less battery usage based on what data needs to be gathered.

You might also go and reach out to some of the fitness apps like RunKeeper and MapMyRun to see how they are handling their real-time geo pushes without killing the battery. Good luck.

smcguinness··on API to get realtime data of Gold and Silver
While yes, that seems to be the case and would be smart for them to charge in the future to maintain the service. Unless the product is already mature, I'd say take advantage of a free offering while you can and until your are profitable enough to pay for a service. Can't imagine there are any 'real-time' offerings for market data. Companies like Bloomberg, Thomson Reuters, etc, etc wouldn't exist in the financial sectors if there was.

With regards to market quotes, latency is where companies like that compete. Good luck with your product or app.

smcguinness··on API to get realtime data of Gold and Silver
Found this - https://secure.futureprice.com/

Also, more options by searching http://www.programmableweb.com/apis/directory/1?apicat=Finan....

Other option is to do "real-time" scraping. MarketWatch and Yahoo have pretty good data feed to consume.

smcguinness··on Sample App with Backbone.js and Twitter Bootstrap
Would you point out a few of them if you don't mind?
smcguinness··on SendHub (YC W12) Lets Businesses Text Their Customers, Teachers Text For Free
As you said, there are a ton of niche companies that handle this. Just look at the attendee list at the Bar & Nightclub show in Las Vegas. I work for a company that provides a similar service, but we have a short code and work directly with the carriers. Lots of competition and not a whole lot of margin if you don't have the volume drive cost down. Good luck to the, but free isn't going to last too long.
smcguinness··on Building trello.com for multiple devices
Huge fan of the service and have enjoyed reading about the stack and other insight on how Trello came to be. Keep that Up.

Quick question about how you are handling security for your API. Are you using a 2-leg OAuth setup for your web requests? How do you handle the security of having the "secret" in the code?

smcguinness··on Make a Donation to Help Reduce the US Public Debt. Wait, What?
I just bookmarked this. They need to have something like this added to tax forms. I'd much rather 'donate' my money to the debt than the Presidential election fund or whatever other things they ask if I'd like to contribute to.
smcguinness··on Show HN: Weekend Project - Monthly Startup T-shirt Subscription
It is http://www.startupschwag.com/ that did this before right? I believe they did shirts and other stuff in a monthly shipment. Can't remember the price.
smcguinness··on Ask HN: Anyone working on something in the Senior-Care market?
I'll have our biz dev guy follow up with you. He'll know more about how the senior industry uses us exactly as well as having more input of additional potential uses within that industry.
smcguinness··on Ask HN: Anyone working on something in the Senior-Care market?
I work at http://www.call-em-all.com. We have many senior care facilities that use us for automated notifications regarding health, medication, etc. We also work with many healthcare staffing companies which staff for in-home caregivers.
smcguinness··on Comcast cuts off customer for going over 250GB of legitimate use
Many state utility commissions require multiple notifications written & verbal prior to turning off service.
smcguinness··on Spotify coming to the U.S. soon. For real this time?
Wonder how Pandora feels about this?
smcguinness··on Sticker Mule is back on AppSumo for 1 day only
This time the deal seems to be working. Sticker Mule was kind enough to give me the deal last week at the promoted price. Well done Sticker Mule. Looking forward to my order shipping soon.
smcguinness··on Microsoft to acquire Skype
My hope for this deal is that Microsoft partners with CLEAR (or any nationwide data provider) to create a VOIP Windows Phone.
smcguinness··on Ask HN: Where do you buy your startup's tshirts?
I've wanted to rekindle "Startup Schwag" as I didn't get to get on it for very long prior to its close down.
smcguinness··on Passing the torch. FeaturedUsers.com is for sale.
I don't think this model has been banned. Isn't it services like ad.ly who are paying users to tweet out ads. FeaturedUsers is a service that is like an adwords model which allows people to advertise their Twitter account.
