smashing··on Yesterday, I Went to the American Idol for Startups. It Made Me Want to Die.
I believe its called jargon. MBA's do tend to document jargon more than other professions, but every job has them.
smashing··on Ex-Goldman Programmer Is Arrested Again
The employer owns the copyrights, patents, etc. Just like a journalist can take articles or emails from a former employer, neither can scientists take materials from a work-for-hire position.
smashing··on SCO is finally “Dead Parrot” dead
First, SCO. Next, Apple.
smashing··on SCO is finally “Dead Parrot” dead
Nope. Apple.
smashing··on What happened to LendInk? The owner responds.
The fact is that authors just don't understand that they are needed less. There is a transformation from printing on dead trees to the freedom that the Internet gives people without copy restrictions. Its cheaper to build a computer network than it is too print a book in many places!
smashing··on John Schappert, Zynga COO, Resigns
Oddly, the clone is modeled after a COO from another company.
smashing··on You Either Die A Hero Or You Become The Villain
These are all the same things that people wrote back when Myspace was the 800 pound gorilla of social networking. Having expressed that, I think app.net's funding methodology sucks for a direct delivery to customer project.
smashing··on Monsanto awarded $1b due to patent on never shipped product
Since the patent is the property, there is therefore no need for a market.
smashing··on Lon Seidman gets YouTube takedown notice for public domain video from NASA
Are you suggesting licensing penalties for content owners?
smashing··on What Facebook Knows
I remember on Myspace I had a lot of friends who were "99 years old". These sites are really about establishing a presence to sell artistic goods. The rest is kinda silly. Who has time to fill out Facebook like some sort of questionnaire? Its not the census, so their is no penalty for inaccurate information.
smashing··on What Facebook Knows
Am I the only one who sees most of my Friends on Facebook filling out junk information. I have two kids, a wife, and no sibling on Facebook, but in reality those are just acquaintances, I have lots of siblings, but no wife, nor kids. Most of the people I interact with on Facebook do something similar. Fake occupations, etc. etc.
smashing··on MakeGamesWithUs (YC W12) Wants To Turn High School Kids Into iOS Game Developers
Try Android. It is a much larger platform and much more affordable for teens.
smashing··on Introducing Amazon Game Studios
That http://games.amazon.com/ is tied into Facebook apps and not the Amazon Fire[1] really shows the commitment to their own platform.

smashing··on Mobile SEO for Beginners: How to Improve App Store Search Ranking
Developers will soon turn to Google Play and the Amazon App Store which offers much better customer service.
smashing··on X11 and the disturbing trend of Apple removing functionality from OS X
Same thing happened to me. I looked for XQuartz after the ML upgrade on my hard drive and found that it had not been uninstalled. So I ran Gimp and it requested XQuartz be installed and opened the download page. I downloaded and installed it, then I attempted to open Gimp again. The program then requested the location of XQuartz and I identified it under Utilities and Gimp started running.

Go ahead and open a bug report. I don't that this is expected behavior.

smashing··on "It’s done in hardware so it’s cheap"
I don't know if tragedy is the right word for this. We live in an era where the marketplace has more of an effect on the trends in computing than academia. Nothing tragic about that.
smashing··on I've inherited 200K lines of spaghetti code—what now?
Two words: Bath Salts.
smashing··on Appigo Is Threatening To Sue Android Apps For Using The Word "ToDo"
The submitter's obvious intent was to get comments on the blog.
smashing··on Dear Mark Zuckerberg
Except that it won't, i.e. Microsoft in the 90's and Apple on the iOS/Mac platform. Businesses will follow the markets which have the greatest opportunity to turn over profit. In fact Microsoft used to call their relationship an "ecosystem" because like a predator they would gobble up or crush the smaller players.
smashing··on Ask HN: Recommendations for learning and improving UX/UI skills?
Who trained the trainers? Hint: They were probably self-taught.
smashing··on Founders Are Not Heroes. Let’s Get Back To Work.
Thanks for the link. It inspired me to add to my /etc/hosts file: 127.0.0.1 techcrunch.com www.techcrunch.com

I can't remember the last time I read something useful or interesting from that site, but if others get good PR, freelance work, or gain some insight, then good for them.

smashing··on Ask HN: Is anyone building Apps on Gmail
OK, thanks! I was looking to build something that combined gmail and craigslist. Haven't seen anything thus far.
smashing··on When Craigslist Blocks Innovations
"...they[Craigslist] charged users to use a megaphone to announce that they were selling something."

I don't get where you came up with that. It wasn't in the article at all.

smashing··on Vimwiki
I wonder if there is a phone out there that just boots into a minimal android software stack with a Vim interface to the typical phone features, calling, texting, notes, etc. Touchscreen with a physical keyboard would make this the ultimate hacker tool.
smashing··on The Web Is Unsustainable
It is funny that http://www.shanehudson.com/ is the AdvoCare site, same as http://www.advocare.com/ registered on: 22-Jul-95(1), and shanehudson.com was registered on 10-Mar-2001(2). His site, shanehudson.net, has been registered since 26 Oct 2007 17:12:02(3), yet the following domain names are still available shanehudson.org, shanehudson.info, shanehudson.biz, shanehudson.us, etc.

Maybe the Web will become unsustainable when those domain names are registered.

smashing··on Mvl
I actually like the red and black. It is powerful and direct, but probably won't appeal to all sensibilities. Good luck.
smashing··on Plagiarism Haunts Europe
I don't know if the culture which punishes those caught plagiarism more harshly than the others tends to have any long term advantages, but I can only hope so since I live in the US. This really needs a double blind test given the overwhelming potential for bias. Maybe, this will one day be a new field of study in academia: Economics of Plagiarism 101.
smashing··on Apple uses Amazon AWS when receiving attachments from the new Messages app
Apple already uses AWS and Azure for iCloud, so this makes sense. "Apple has selected Microsoft's Azure and Amazon's AWS to jointly host its iCloud service" http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/09/02/icloud_runs_on_micro...
smashing··on Samsung Outsells iPhone, Breaks Shipping Records
Both Apple(1) and Samsung(2) appear release the source code for their products, so it is amazing in a way that the two market leaders in mobile are so open.
