smarri··on Ask HN: Share your personal site
This made me smile :)

"Good artists copy; great artists steal.

- JAREK LUPINSKI"

smarri··on Tell HN: Crypto/web3 grifters are Now AI/ML grifters
"One guy proposed my friend that he has a startup idea to use GPT-model to let people talk to their pets and that it should be 'fairly easy' to finetune from an existing model."

- haha this is hilarious!!

A younger me once thought, like the person who pitched that to your friend, that all I needed was an idea (..and if only I could find someone to build it...I'd be a huge success!!) and as I matured and got experience in the world, I realised that ideas are cheap and execution is hard. We need more doers! I'm a reformed ideas guy.

smarri··on Ask HN: I'm a PM, and I want to go back to coding
I knew a newspaper journalist in his late 30s / early 40s who became a developer, and by the time I met him he was a senior developer and highly respected in the team and business. He was working at a tech 'scaleup' who were valued at +£2bn and that had been around for c.10 years. I think given your a PM and already in tech, it shouldn't be a problem. I'd use the fact you were a PM to your advantage.
smarri··on Going full time on my SaaS after 13 years
Congratulations!
smarri··on Ask HN: Which videogames are worth playing in 2023?
Mario Kart :)
smarri··on Hogmanay
Inverleith Park? Great view
smarri··on Biggest challenge(s) working remotely? What needs improved?
Hybrid meetings with some people being remote and others in person needs improved. Currently, I think it's much better just to have the meeting remote or in person, doing both is worse than either.
smarri··on Ask HN: What makes a great movie theater experience?
Braindump : Large comfortable seats, like sofas. Good range of food, hot and cold. Ease of ticket purchase, ideally online in advance, but a fast customer journey. Bathrooms large enough to service everyone after the movie, which is when there's typically a rush. Good and relevant trailers, I often enjoy these, but less other ads. Large screen, great sound.
smarri··on Ask HN: Software Development Final MSc Project Ideas?
Yeah good point. There's a nascent space industry emerging where I am, I think this has a promising future.
smarri··on AI unmasks anonymous chess players, posing privacy risks
Thanks, I spent many hours and late nights into early mornings playing this game.
smarri··on Ask HN: Those with money-making side projects, how did you come up with the idea?
I'm a member, thanks for neocities!
smarri··on What are executive off-sites good for?
I prefer the idea of a solo offsite better. Well, something between an offsite and a holiday. A time to think deeply about your business / market / customers / future, whatever it is.
smarri··on Ask HN: I get married on Saturday, what advice do you have?
Sit vis vobiscum.
smarri··on Ask HN: What are 100K dollar ideas but not million dollar ideas?
A colleague of mine buys and sells art in his spare time and makes $100k per year

smarri··on Scotland ‘snow-free’ for fourth time in six years
Yes that's true, I agree.
smarri··on Ask HN: Reading issues, forgetting previous paragraph, does it happen to you?
It happens if I'm tired or if I'm very relaxed and my mind wanders, I go back and reread the section when I notice, and if it keeps happening, I put the book down and come back to it later.
smarri··on Ask HN: The Future for Strategy Consulting?
I agree that the time & materials ways of consulting is ripe for disruption, or just a bit bland.

I think some of consultings value is outsourcing responsibility e.g. if consultancy x is on the hook to deliver a project, then the business appointing them just has to manage the outcomes. If something goes wrong, the consultancy takes the heat and potential liability.

There's also that potential that it gives senior management the ability to make a change and point to the consultancy as the reason, rather than themselves. And other times it's for senior managers to be made to look good by using highly skilled consultants to get things done.

Outcome based pay is an option, or a even a retainer model, but there's possibly something more innovative out there, I'm just not sure what it is.

smarri··on Ask HN: Bored working for the current company, advice?
I wouldn't overthink it, I'd start interviewing and see what you like the look of once some offers come in.
smarri··on Scotland ‘snow-free’ for fourth time in six years
My view is the climate is changing, and it's either too late or we lack the ability to control the climate. Therefore, we must work with what we have and prepare for new weather and new local climate systems. Of interest: https://www.newyorker.com/culture/cultural-comment/what-if-w...
smarri··on Queen Elizabeth II has died
I was in London during Covid, and the Queen's Speech to the nation during the pandemic was a pivitol and powerful moment.

"We should take comfort that while we may have more still to endure, better days will return: we will be with our friends again; we will be with our families again; we will meet again."

smarri··on Show HN: Bankrank.io – Search hundreds of bank accounts to find the best rates
Hey I think this is great, congratulations! I've been trying to get something similar going for UK banks, would you be interested in taking a look at the MVP? I took a slightly different approach, but also didn't have the technical chops to build the nice filter system you guys have.
smarri··on Ask HN: If you had to start a business, what would it be?
What consulting would you do, technology work or some form of business advisory?
smarri··on Ask HN: If you had to start a business, what would it be?
I agree, and I expect other countries to follow.
smarri··on Ask HN: If you had to start a business, what would it be?
Just curious
smarri··on Ask HN: What's the best self-help resource you've found for overcoming anxiety?
Getting therapy, particularly talking therapy with a qualified therapist. I know this doesn't answer your question exactly, but it'll very likely help you uncover the root of the anxiety and manage it way better. It's one of the best things I can recommend. If you must go down the self help route, I'd consider looking at physical changes as well as the things your looking for, such as exercise, diet, relationships, getting outdoors, and so on. Good luck.
smarri··on Ask HN: Tricks to disconnect from work while on vacation
I'd get a second phone to separate the work and personal life, and leave that behind when you go on vacation. Prepare a thorough handover before you leave so your team or someone else can pick things up, and trust them to do it. I try to remember that work will be just fine without me, I'm not that important (no matter how important you may be).
smarri··on What’s the strangest thing you ever found in a book?
Let's have a part 2, his life story! You teased us with that:)
smarri··on Ask HN: What is a purchase that made you happy?
