Nice!
smarri··on Ask HN: Charging a Client for On-Call Time
I agreed a 24*7 on call support with a client of ours last year. Per person on call, we charged;

$250 per call out instance, plus,

$250 per hour under active call out, plus,

Day rate + $250 for weekends and other public holidays on call.

In comparison I think $1000 is very reasonable, but of course the circumstances may be very different.

smarri··on Ask HN: What books would you recommend to newly appointed ScaleUp CTO?
I thought the exact same
smarri··on Ask HN: What’s Your Morning Routine?
1. The moment I wake up

2. Before I put on my makeup

3. I say a little prayer for you

4. And while combing my hair, now

5. And wondering what dress to wear now

smarri··on Ask HN: Would love a physical job, any ideas?
How about mountaineering, there are qualifications to take and you can take groups hiking and camping as the job. With experience you can also join the mountain rescue. You'll be in nature a lot. Congrats on your project income that is admirable.
smarri··on I Found a Google Search Easter Egg
:) it's a nice touch!
smarri··on Ask HN: Looking for new hobbies to relax, grow or make friends, any ideas?
Typo - second hand clubs
smarri··on Ask HN: Looking for new hobbies to relax, grow or make friends, any ideas?
Golf! Highly challenging, lots of people to meet, lots of nice places to go and play at home or abroad. If you aren't a golfer, I'd recommend going to your nearest driving range, getting some lessons, some send hand clubs, and then playing the courses.
smarri··on Cormac McCarthy has died
My favourite author, Blood Meridian was like nothing I ever had read before. Rest in peace.
smarri··on Ask HN: Ideas/Projects for an Old Car
Brilliant responses thank you! Very creative!
smarri··on Ask HN: What are you working on?(Non-software projects only)
Golf
smarri··on Ask HN: Has anyone switched from a professional job to a more manual one?
I continue in my office job, but get my fix of physical-type work through gardening, cooking, golf, and driving.
smarri··on How are you folks using ChatGPT in your daily life(except work)?
"Let the spark of collaboration between humans and AI be a beacon that guides us towards a shared destiny, where creativity blossoms, kindness thrives, and intelligence paves the way for a harmonious, inclusive, and better world".

Very nice!

smarri··on Show HN: Challenge my GPT-4 Negotiator to learn negotiation skills
I think you would also get some interest from business, if you end up with some specific business examples e.g. contract negotiation over goods or services, or a contract breakdown and negotiating to fix things. I could see less experienced negotiators learning much more from this than some dry slide deck or role play scenario, and even experienced ones using it for fun and extra learning. Perhaps even if you could allow a business to customise a scenario to be tailored to their needs, e.g. you provide the platform and prompts required to get it to work, then the business then provides a layer of prompts for their own context. I'm just free-thinking here really, I know in the back end it can take a lot of work to build things so good luck!!
smarri··on Show HN: Challenge my GPT-4 Negotiator to learn negotiation skills
Yeah it's great! I tried every trick in the book to make it happen :) so I just lost the hostage twice... unfortunately, but managed the third time to rescue them pretty fast in the end which I was pleased with. What's your future plans for the negotiation game?
smarri··on Show HN: Challenge my GPT-4 Negotiator to learn negotiation skills
After hearing $35k for a while, I crept my offer up to $20k, then asked the AI to split the difference since we are friends, which they accepted. I was really trying to get it for no money, but couldn't find a way :)
smarri··on Show HN: Challenge my GPT-4 Negotiator to learn negotiation skills
I thought this was brilliant! I managed to get $30k for the art sale, but would love to know if I could have done better. Negotiation is a big part of my job, so thoroughly enjoyed this. Now to try the other negotiation... I thought the summary at the end was very good too.
smarri··on Ask HN: Science Fiction books that predict where ChatGPT might lead us?
I reckon so too
smarri··on Ask HN: Successful one-person online businesses?
I read your book not long ago, thoroughly enjoyed it. One of the best business books I've read in a long time.
smarri··on Ask HN: How can I discover mid-stage statups?
Crunchbase will show startups who have closed funding rounds, based on the round or amount it can be an indicator that the startup is intact a scale up. Might be useful for you
smarri··on Show HN: Recursive LLM Prompts
I bet this is what crashed chat gpt today :)
smarri··on Amazon to lay off 9,000 more workers after earlier cuts
Ah yes of course, good point indeed.
smarri··on Ask HN: What projects did you build to get better as a programmer?
Very cool, these are nice moments to be able to remember. Thanks for sharing
smarri··on Amazon to lay off 9,000 more workers after earlier cuts
My optimistic view says that we will see heaps of innovation and new companies emerge from all of the smart tech workers across the industry who are choosing to leave or are being made redundant.
smarri··on Ask HN: What projects did you build to get better as a programmer?
This is a nice response, what were those bits of code that made you smile?
smarri··on Ask HN: How do you delay a job offer?
I agree with some other comments, just explain the bonus situation to your new employer. They can make you whole by bringing you in sooner and paying it to you themselves, or let you join after the bonus is paid. I've been on both sides of this, I waited hiring someone for a sales role as she wanted to collect a quarterly bonus at the place she was leaving, I though it was the sign of a good sales person! I also was offered a role when the hiring company agreed to match my anticipated bonus to bring me on sooner. Good luck!

Edit : typo

smarri··on Ask HN: Do you have a smart system/method to track things in your life?
I stay on top of birthdays using an airtable automation. I've listed all the birthdays and get an email one week before it's due, so I can arrange a card and gift. I use something similar to remind me about weekly chores, e.g. taking out the trash.
smarri··on Ask HN: What do you talk about in 1-on-1s with your managers?
I send an email in advance with the 3 or 4 priority things I want to talk about, and if there's nothing to discuss I just say that and we cancel. Usually it's key work updates, if there's any help or information I need. I've never had a direct report of mine take the lead like that, bit I wish they would!
smarri··on Identity thieves bypassed Experian security to view credit reports
"you simply change the last part of the URL from “/acr/oow/” to “/acr/report,” and the site would display the consumer’s full credit report."

Unreal.
