smaslennikov··on Man 'refused entry into US' as border control catch him with bald JD Vance meme
A mad coincidence - I caught that as well.
smaslennikov··on Framework Laptop with Ubuntu Review
I have a batch one Framework laptop with the i7-1185G7. Overall, I absolutely love it, but it didn't come easy.

1. Ubuntu 21.10 had horrid support of the hardware. Eventually switching to Fedora 35 fixed most bugs

2. The DisplayPort expansion card I received was faulty and sometimes caused horrible performance.

3. EMI shields were incorrectly placed on my expansion slots[^1]. Eventually I simply removed them to get full performance back.

In the end, after months of tweaking and talking to support, I got a new DisplayPort card, switched to Fedora 35 and everything works smoothly.

smaslennikov··on The strangely difficult problem of drawing a box around text
I had a lot of trouble wrapping my head around this years ago:

smaslennikov··on No meetings, no deadlines, no full-time employees
This is actually a business style I worked on describing[1], but it wasn't well received[2].

smaslennikov··on GitHub is fully available in Iran
You make a good point, I'm surprised to see it downvoted.

It's always a risk to put IP in a bucket you may lose access to just because of politics.

smaslennikov··on What comes after Git?
I'm surprised Phabricator hasn't been mentioned. I haven't used it much, but it's rather huge in some circles.
smaslennikov··on Ask HN: What did you purchase that measurably improved your quality of life?
Automated cat infrastructure: automatic USB water fountain[0], food dispenser[1], Litter Robot 3[2] (as of recently, with a homebrew controller[3]).

These allow me a good four days of absence from the house - for camping or whatever else. Doesn't happen often that both the wife and I are MIA, but when it does, these things are indespensable.

smaslennikov··on Police-issued "courtesy cards" help friends and family out of minor infractions
Pretty confused why this post got flagged, but I did put together a (strong) personal opinion a while back[^0] that touches on these topics. I didn't publish it because a friend gave me a counter opinion I couldn't find a time to respond to, but I suppose it might as well be public now.

smaslennikov··on Caltrain Vibration and Volatility Analysis
I'm interested in the controls for this analysis, which I didn't notice in the article. Might've missed them.

I'm mainly talking about how the device was mounted - because if it's simply kept on person, a lot of this vibration is muffled, right?

smaslennikov··on Ask HN: Does old concrete reveal information about air quality?
While water attracts everything around it and holds it nearby when frozen, I don't believe concrete has similar characteristics. More knowledgeable HNers will have a more thorough comments, I'm sure.
smaslennikov··on Ask HN: How Do You Read?
My recent innovation was using a notecard as a bookmark, and writing on it page numbers and begginning word of excerpts I'll take down to my notebook later on. This way, it's still portable, I don't dmaage the book, and I'm able to take notes.
smaslennikov··on People Simply Empty Out (1986)
I think a difference of purpose is to be mentioned here. Not all people are the same, some strive for different aspects of life than others.

Using your example, some seek family, a close social circle, a white-picket-fence life. There's nothing wrong with that, but another group seeks relative solitude, doesn't see a purpose in creating a family or having a nice house, and fills some kind of intellectual hole, be it with creative writing, or relatively non-conformist research.

My point is, I don't see Bukowski as one who lacks empathy, rather, someone who follows his own purpose, though, potentially blind to some others' happiness doing other things.

Lastly, the workforce ethics back then were quite different from today's. It's my understanding that the pay was significantly lower compared to costs of living while progressing in ranks was near impossible without a degree.

smaslennikov··on Security researcher MalwareTech pleads guilty
Public defenders are far from sufficient in cases of above-minimal complexity. An interesting article on the subject: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/01/31/us/public-def...
smaslennikov··on Intel Exiting 5G Modems
Surely due to the recently top post on HN: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=19674218
smaslennikov··on Federal HTTPS domains that'll expire soon because of US government shutdown
My favourite part is that some of these sites are effectively blocked by chrome due to HSTS (e.g. manufacturing.gov), which renders them unusable for most.

smaslennikov··on When devops makes a clock
Not at all, there's just a delay for when it builds the page. For regular use cases, this isn't an issue.

smaslennikov··on When devops makes a clock
Actually, we could just run `git commit --amend` every time and then force push. That brings troubles if I ever make other changes on another pooter though
